View Full Version : Round 2 - DVXUser Photography Contest

Jeremy Ordan
08-13-2006, 02:48 PM
Hello photography people...

After more than 5000 views and 600 comments the DVXUser Photography Contest will move into the second round!

Why?
Why is a filmmaking community doing something with photography? Simple... With photography you learn about lighting, composition, framing, blocking, and it is fun. Ask any of the 30 people who submitted for the first round to raise money for charity as well as participate in a community event and they will tell you, it was fun, plus:

It is very simple

*Take a picture that fits within the topic of the week on any camera with any lens that you want.
*Post process the image in any way that you choose and see fit.
*Please do not post any images that are larger than 8" x 10" at 72DPI
*Email the image to DVXUser@stffilms.com along with any comments regarding the image
*Vote and comment on the images submitted
*The winner will choose the topic for next weeks photography contest.

Simple, right? Maybe too simple... So what's the catch? There is no catch! No cost. No one profitting. No one stealing your images and claiming them as their own. Nothing...

PRIZE:
*The winner chooses next weeks topic (example: landscape, macro, or anything)

This week's topic: Summertime (Chosen by CR_OPSO, last weeks winner)
Due Date: August 23rd @ 11:59 EST
Voting Period: August 24th - August 27th @ 11:59 EST
Next Topic Posting on: August 23rd

FINE PRINT: I will post the top 10 finishers on Midnight on August 23rd, please PM me within 24 hours with the topic for the next week.

Good luck everyone and I can't wait to see what you submit!

-Jeremy

Just to update everyone, in the next 24 hours the photo database is being relocated to a new dedicated T1 server with unlimited bandwith. This will open up a lot of opportunities and hopefully in the next few weeks it will also allow for user portfolios. I'm trying to work out the last little details, but as of right now, things are looking so bright we'll all have to wear shades.

Jeremy Ordan

My only goal is that we continue to grow it and people learn from it. Personally I can say that I've booked a couple of studio portrait things, even using my D50 and only having continuos lights, but they are coming along great. Those are things that wouldn't have happened without these contests and talking photography and post production techniques with the members here. I think it's bad ass.

No that's part of the beauty of it. You have to take a new photo based on the contest theme.

Jeremy Ordan
08-20-2006, 02:15 PM
Cryogenic is correct, all images should be taken during the period from when the contest is announced until when the submission is due. We're working with the honor code here, so we are not requiring you to submit a RAW file or anything like that, but it's all for fun, so play nicely.

One submission per person is correct and it should be taken during the contest period. I think everyone has to sort between several shots and choosing the one that you feel best applies to the challenge as well as demonstrates what you are attempting to convey is one of the key elements of doing this.

Dude, I don't want to hear it... This weekend was Yankees vs. Red Sox so obviously I didn't shoot then. Then I have been interviewing for a promotion at work (which I was denied), so with the deadline looming I had my model show up this morning at 7AM and we went and shot for an hour. There was so much humidity that the only lens I could use without it fogging was my 50mm 1.8, so needless to say, it was a rough morning and I'm covered in bug bites. 200+ photos, 6 decents ones, and somewhere in that mess of 6 decent ones there is that one special shot... I just need to find it. If that's not dedication/addiction, I don't know what is :)

I went to the Sunday game. I saw A-Rod ground into a double play. Jesus.

Jeremy Ordan
08-23-2006, 12:31 PM
My completely off topic post of the day:

Football you complete 3 out of 10 tackles or passes or blocks and you get fired.
Basketball you complete 3 out of 10 blocks, passes, shots, or plays and you get fired.
Tennis you complete 3 out of 10 shots you are off the tour

Baseball... you hit 3 out of 10 and you go to the hall of fame. I appreciate Arod even more now that he is struggling. I'm not on the whole I hate Arod bandwagon...

Back on topic: I think that tonight we'll have a rash of submissions because this morning I didn't think that we would even hit as many submissions as last time.

-Jeremy

-zach-
08-23-2006, 01:20 PM
I don't hate A-rod, but it's frustrating when he makes a bad play.

I can't decide between two pictures I want to submit. One is really professional looking but kind of generic. The other one is interesting and kind of funny, but it's not very professional looking. This is hard!

Believe it or not... I pick the dern topic and can't even take a photo for it. I just got back from Jasper, AR... and it rained the whole time I was there (not that Jasper screams "summertime" when the weather's nice anyway). I thought I'd have more time when I got back home, but no luck. I'll look through my pics from the trip and see if anything can be twisted to be somewhat on topic.

Why I oughta... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
Oh well... I just looked over everything and it'd be a push to twist something to fit the topic. (Mountains, deer, cabins, a flower or two, and my daughter, and LOTS of RAIN) If we had 49 entries and only needed one more to make Jeremy donate $50, I'd submit something! :)

And I had what I thought was a REALLY good idea for this one... the timing was just off. I planned to shoot it Saturday, but since we were heading out of town bright and early Sunday, I ended up spending most of Saturday getting ready for the trip.

Chad

On edit... what the heck... I sent something anyway. I just couldn't pick the topic and not participate. I really can't wait to see what everyone came up with... not much longer now!

A couple of things... Remember, keep we're like AA for the first 24 hours, completely anonymous.

From that point, so technically Friday, say who did what...

Please make comments across the board though, both positive as well as constructive. The point of these contests is not to show off talent, images, or photoshop skills, but rather to improve composition, lighting, and overall photography skills. Constructive criticism is the reason we are doing this.

Congrats to everyone who entered, you're all winners just for entering, in my opinion, but my opinion does matter and we will crown a winner :)

My idea was to go back to the part of town I was in for my entry in Round 1 and look for a family without air conditioning (there are many and it's been around 100 degrees every day). I was hoping to find an obviously run down house with several people sitting on the porch... escaping the heat that's built up inside the house. Then post process it to B&W. That was the idea I had for "summertime", but my vacation plans got in the way.

It was nice and cool in the mountains, but it rained the whole time. On top of that, my truck broke down and we couldn't leave the cabin... :(

I started to submit this and title it "My escape from the Louisiana heat":

Real quick, just to be sure everyone understands:

You do not need to have entered a photography into the contest in order to vote or comment on the images. In fact, the most important part of these challenges is the commenting because your constructive feedback is what allows the artist to improve their compositional, lighting, and blocking skills for future projects.

I understand that it is a pain in the ass to comment on 30 images, but it honestly takes just a few minutes and you are giving someone who invested time into creating something feedback on how the image makes you feel and what they might do to improve in the future.

I ask that when you submit feedback, and please submit feedback, but when you do, please make it constructive. Something along the lines of 'this sucks' really doesn't help anyone.

Once again, please submit comments because that is what allows people to improve in on future projects. Thanks!

I was going for the dreamy "Purina dog commercial" look on this one. I got REALLY lucky with the lighting... I went out at about an hour before the deadline, grabbed some treats for my dog, and got her into a good spot, and snapped a few shots. I don't have a very good digital camera (I use my junky Nikon CoolShot camera) but I did a little post work on the image to get the look I wanted. Thanks all for the comments! I think you should have left the grass sharp. It is a nice effect blurred but there is too much quality detail in the grass to get rid of it. Thats just me.

My picture was "shred". Yes it was a self portrait. As in ride down a hill lean over and snap the picture. And again I am fairly anti-photoshop for juicing up photos, so i left it untouched. I enjoy the all natural black and white aspect of photography. Hope you like it.

Well since everyone is posting there thing here rather than in the individual pictures, which is cool, here is mine and the borderline novel about the image.

http://www.stffilms.com/Photos/albums/userpics/10002/Splash.jpg

OK, well this image was mine... I think between my comment on the image as well as the description I highlighted what I liked and disliked regarding this image. Here is the quick story behind the image: I had originally planned for another nude shot but ran into a couple of problems with bugs and my model protesting, so that shattered the shoot on Sunday (it was going to be a birds eye of a woman laying naked in a patch of flowers, right hand covering breasts and left hand covering crotch)... Ultimately that just wasn't going to work for this though. I then decided I would actually submit a picture with a clothed model. I came up with this idea at lunch with a friend of mine discussing Tom Hanks and how far he has come... from Splash to Cast Away. I stood up and yelled, Splash! That's f*cking summer like nothing else. On a napkin I storyboarded out the shot with this idea of having a woman come out of the pool with this arch of water surrounding her. This proved a lot easier to draw than shoot. First I was down to 3 days and all the normal people I shoot were already booked tight. Heather, the model who I used for this shoot, and I played phone tag all the way up until Tuesday around 11pm before we were able to connect. At that point she agreed to show up at my house at 7am the next morning. I set up and got everything together for the shot, bringing an 18-70mm lens, 70-210mm lens, and then a 50mm 1.8. I had packed a polarizer, uv, IR, yellow filter, blue filter... everything just for this shot. Well come to Wednesday morning there is a massive fog and 98% humidity that had descended upon the city. We got to the pool and everything instantly fogged up and was covered with so much condensation I wondered if I could get a single shot off. We did a lot of pool shots of her playing with a beach ball and jumping into the pool because I learned long ago that what you plan to do may not be as good as that shot that you just snap while playing around (and in this case trying to wait out the humidity). Ultimately we said 'screw it' and just locked the camera down on the tripod and got ready to shoot. I made a decision to really go for a shallow depth of field to isolate the water and her profile, but believe this shot would have been more ideal at F4.0 rather than the 1.8 that I shot at. A slightly deeper depth of field would have allowed for more water to be in the shooting plane rather than the thin amount presented here. Ultimately I shot this with a light blue filter, a polarizer, and a 50mm 1.8 lens on the Nikon D50... this was the only combination I could come up with that wouldn't fog up, because originally I wanted something much wider like the wide end of the 17-70mm. Now to the actual shoot, this is where things got complicated in that the D50, even at 1.8 and a shutter over 1000 only generates 2-3 FPS shooting. My idea was for Heather to bend at the waist, submerge completely and jerk her body backwards creating this arch of water surrounding her. Well, with only about 2 frames per second I have a lot of shots of her under water or the splash falling on top of her. In total we took around 200 pictures to get 5 that were close to the image that I had in mind. It was a long shoot but ultimately the result I think speaks for itself in capturing that one moment that exists in a blink of an eye. I thank everyone for their comments, especially the constructive criticism about the DOF, the action, as well as the overall feel of the image.

I'll claim "Summer Boots"

http://dvxuser.mikkowilson.com/SummerBoots

I hate to say it, but that was set up.
That is once more my girlfriend - whom I also have to give credit for the idea. We shot off a small bunch of shots and I chose my favorate to run though 'shop.
It was originally going to be a color photo, but after the usual color sweetening I decided that it looked like junk. So I decided to try out some stylization with the sepia, an oposite of the blueness of the rain. Amazing how much more the brightness curves pop without color!

Here's the color version:

That's the family pup. Shot on my classic 1950's Nikon SP (one of Nikon's first nice rangefinders), with I believe Sensi 100, although it could have been elitchrome II 200, . This is mine:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/16094/1156551448.jpg
It's a little grainy because I had set my ISO higher when I was trying to sneak a picture of a humming bird (it was pretty dim and I was trying to increase the shutter speed by upping the ISO). When I gave up on that, I started shooting the flowers, but forgot to lower the ISO. I took this in RAW and made a few minor adjustments in the conversion. In photoshop, I just adjusted levels, resized, and sharpened.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I had several good ideas (people in rocking chairs on their porch, lemonade stand, etc) but just didn't have the time to do it. I got home from vacation at 7pm on the last day of the contest. I looked through my vacation pictures and just picked the one that was closest to the topic (I know it's still not really on topic... not at all what I had in mind when I picked the topic).

We went to the mountains hoping for cooler weather and it was rainy and foggy almost the whole time. Here's a picture of the view from the back porch of the cabin (it was a lot nicer when it wasn't so foggy):
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/16094/1156552133.jpg

My ancient digital point and shoot is a real POS, with about a 1/2 second shutter delay. Makes it really interesting trying to get action shots. Also the total lack of control of other aspects of the shot is really frustrating. But you work with what you got.

What I liked best is my daughter's total Zen like joy of the moment. As Jeremy pointed out, the shot would have been much better with a lower angle. Next time.

I probably should have submitted this one:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7683/1156558126.jpg

It plays to the camera's strengths (no motion), but I didn't like it for a couple of reasons. One, that anyone with ice cream in summer should be smiling, and two, I didn't like the busy background.

Another one I kind of liked was this one:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7683/1156558177.jpg

It has a dreamy, ethereal feel to me. But I didn't use it because technically it just had too many problems.

Thanks, again, Jeremy for coming up with this and organizing it. It's a great little doable contest that I don't have to assemble a crew for.

And thanks for everyone that submitted comments! I appreciate you taking the time.

http://www.kovarova.com/dump/DSC080751.jpg

I expected that no one would actually like it and im glad some did. I went down to the bay with a point and shoot sony digital and took a bunch of shots. This is the one that spoke to me most and resembles my state of mind this summer.

I like that it is not perfect, rough and you have to work at it. It has more meaning to me than the sun on the water or something else you would expect with the summertime theme. It is untreated and not cropped.

I could have spent more time on the composition but I like to find beauty and meaning in imperfection… so I only took one shot and left it as it is. Hopefully there is just enough there to allow interpretation and a sense of some emotion.

Kova, at this size I can see the detail. I couldn't tell what I was looking through in the other photo. Here I can see the inside of the boat and it takes on a different perspective because of it. Being able to see the inside of the boat takes away that "looking through a keyhole" feeling.

ya i had to size it down to the specs.. and there is so much black that you loose the detail on the web.

I was floating IN the pool, 9' deep, on a unstable floating air raft. Two people were holding the strap to my D1 with specific instructions that if I fell off the raft, to let me drown if need be, but to keep my camera out of the water at all costs.

I got one take... he ran, jumped, and I mashed the button. 5 or 6 frames total, but this one was perfect. The cropping at the top and left was how it was captured, I only shortened the right side of the frame give it a perfect 3 point balance like this: ^

I thought about the sky, but I tend to do only macro changes in PS if posible. I know I could put a perfect cloudy blue sky behind him... but everyone else knows that too. I dunno, I just left it how it was. It was grey hazy day afterall, as summer tends to be up this way.

My ancient digital point and shoot is a real POS, with about a 1/2 second shutter delay. Makes it really interesting trying to get action shots. Also the total lack of control of other aspects of the shot is really frustrating. But you work with what you got.

I completely understand. Even though it's mostly about the photographer instead of the camera, it's still a big jump from a PnS PoS to a D-SLR. If nothing else, the lack of shutter lag is a major improvement. I still think you did great considering what you have... and your "model" is beautiful, too. And I think your photo fit the theme perfectly.

I used to say that too... then I tried to use an old Nikon, um forget what, P&S digital... OMG the lag killed me.

I gave the damn camera away.

It wasn't until I could afford a USED D1 (2001) that I finally started with digital.

I still use that D1. In some ways I like it better than the D2x (in camera B&W, and the whacky screwy D1 color rendition that everyone else hated).

Thanks, guys, for your comments.

My 'model' knows she's cute, and has no self esteem issues. Yesterday she was coloring something and thought she had done a good job with it. She stops, holds it up, and yells out exuberantly "Hooray for me!". I'm not looking forward to puberyty.

I hope no one was offended by my impromptu captions of their pictures that came in without titles or comments.

It was late, and I was in a funky mood.

I, too, am a Photoshop minimalist. It's probably because I'm also a PS idiot, but I rationalize my not using it because I want to capture what's actually there.

That being said, I really like what many have shown they did with PS with their pics. In many ways, it's similar to just being able to go back and put a different filter on the cam to improve the shot.

I'll claim this one. I had a few other ideas, such as Road Work since they always want to work on the roads here in the summer. Also thought about the frying of the egg on the sidewalk gig. Went with the ballpark idea because it is America's summer activity. Unfortunately the Rangers were on a road trip so there were not many people milling about. As for the wider shot, I thought it would get too much junk. Part of living in 2006 is there are light pole and signs everywhere that tend to clutter the look of everything. I had some other shots, but then happend on this framing and liked it. I did some fixing and curve work in photoshop. I took used pattern and clone to take out the white rag string around the base of the one tree to the left. I used curves tool to change the look abit, but did not want to mess with it too much as I am color blind and that can lead to some really weird looks. I just thought it was a bit too bright for me.

The 2nd from the bottom is awesome, but why not a super wide image from in the game?

Thanks Jeremy. Rangers were out of town for the contest. I could have gone into the restaurant there and take a picture from their window. Did not totally like the framing and there is clutter I don't like such as the signs. Had actually started to get rid of the signs, was going to use it until I got that last shot. I "work" about a block way across the street so pass by on my way every day which is why I had the availability to take the shots even with the Rangers out of town.

There are monks in Hinsdale?

Do they drive Lexus's?
NO! They don't even drive a used 300 series BMW! :)

Thank you everyone for the feedback! Good job everyone, the pictures looked GREAT!

Mike McNeese & Brandon Rice!

I loved your DOG pictures! They were 2 of my favorites, & I'm not even a HUGE dog person! or maybe I am! :) Kudos to the both of you capturing the beauty of the pup!

Brandon, did your dog make it into "Smugglers Ransom"? If not, that's wasted talent!

Does your dog have an agent? :)

oh yeah, thanks a lot Jeremy for the photo contest! Also nice picture!

Also thought about the frying of the egg on the sidewalk gig.

That would have been great! (not that your entry wasn't, but the egg frying on the sidewalk would have gotten really high marks!)

Sadly, my dog did not make it into Smuggler's Ransom. I tried. I really did. I was trying to get her to lie down and be in the flashback scene, but she was too nervous with the crew around and stuff... Next time though :) Glad you liked the picture!

Hey folks, cool new entries from all you.

I didn't get the chance to enter because I went camping.

Hope to have something for round three, dunno what the challenge is though. Maybe I skipped it in this thread or it hasn't been announced. Fill me in if I've been living under a rock!

Mine was the Ice Cream truck. It is kinda funny, I was out scouting a location for a photo shoot and was on my way back to my car and I heard the music. I turned around and snapped a shot. It was not what I wanted to submit, but I was running out of time and it was the summer pic I had.

Congrats everyone! I think all of the pictures were TOP NOTCH, the voting here is tough! Thanx for the votes, I made #9! :)

Actually the monk on the RIGHT in my photo

is the subject of my current documentary project, so I'll probably not be able to enter Round #3 of the photo contest! :(

Good luck everyone!
