A crane huh? Cool! We just recently got ourselves a dolly. Made it ourselves! It's great how a thing like that can suddenly boost your shooting....make it more 'real' in terms of filming.

Small update:

- We've just about sold our two DVX100a's and will have to replace it with an HVX.
This might be rather tricky considering we still have almost all yet to film, and switching cams out like this isn't particularly, <ahem> clever :)

- Locations are sorted.

- Some props are still causing problems though, and they'll have to be made by us, as we couldn't find anything for rent/sale that suits.

Fun project though!

Jack Daniel Stanley

Soooooo?
What's shakin -- got your HVX yet? Anxious to know how that's working out andwhen are shooting.

Good luck.

Marius

Thanks Jack,

no cam right now....HVX in the "works" but not sure if it will get here in time.
We might end up shooting with a chintzy Sony "handycam".

Marius

HVX on UPS truck for delivery today! :)

Q:
Anyone know when the earliest is one can upload the finished movie? I will be travelling at the end of September and was wondering if it will be possible to upload BEFORE I leave?

Jack Daniel Stanley
09-06-2006, 05:29 AM
technically no because the link and all that won't be up until then (usually)

PM Jarred and ask if he can make a folder for you to upload before the link is officially up.

If that won't work you can upload it to my server and then I will transfer it to DVXuser server when the upload link is officially up.

Marius

Thanks Jack, I will probably take you up on that offer!

Marius
09-17-2006, 08:12 AM
Anyone know final delivery format yet?
We need to finish this up by tomorrow, as I'll be travelling from then onwards....(and we'd like to send it to you, Jack, if that offer's still valid). We need to know what format though. 16:9 MOV in H.264 is what we'd normally use. Is there a file size/frame size limitation?

Ok it might not be horror but I pissed myself.

After watching about 2 hours of short horror films I have to say it was a breath of fresh air. 2 of us watched it and we both were laughing out loud as it was just absurd :-)

So no, not the scariest thing here, but oddly enough just the thing we needed in a competition like this. good fun.

Marius

Okay, VERY cool that it had the desired effect! Many thanks for the feedback and comments. They are much appreciated.

Time to set a few things straight. First off, I am actually VIDLED. It's a long story; but basically I couldn't log into that account at the time of starting this thread. Jarred sorted it all out a few weeks later.
Since the original post is basically just a RED HERRING (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_herring) anyway (fake picture), I just kept it going like this.

So, back to KILLER SOUND: we didn't have much time doing this. We were sans cams for a few weeks (we had just sold our two DVXs). Once we got the HVX, I had to go for a shoot to LA with it. We managed to squeeze in a couple of shots for KILLER SOUND before I left, but were basically going to pull the plug, as it didn't look like we were going to finish this. Then, on October 1st, 4 p.m. we decided to go ahead anyway. So, with the deadline about 8 hours away we decided to go for it. We shot more than 80% that afternoon/evening. Final outside fog scene was shot at 11:15PM EST. Then edited and cranked the compressed files out; uploaded at about 3 a.m. October 2nd.

All shot on HVX but in NTSC to MiniDV.

The opening scene is done with a wireless pan/tilt head on a car mount kit. Driver is also operating the pan/tilt head.
And since as I was traveling so much, and away from family for too long, this ended up being a family project. So, my wife and kids are crew and actors. Hey, it was a neat way to spend some fun time together. Some outtakes are here: WMV file, 3MB
(http://pig.us/bts.wmv) (only watch AFTER 'Killer Sound', as it'll spoil the punchline I guess)

Prize givaway: We'll give away a VIDLED light with battery pack and charger (will be a used, or demo unit, but perfectly working) to the first who PMs me the CORRECT THREE (3) HINTS to the ending in KILLER SOUND. I.e. there are THREE very distinct [visual] HINTS in KILLER SOUND that leads up to the ENDING. Simply correctly identify the three things, and PM them to me, and whoever gets it right first, wins the VIDLED light. (This will end when the first correct answer is received, or Friday, Oct. 13th, 11:59:59PM, whichever comes first). One entry per person only - at least at this time, we might allow multiple entries if no one gets the correct answer by Wednesday.

Good luck, and thanks for watching.

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

L M F A O. Dude, You and Draco take the cake for funniest entries. It was so hilarious. I mean it started off with some CRAZY nice visuals. Great hood shot that made me go "dang that was hot.". Some nice budget lighting at night. Clean looking fog. Then it breaks into a terror scene. Here is exactly how it played out for me.

Kholi: Man not another one with no story. GEEZ.

Mother: What is it!?!?!?

Kholi: Wtf just run chic!

Microphone: - Creeps into frame. -

Daughter: Seinheiser M-66!

Kholi: - Dies laughing in his fluffy green chair. -

Man that was so great. I have to show that to my boss at work. I love it. Thanks for the comic relief, man.

On a side note: I want to check out some serious work from you. Those shots were clean and rather cinematic. And tell the girl she did a good job on line delivery. She didn't even say "It's a seinheiser m-66!"... she just said "Seinheiser M-66!"

That killed me!

Prize givaway: getting some answers PMed already. None are 100% correct though. Looks like the 2nd clue (out of the 3) might be a bit more difficult to get than I thought. It IS obvious, but maybe only to an audio-person?

The prize givaway rules: We'll give away a VIDLED light with battery pack and charger (will be a used, or demo unit, but perfectly working) to the first who PMs me the CORRECT THREE (3) HINTS to the ending in KILLER SOUND. I.e. there are THREE very distinct [visual] HINTS in KILLER SOUND that leads up to the ENDING. Marius, great twist. You got me!!!

First of all, I thought that the opening sequence was beautiful. I love the reflection in the hood of the car. I thought that it was water at first but didn't make any sense with the moving trees. Confused and a good way. Then when you pan off the front of the car and onto the road, it became clear. Very nice camera work.

I was really enjoying this film until the car pulled over and the girl ran into the woods! I was like, WHAT??? I know that is a cliche, but this is the most blatant use of cliche that I have ever seen!!! Then of course, the surprise!

Great diversion! Thanks for the laugh! Wonderful!!!

I'm back and working on a post that reveals all...

Marius
10-11-2006, 08:26 PM
Okay here goes....

First of all, thanks to all who watched KILLER SOUND, and to all who entered/
participated in the little competition we had going.

Since we didn't want the ending of KILLER SOUND to be completely in a vacuum,
we thought it fun to include a few hints throughout the movie. Of course they
had to be somewhat hidden, and hopefully not easily identified the first time the
short is watched - we didn't want to give away the ending after all!

So, once the short was up for while we'd asked for anyone to watch KILLER
SOUND and answer the following: "There are THREE very distinct [visual] HINTS
in KILLER SOUND that leads up to the ENDING. Simply correctly identify the three
things, and PM them to me, and whoever gets it right first, wins the VIDLED
light..."

On round 1, we received a good number of entries, but not one was all correct.
In fact, within minutes Blaine answered two correctly. As it turned out, the middle
clue/hint was the MOST difficult one to spot though. Funny really, as it's probably
the one that's most prominently visible.

Anyway, most were guessing things we hadn't even considered; the wireless mic
that was visible on Jess as she runs away was a favorite WRONG one. Also some
were seeing things that I still can't see. Mics in cars, or above signs, etc. Many
were looking at this thing frame-by-frame. It was much fun...well, at least for us
here! :)

So we decided to let everyone have another go, after Wednesday noon (EST),
also mentioning that the wireless mic was NOT a clue/hint (just bad filmmaking!)

HERE ARE THE CORRECT HINTS/CLUES IN KILLER SOUND:

1) MIC IN SHOT

The microphone is dangling in the shot during the goodbye scene. This was
actually [poorly] overlayed afterwards, as I had forgotten to dangle it in the
frame when we shot that.

http://pig.us/ks-a.jpg

3) MAINE STATE ROUTE 66 (ME66) ROAD SIGN

Probably the easiest one to catch - I think everyone caught this one. Sign was
made with a printer and some poster software, then taped onto some cardboard.
Too afraid to get a fine from a Park Ranger (we shot on State Land), we chose a
side road for this.

http://pig.us/ks-c.jpg

and now for the one that [almost] everyone had a hard time with...

2) TISSUE BOX IS SENNHEISER MIC BOX

http://pig.us/ks-b.jpg

This was quite tough, I admit, although I always thought the sheer size of this
thing would give it away. Apparently not.

So, who got these all right?

Well, we received TWO correct answers, one hour apart!!!

At 3:12 PM I received a PM from Sacksnack with ALL correct answers! Way to go!!

However, at 2:10 PM I had already received a PM from SilverWolf with all correct
answers.

Because they were so close together, and we had so much fun with this, we've
decided to make both of you winners, and we'll consider you BOTH first prize
winners (a used/demo VIDLED light with batterypack).

But again, just for the record, SilverWolf correctly answered this FIRST, and will
therefore have first choice of the demo/used lights we have available.

CONGRATS to SilverWolf and Sacksnack!!!! Please email me for more info on how
to get your VIDLED light.

Hope you all had some fun with this, and again, many thanks to all who watched,
and all who participated,

Marius/vidled

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

Funny gag, and I’m glad it was just a gag because I was thinking to myself this story is going no where, there’s no audible dialogue to the point where I thought they were mimes, etc. Oh, I get it now too … we couldn’t hear their voices until the boom mic was visible! Clever. That said, you had a KILLER opening shot from the hood of that car. It looked great & peaceful, and I’m thinking to myself … “wow, they’ve got a lot of barrel distortion there … wonder what kind of lens they shot this with” … only to pan up & see that we were watching the reflection of the car hood. Nice shot!

Wow, amazing to see Killer Sound did so well (relatively), considering it was more of a spoof/gag/inside joke than anything else; certainly not a horror flick! :)
Looks like that opening shot really did "legitimize" this thing! Awesome stuff.

Many, many thanks to all who watched, reviewed and voted.
