OK, we know YouTube sucks, but this video from Siggraph 06 rocks. Check out the wine glass part in the middle. Free software can be wonderful.

This fluid test is also very impressive:

It just goes to show that the artist is the key, not the app (with minor exceptions).

Hehe... it was like watching a demo from like 1995!

Free is cool though and its great to have other options, especially open
source :)

That fluid test is not that great, sorry take a look at this also done in Blender:

It took 48 hours to calculate and about 10,000,000 traiangles !!!!!

That comment isn't true for everything on the reel, but before I let it get under my skin I had to admit that when I first watched this reel a few weeks ago there were several selections in the reel that I hated (because they looked like they were from 1995) and I was upset about the order of the sequences, the overall length of the reel, the time spent on some cheesy clips and not spent on better clips, and I was sad that they weren't able to get permission to include some of the other great Blender work that came out this last year.

In other words, I don't like the demo reel for this year either. But Blender is great and moving forward quickly. You could say it's a few years behind on some things (although not 1995), but it's pretty cutting edge in other areas.

Besides, even though this year's Siggraph reel may not have been that great, Blender's presence at Siggraph, with the recent Elephant's Dream and an awesome group of people running the booth, was excellent.

Oof. Ten minutes long. That's one epic reel. Not bad for free, but nothing on the reel had any photorealism. It was very cartoony.

Yeah, they decided to only show animations this year, which kind of elimated some of the nicer still renders. Another problem, in my opinion, with this years demo real.

Hey Everdene, got any links to more photorealistic Blender work?

There's always the gallery on the official site. The most recent update has some good ones with Yafray, one of Blender's render engines, down near the bottom (and a couple of near-photorealistic images, like the guitar and amps, using Blender's internal renderer):

There's a Blender artist who usually works towards photorealism and posts over on cgsociety.org. It's great stuff. Like I said, too bad they didn't include any of this in this year's Siggraph demo reel:

That last link there showed me the first actually photorealistic Blender work I've ever seen. I think Blender is great because it's open source and stuff, but I don't like the interface at all, and I don't think it's as powerful as 3DSMax and the other big boys. Couldn't they just make a 3DSMax interface for Blender?

Well, when I said nice, I meant that it was nicer than I thought Blender was capable of performing. I'll have to check out Elephant's Dream.
