I have a HD gig this weekend using two (2) HVX one using (4) 4gig P2 cards and the other I'm looking to capture the raw HD footage via (17in PB, capture now FCP 5 to a 1.2TB Lacie FW 800 connection). :dankk2:
1. Any suggestions regarding capture settings?
2. Any suggestions regarding FW cable length?
3. Finally, any suggestions regarding camera settings?

too little info in order to help.
1. there are only three choices (as I know) to capture DVCPro HD clips in the set is trough any edition program with MXF capture support (I dont know yet wich one do that) or with DVCRack: ( http://www.seriousmagic.com/ ) still in Beta stage or with Firestore HD from Focus Enhancements: ( http://www.focusinfo.com/ ).
2. As the rule says: the max lenght for HD signal trough firewire is 15 feet, however I made a 20 Feet cable and works perfect, I could not made work a longer one.
3. It depends of what you need or want as final release:
SD video?, HD? 24p?, 30p?, 60i?, transfer to film? DVD? etc.... settings are as many as you want.
:)
Good luck!!!

The final release of this project will be television. But, I'd like more information regarding the set-up meaning; how should I set this up in FCP and what settings should I use on the camera (HVX). I plan to shot @ 720p 30p and thanks to you guys, I now understand the suggested FW cable length and why but, again I'm in need of set-up help. :dankk2:
Thank you for your time

I'll leave the camera (prodcution) help up to those that do that kind of stuff. As for post, some tips I can offer you are:
Get Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 if you don't already. Don't give excuses as to why you can't get it or use it, just get it. Apple themselves even admits an issue with P2 Imported media and 5.0.4 (in addition to all the people freaking out in forums). Though some around here have had no issue with 5.0.4, there seems to be enough that have.
Figure out your backup workflow now, not later. Whether it be DVD-Rs, hard drives, DLT, or heck even tape, you need a backup workflow in place before you record your first real frame. Just skim through this forum or others and you'll find many a broken soul because they lost important footage and didn't backup their LastClip.txt and Contents folder properly. As to which is best, well there are plenty of arguements for the various choices. Frankly it comes down to which can you afford and/or have access to.
Load the media into Final Cut Pro off your desktop. You can store the P2 card folders where you like in the end, but when loading it into FCP, load it off the desktop. Again, plenty will say they've had loads of success without resulting to doing so, but with several people recently complaining of problems when they didn't load off the desktop, I think you'd just help yourself by doing so. But again, deal with the backup workflow properly and if something goes wrong in the importing, you'll still be okay.
As for the Final Cut Pro settings. Make your life easier, go to your Easy Setups and select DVCPro HD 720p30. Voila!
cheers.
