Sorry if this has been covered here before. I've got a gig tomorrow using the HVX, just interviews recording 720 60 in a studio. The client has a 120GB lacie drive. Is it possible to record directly to the hard drive via firewire or USB2? They also have a mac laptop. Is there a special program needed to record through the mac to the Lacie or can I just firewire in and it will recognize it? If the mac (I haven't seen it) has a PCMIA slot can I easily dump to the laptop with the P2 cards or do I need a reader of some sort? The material will eventually end up in an Avid. Sorry for these very basic bonehead questions but on short notice your help will b very appreciated.

1. The HVX can not record directly to a USB or Firewire hard drive. It can dump the contents of a P2 card to a Firewire hard drive, but you have to stop recording for that.

2. You can record non-native framerates directly to the hard drive using FCP. Ideally the HVX and the external drive should be on separate buses (either Firewire + USB or Built-in Firewire + Addon card Firewire).

3. If your laptop has a PCMCIA/PCCard slot, then you can install the P2 drivers (https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/pcdriver_li_e.htm) and then mount the cards as removeable volumes. Some people have indicated that write-protecting the P2 cards before putting them in the Mac avoids occasional recognition problems. You can transfer the card contents by copying them manually after mounting the card, or you can automate and simplify the process by using P2 Genie (http://www.p2genie.com/).

Can it dump directly to a USB hard drive also?

If so will it also power a 2.5" laptop HD via the USB? or will it need a power source

No it cannot dump directly to any hard drive, USB or otherwise.

Nor can it power any external hard drive.

Try Firestore, CitiDISC or Cineporter.

No it cannot dump directly to any hard drive, USB or otherwise. The HVX cannot record directly to an external hard drive, but it can dump (offload) the P2 card contents to a SBP2-compliant Firewire drive. Instructions on how to do that are on page 84 of the manual.
