Why, when I set my firestore to DVCPro50 and my HVX to DVCPro50 480i 24p do both FCP and my P2 logger tell me that the video has been recorded at a 29.97 frame rate?
I understand that p it is sometimes stored as interlace but at what point does it morph back into progressive scan?
Also, at the risk of sounding like an ignoramous, will somebody please explain the meaning of "i" and "p" here? We're I'm from that has always meant interlace and progressive. How can it be both? Is this simply confusing terminology like "squeeze"? I have a major shoot using this new technology next week and I've yet to decipher all of this.

I really miss u-matic.

It is progressive-scan footage that's stored in an interlaced "wrapper". It uses 2:3 pulldown to imbed a pure 24p data stream into a 60i interlaced codec.

It says "i" and "p" because the storage stream is interlaced, but the footage itself is progressive.

It gets reverted to progressive scan in your NLE.

And "squeeze" is just unnecessarily confusing -- what it means is, native 16:9 widescreen. "norm" is 4:3, "squeeze" is 16:9, but there's no digital stretching or anything going on -- if you want 16:9, you want "squeeze".
