Hello
I have been shoting footage in 1080/50i and was wondering if there was any down side in resolution by de-interlacing the footage in FCP. I'm thinking 1080i has more information than 720p, so de-interlacing 1080i may be better that 720p????????
would be stoked for any help would

you will loose resolution by deinterlacing.
But why not shoot 1080/25p to begin with?

Yeah. FCP can edit 1080 25p. Just set the field dominance to none in prefrences.

Yeah Ok,
I shot 1080i becuase the shoot was all hand held and there was alot of running. I didn't want to get strobing that progressive gives you when you don't take care.
The director also wanted a reality look which interlace gives.
I just wanted to have the option of seeing how much stobing there was if I de-interlaced the footage ok, and if it was minimal I'd have the option of using it.
How much resolution loss is there, it won't be worse than SD??

it will cut your H res in half so 1080 goes to 540 it will just double one field to fill in the gap but 1920 times 540 equals 1036800 and 1280 times 720 equals 921600 ....you'll still get the same number of pixels of the 720P format maybe little better according to the numbers however numbers are numbers....some may disagree but i've done it with HDV cameras worked and looks excellent. post to a 23.98 and y ou get 24P cool huh...and cheap
Just remember numbers are NOT everything.....first comes your story second comes the food you eat while making it

1080i isnt really half 1080P because of interlace usees thick lines do reduce interlace flicker.
And deinteraling 50i to 25p creates as much strobing as 25P from the beginning.
The best way would have been to shot 25P with open shutter.
