We're shooting a doc and plan to record from HVX200 directly to a Firestore. We plan to dump the Firestore onto an external hard drive via PC Laptop while we're out shooting. Can this be done as a simple file transfer without special software? What kind of files will come off of the Firestore and how can they be viewed on a PC? Thanks!

They'll be MXF files, which can be viewed using Panasonic's P2 Viewer program.

The FireStore has two 1394 (FireWire) ouputs, one for recording, and one for the connection with a computer. You have to enable the connection from the menu on the FireStore, but it is all included in the FireStore package. So it is basically this:

Your computer has a FireWire port? Well, just plug the FireStore in and there it is, your external hard drive with the freshly shot material!

Barry -

Thanks for your response. I'll test it out tomorrow.

Don't forget to "Organize P2" prior to transferring to the PC... "Organize P2" is available in the FS-100 menu-

If you don't, there'll be trouble. Trust me :)

Thanks for the heads-up to run Organize P2.

I'm still trying to read MXF files. I'm working off of a Windows laptop. Loaded the drivers from the disk that came with the HVX200 but the files didn't play. Is there separate P2/MXF viewing software that's not on the disk that comes with the camera?

You need the P2 Viewer software from Panasonic to view the clips:

http://panasonic.biz/sav/p2/

Navigate to whatever folder contains the "CONTENTS" folder, and the viewer will load the clips

What NLE/editing program do you have?

Cabin... I just shot 4 national commercials on the HVX/FS-100 and imported the raw MXF files to external firewire drives through a Sony Vaio, then used the Raylight codec ($199) to decode the MXF files to AVI's to view dalies ( you can edit with them as well. Cineform, Aspect HD (HD Connect codec ) is also a great alternative for viewing/editing. Best...
