I have a HVX200 that I am shooting in 720/60P for some action sport stuff. I noticed that even though we are shooting at the highest frame rates we often have frame blurring during some of the scenes. I know that paning the camera adds to some of this but my question is should I set the shutter speed faster? I'm picking the frame rate and letting the camera auto shutter, iris, etc...
You can... I generally like a faster shutter with sports, you will lose some of the natural bluring but it will be more clear... just so you know, the motion will not be as smooth.

So with faster shutter speeds it makes the footage more steppy?
correct.... but test it out, many people prefer the look.

Think about it -- if you are shooting at 60 frames per second but the shutter is set to 1/250, each frame shows only about 1/4th of the movement in each frame. That will freeze the action nicely, but the drawback is that the motion will appear jumpy.

I've shot some action sports stuff in 60P, and I usually don't use a shutter speed any lower than 1/250. Although I prefer to shoot at 1/500, I think the "steppy" look really lends it self to action. Check out this thread for a piece that I shot in 60P with 1/500 shutter, this will give you an idea of what the footage will look like.

You shot that video in 500 shutter speed! I love that video piece and have seen it before. Do you do much stuff with shutter speed higher than 500?
I use fast, really fast shutter speed, when I'm over cranking, or know I'll be doing slo-mo in post. Aside from that, fast, but not too fast.

I've never shot anything higher than 500, I don't see the purpose unless you are shooting something moving RIDICULOUSLY fast and you don't want any motion blur. I probably could have gotten away with 250 on that shoot, but after seeing how that thing turned out, if I've got the light, I'll opt for 500.
