Blade Disintegration Effect

I would like to create the disintegration effect like the one in Blade when vampires are killed. I'm using Maya and new/ish to particles. Does anyone know of a tutorial, book, or dvd that might help me figure out how to do this?

Disintegrations are old news and very easy effects to achieve.
the easy fast way:
Capture frame in AE
Blue screen it
add footage background
Apply shatter or pixel polly or similar to bluescreened frame
animate....
tadah! ...

there you go

This is the easy simple way to do it, it can go any way you want to but follows the same pattern no matter how complex you make it

Thank you, yeah I know it's old and I was considering using maya's shatter but then I also need to do a particle ash effect to dissipate and ash the chunks. I was considering doing it in compositing only with several plates shattering and masking each layer into one another, but I'm not comfortable with the level of realism I would achieve going 2D only.
