Hey,
On my DVX100 the switch is set to OFF. Under what conditions should I be using it?

When the prevailing light conditions are too bright to get proper exposure.
The ND filter is like "sunglasses" for your camera. If you use the auto-iris switch, the DVX will tell you when it needs the ND filter (it'll flash "ND 1/8" or "ND 1/64").

My 100B will warn me on screen when it is needed, either 1/8th or 1/64th. I usually need it outdoors on sunny days.

Have zebras turned on. They will tell you when areas are overexposed.

Thanks for the explanation. It helps.

Axtually ND filters are used to adjust the DOF as well, not just to cut brightness. A technique often overlooked.

Thats true, as you shoot with smaller fstop, with filter.
try using different filter for effect.
try star burst for concert.
