View Full Version : Artifacts on the edge of the clip?

Ok, just a question I was wondering if somebody could help me out with. I have imported some clips into FCP 5.04 using firewire and with the pcmia slot. On some of the clips I have noticed some artifacts or something that looks like a subtle band snow. It only seems to happen on the edge of the frame and with clips that are pretty bright on the sides( reflective water and things like that). Is this a thing with FCP? Has anybody else experienced this? They don't seem to be there when I watch the clips from the camera on a HDTV. Should it be something that I should be overly concerned about? Any insight would be much appreciated, thanks!

perhaps you can posts some screen grabs for us?

Screen grabs wouldn't hurt as mentioned in the previous reply. However, I noticed you said you were using 5.0.4. You really want to upgrade to 5.1.1 for P2 media. See the following from Apple themselves...

Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 resolves an issue in using the Import Panasonic P2 feature with
720p/24PN footage resulting in duplicate frames in rendered sequences.

That might not be the root of your problem, but you should really try to upgrade none the less.

cheers.

Sur,

I don't have a place to host any footage rigth now. So that puts me a bit of a spot. I tried to make some quicktime files. The Final cut quicktime still shows the artifact but when I make a DVCPRO HD quicktime, it seems to go away. Strange.

Thanks Varicam. I have the upgrade on order. I did hear about the problems with shooting in 720pn. I have been shooting 30pn and 60p to avoid this but perhaps there are still some issues with 5.04 like the artifacts that I have come across?

Final Cut Pro Quicktime still needs a codec that you must have used. Do you recall which one it is? DVCPro HD Quicktime is still a Final Cut Pro Quicktime, its simply one using the DVC Pro HD codec. Different codecs/sequence settings certainly could mean the difference in seeing/not seeing things such as artifacts.

cheers.

Varicam,
I used the DVCPRO HD codec from the FCP quicktime setting. I am really beginning to think that this issue is from using FCP 5.04. Checking the footage on a monitor and a tv, there isn't any artifacts. I am going to try and import some clips using the P2 log and see what happens there. Thanks again for your input.

On Mac, Comand+Shift+4 turns mouse curser into cross hairs and you can click and drag over whatever you want to take a snap shot of, and release your mouse and it will show up on your desktop. You can upload pics here, I would recremend opening that snap shot and do a save as JPEG and then upload that into the manage attachments here in this forum.

I noticed the same issue while editing, and spent countless hours trying to figure out a way to get rid of it (CC, scaling, etc.). Little black blocks popped up sporatically in the edges of the canvas whenever I had an over-white background. However, these were only present in the rendered timeline; the artifacts did not show up in the exported version, so I don't worry about them when I see just see them in FCP.

Dcarstens,

Thanks for that insight. It makes me feel better to know that it is not an isolated case and that you had no issues when exporting the final product. Whew, big relief there! Thanks again for the info!

I have found the same issue. It is isolated only to the viewer in FCP. I too spent several hours trying to fix the issue, long story short, dont worry about it. Bug in FCP.
