I am now testing exporting to dvd footage from the HVX - running into some issues.

I am editing in avid and then exporting to sorenson and then using adobe encore to create the dvd.

When I view the footage on a tv it look awfully videoish - very surprising - Looks great on the PC.

Any ideas what I can modify - one thing i am eyeing is that sorenson uses 29.97 for the frame rate when outputting for dvd and you cannot change it to 24 - not sure if that could be causing it.

If you edited in 24 frames, output a movie file in 24 frames, and then took that to Sorenson and its converting it to 29.97, then yes I'd certainly think that would be part of the problem. I wouldn't trust Sorenson to make that conversion. I'd let my NLE do it and just let Sorenson worry about MPEG-2 math.

Also if its outputing a 29.97 MPEG-2, then yes it would look videoish, as well that's a video frame rate. You might want try something like Cinema Craft Encoder SP or TMPGenc. CCE is considered the best of the best in software encoding. So good it can rival hardware encoders to some critics eyes. TMPGenc from what I've heard (haven't used it) is a very solid encoder that gets bad mouthed because its extremely cheap in price (but from those that swear by it, not cheap in quality). Anyway...

cheers.

Why export to a compressed format that needs to be compressed again.

Export from AVID to a self contained AVI or whatever and encode that.

its not the compression - i just output it to tmpenc and the encoding went well - but for some reason the dvd version feels videoish - the footage on the PC doesnt at all.

The dvd is 24 frames progressive

Now you say...

its not the compression

and

the footage on the PC doesnt at all

So a couple of follow up questions to that then...

1) You have checked and are satisifed that the compressed movie file is at 24p and not 29.97?

2) The footage on the PC you're referring to is the raw footage/exported movie file OR the MPEG-2 created by TMPGenc?

cheers.

if i play the finished dvd on the pc it looks very good - same dvd on tv looks like video so I suspect the pulldown is not being read by the dvd player -

even so - the tv is not progressive so I am not sure it would matter - but if i put a film in like "6th sense" or something - the motion doesnt look videoish

Its really a motion thing more then anything - that fluid too smooth motion indicative of video

You indicated your export to Sorenson.

Then you indicated you compressed in TMPG.

Which is it?

sorry - workflow has been changing to try to solve the problem -

the workflow i am using now is avid ->export 24 frame Qt reference - compress and encode with TMPG. Then author dvd with dvd-lab studio

My output from 720/24pn is to BitVice at 24/16:9 and then DVD SP.

We play it off a progressive DVD player to a plasma and a LCD and it looks really good.

We've even created a few HD DVDs.

They look like broadcast HD.

have you tried those dvds on a non-progressive player with a crt tv to see if it looks good there?
