Finally bought my Canon eos 5D :) now its time to burn some cash on the glass... so far i have chosen Canon 24-70mm f2.8 & Canon 70-200mm f2.8 but i am also looking for a super dooper wideangle lens for some impact shots of landscapes & groups... i am leaning towards the Canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5 lens is there any thing better out there... what do you guys use for wideangle photography & what would you recommend i have also looked at tokina 12-24 f4 & Sigma 10-20mm any comments on these?? or shall i stick with genuine canon glass?

besides whats your best wideangle lens?

The Canon 10-22 is known to be one of the best wide angle lenses. Also, keep in mind the 5D has a full frame sensor, so it will actually be great amounts wider then the same lens on a different DSLR such as the 20D or rebel.

I'm saving for the 5D myself, great choice.

I have the 17-40mm and the 15mm fisheye and love em both. I'd recommend them or the 16-35mm

thanks for the input guys...

oh yeah Kai... damn right the 15mm f2.8 looks awsome & specially on full frame it might just be enough for my needs but as i said earlier i am leaning towards the 10-22mm more than the others & one of the reasons is that this way i'l have almost (just about) all the focal length coverage from 10mm all the way to 200mm with just three high quality lenses...

guess i'l have to try out both 10-22mm & 15mm as both are in the same range & each have positive things going for them... i knew it would be a hard decision LOL.

on the side note i am going crazy about the 85mm f1.2 but gosh the price is just too much for me... guess i'l have to save up every penny for it.. what a lens!

Good luck Joey with your savings for the 5D, i have seen your work & i can just imagine to what effect you can use it. Let us know how it goes.

EDIT :

Cant have the CANON EF-S 10-22MM F3.5-4.5 with the 5D Just missed the "S" in "EF-S" on the lens... 5D isnt compatible with EF-S lenses... so that leave me with Kai's suggested 15mm & 17-40 Cool stuff :)

Hold your horses...

I do not think 10-22mm zoom made for small sensors fits your 5D, which is a FULL FRAME camera. At least do not buy it mail order before trying to fit one on...

I have the 20mm 2.8 lens, which is great. 16-35mm 2.8 is a piece of sh**. I had mine serviced 2 times and it still produced the said quality, my pro friends have the same experiences. It is impossible to make a fast super wide angle zoom at a reasonable cost (under 10k$). The f4.0 17-40 is ok, but nor recommended for full frame sensor SLRs like 5D. Primes are the way to go for fast wide angles. The tolerances at WA are just too minuscule.

I have been doing this for a living for 28 years now, so better believe me.

(I have 20mm 2.8, 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 300mm 4, 400mm 4 and both TS lenses for EOS-1DMkII, EOS-1Ds and EOS-5D bodies.)

Thanks Petrus i noticed that the 10-22 wont be compatible when i was going through the manual as its a EF-S lens & 5d aint compatible with those... so thats out of the question.

i'l head to calumet & try out the lenses before i buy any... i have bought the 24-70mm f2.8 & it is a great lens, at 24 its wide enough on 5D...

i borrowed a Sigma 17-35 from a friend & i have done some tests & in those it dont look too bad to me for the price.... most of the time (95%+) 24mm on the 24-70mm is good enough for what i shoot its only occasionaly that i feel like i need to go wider than 24mm & i think for that i can make some compromise as my main prioerty now is to get that 85mm f1.2 lens... so i'l find something thats not to heavy on the pocket in the wideangle range.

85 f1.2 is a great lens, also in price & weight. The question is, do you get enough use for the extra f-stop from 1.8 to 1.2 when you have to pay a LOT more money and lug all that glass around most of the time for nothing? With modern digital cameras you get high quality also with higher ASA speeds and if it is the extremely shallow DOF effect you are after it can be faked in Photoshop to some extent.

Thus is it a real photographic need or the urge to have the fastest, baddest lens on the planet?

You have made a very very good point my friend & you are right it seems to be more of an urge to have the fastest lens... i been thinking hard & for the price of 85mm f1.2 i could probably get hold of all the primes u mentioned above i.e 20mm 2.8, 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 & may be a couple more lenses on top of that & it would no doubt be a better use of the money.

Here is a shot taken with 5D and 85mm at f 1.8 (full open). Not much DOF...

Actually just a crop from a vertical shot. Some tweaking with PS...

I have the 24-70 2.8 and the 85mm 1.8, both are awesome lenses. The 24-70 is really wide enough for most things. If I were getting a wide prime, I would probably go with the 20mm 2.8 or even with the Sigma 15mm 2.8 fisheye. I have shot with the fisheye and there are very good tools for removing the distortion (if you desire it gone)

The 85mm 1.8 is awesome, the 85 1.2L is super-awesome, but weighs a ton and probably not worth it unless you are a full time portrait / fashion photographer.

Another vote for the 85mm 1.8. On the 5D it would probably become my favorite lens. On my 20d I use the 50 1.4 more often because with the crop sensor the 85 is a little long for most of my shooting, but on the 5D it would be perfect.
