any shortcut method to import illustrator symbols to AE7?

i have a bunch of illustrator symbols to animate in AE7 and i was wondering is there a fast way to import it instead of puting every symbols into different layer and save it and import the .ai file into AE7....

i tried importing the symbol file saved(.ai) in illustrator but doesn't work

From the import dialog below the browse window, have you tried import as Composition-cropped layers??

In Illustrator, in the Layers tab, you'll see a button in the upper right corner that brings up a pop-up menu. With your layer selected, go to this menu and select "Release to Layers (Sequence)". Then, you'll be able to select all of these sublayers and drag them out of that original layer so that AE can see them as layers.

From there, as Steve mentioned, import as Comp should work for you.
