crackling sound

My sound randomly crackles lately on the dvx. I'm wondering if it's cause Im using recycled tapes (4 or 5 times taped over) or if I somehow blew the inputs on the XLR cables. (I was doing a doc and some guy screamed into the mic) any info would be helpful

Possibility that it may be 'audio drop-outs'. And that can be coming from the old tapes or the audio heads.....
