Tripod? :)

Cool looking setup, but doesn't all that other stuff get in the way of the VIDLED onboard light?

Thanks

Sweet lookin' rig brother! I've got same set up except for the Marshall and mattebox. Waiting for RR to come out with theirs. How are you liking the Marshall with the Noga?

cheers,

Nice setup! Whats your address? Wouldn't you like to know.

Tripod? That is the one thing I do not have yet. The tripod pictured is a friends.

Cool looking setup, but doesn't all that other stuff get in the way of the VIDLED onboard light? Yes it does get in the way. I don't use the VIDLED with the M2, I just put eveything together to show what I got.

So how did you do the custom battery for the M2? It is about $3 worth of parts from Radio Shack. A gutted out "C" Battery holder, 2-9volt battery snap on cables wired together.

Behold my drool. Does that VidLed give you enough light for the M2? I don't use the two together, but I don't think it would, the HVX+M2 eats a lot of light. I use the VIDLED for more run and gun stuff without the M2.

Sweet lookin' rig brother! I've got same set up except for the Marshall and mattebox. Waiting for RR to come out with theirs. How are you liking the Marshall with the Noga? The weight of the Marshall can be a problem, you kind of have to crank on the knob on the Noga arm pretty good to keep it from moving around. I'm waiting for the RR as well, The Indie Snap is worthless.

cool, lets see some footage. I'll try to get some footage up shortly.

whats that art holding the monitor up? is that a strain on the rear screw mount? Is that an hd mini monitor? What do you do for your client monitors - turn them upside down too?

thanks

Nice Setup. Can you tell us where you got the short RGB cable. I am also interested in aluminum labels for my equipment. I noticed you have a label. Did you find a good deal on them?

1. It's a Noga arm
2. It seats deep into the screw mount and doesn't seam to be a problem.
3. It is a Marshall V-R70P-HDA With Nebtek Upgrade.
http://www.nebtek.com/proddetail.php?prod=101MarshallVR-70P-HDA-LI
4. If the client monitor doesn't have a flip function, yes I do turn it
upside down.

Nice Setup. Can you tell us where you got the short RGB cable. I am also interested in aluminum labels for my equipment. I noticed you have a label. Did you find a good deal on them? The cable is 20" long, they also have a really long one if anyone is interested. Here is the links for the cable and BNC adapters needed.

1-Cable- EDIT: read next post before you click link.

3-BNC adapters
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=134156&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

As for the lables, they are just custom address labels. I can't remember the site, but I made them online and instead of an address I had it say "This is property of Triple 20 Entertainment". It was like 300 for $8, very cheap.

Sorry for some reason the cable link is not working right, but I'll navigate you. Follow the original cable link above, click "HOME" up top, Type "D4" in search box. It should be the 3rd one down. The longer cable is the 4th one down and has male RCA's intsead of female RCA's like the short one.

Hi Brian,

I have an M2 as well, and really can't seem to nail edge-to-edge focus. Does your "locked" setup work well, and could you descibe it?

Thanks,

Rob

Yes it works great. Read this thread at the Redrock forum, it might help.

Brian,

Thanks for the link. So did you mimic the setup as outlined by Steve? Do you have the same edge to edge sharpness as illustrated there too?

Thanks,

Rob

dvInsight,
I did the same thing that Steve did, and I am getting edge to edge sharpness. But keep in mind different SLR lenses can change edge to edge sharpness slightly depending on what fstop you are using. If you can help it try not to have the fstop all the way open on the SLR lens and you'll be fine.

Thanks,

I have shot for years (35mm still + standard def Video) and understand the issues of stopping down from wide open to hit the optical sweet spot. The M2 I started with had issues and I had to get a new ground glass (plastic) which improved things greatly, but it has been one adjustmet after another ( I had to drop the motor down too) and edge to edge sharpness has proven elusive.

This is something that I have not spent minutes on, but hours and combinations of lenses. So anything that locks everytthing in place is a giant step forward. I can probably forgo the excellant Zacuto plate for now and just lock it all up. The equipment list looks fairly modest.

Thanks,

Rob

plus the light loss of your lens you choose to use at any given time of course.

how much light loss is there with the M2 ??? 2 stops 4 stops ??? I loose a little more than 1 stop. I'm a film guy, so I use a light meter set to ASA 100. Keep in mind I rate 500 speed film at ASA 400. We did a night bonfire scene last week, and we had to use a 1200 HMI + a couple par cans to get the wide shots.

I decided I would rate my equipment to maybe help those of you looking to buy any of these products.

The price was not a factor in rating these products.
Scale from 1-10, 10 being the best.

HVX 200P (10)
2 - 8 gig P2 cards (9)
M2 Nikon mount (hard mounted to camera, and custom batt. mod.) (9)
35mm f2 (7)
50mm f1.4 (7)
85mm f1.8 (9)
Redrock FF (5)
Marshall HD monitor (Pany batt. upgrade) (9)
short D4 cable (10)
Indie Snap Matte Box (2)
ME66 mic (7)
VIDLED onboard light (9)
Noga arm (8)
Spiderbrace 2 (8)
4 batt. Turbo Charger (TC400) (10)
7 batts. (1 Pany and 6 SCPAN-6000) (9)

Fell free to ask me why I rated something the way I did.

Why the 5 for the Redrock Follow Focus?

Brian@202020
08-01-2006, 03:07 PM
Why the 5 for the Redrock Follow Focus? The Redrock FF has too much play for my taste. It has about a 1/4 inch of play. I have a marking system down now, but still it's kind of a pain. Also the gear box is big and gets in the way when I try to use it on the HVX without the M2. The FF I'm looking forward to is the Fly Focus. It is more compact, it has hard stops, and is even less expensive. I am waiting for reviews before I buy, but it looks promising.

UPDATE: Just got an email back from Joel at Hyson Films, he said the Fly Focus has 0 play. This is great news. He also said the .8 pitch gears for it would be out in Sept. sometime. That's kind of a bummer, but for those of us used to waiting for Redrock stuff, it's nothing.

Is that short D4 cable something other than what came with the HVX? If so, where did you get it?
EDIT: Never mind, I see you explained that earlier in this thread.

Also, you recommend the Spider brace 2 for use with the M2? Any additional thoughts on your experience with it?
Thanks.

R Gale,

I don't use the Spider Brace with the M2. The rig is just too front heavy. I'm a former Machinist and still have access to mills. I was thinking of making an aluminum plate that sets the rig farther back on the Spider Brace to even the weight out, but have yet to do so.

Marshall HD monitor (Pany batt. upgrade) (9)

I've just purchased a Marshall HD monitor. Is there anyway I could get Pany batt. upgrade now?

short D4 cable (10)

What is this cable for?

Noga arm (8)

I found that there are two types of Noga arms; one regular and one heavy duty one. Which one do you have?

4 batt. Turbo Charger (TC400) (10)

How fast does this Turbo Charger charge a 3 hour Pany batt.?
Where can I buy it?

Also, have you found anything else about the Fly Focus?

I'm about to shoot a feature on this set-up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Best,
Nook
