I am updating this thread since the time has come to release it for HorrorFest. This little project is called
'Love is the most deceptive feeling'. It is a story about a guy who has been dumped by his girlfriend and tries to cope with that in his own demented way.
I have shot this in the form of a video clip, since I wrote a song that plays along the video, so there is no dialogue or whatever. But I have added some 'lyrics' in the form of floating text in various shots...in order to put the viewer in the right mood and make the movie more dramatic.
I wouldn't call it a film actually, more like video art. But it's bloody and messy and disturbing (not scary though).

Some interesting facts about it:

- I shot most of it on my own, in my appartment.
- For 2 shots I had my brother in one and Stratos (co-producer) in the other to handle the camera.
- It was the first time I use my KRYOLAN blood and it rocked! If you want to spend a few money on some top quality blood, I would definitely suggest KRYOLAN.
- Blood can be slippery especially in a bathtub, so be careful.
- Blood can also hurt like hell if it comes in contact with your eyes, so be careful again.
- The song was written a few years back with Soundtrack Pro.
- Editing with Premiere Pro2.0 (w/Magic Bullets)

Yes, you can show any promotional material as well as pre, production, and post material as long as it isnt any actual footage from the film. Good luck.

the title of your movie reminds me of the Indecision song called Falling in love is like setting yourself on fire and hoping you won't get burned. Nice poster too by the way, simple but intruiging

thanx ! actually this film is more like a video clip...it is enriched with lyric-like quotes that sort of guide you through what's happening....so this is kinda putting some people off because it's not a real (what's real anyhow) movie....

if I were to categorise it myself I would put it in video clip/video art....

anyway, I read somewhere that you can put more than 1 of your works here, so I have another project that I'm about to finish soon and I would love to be able to finish another one (I'm writting a new script influenced by The Tenant of Polanski) so I hope that I'll be able to show something else as well

A few details on the short.

Basically it is a love story but it also 'talks' about the mind and the tricks it can play. To be honest, in most of the things I have done so far, it seems that I can't stop 'playing' with the games of the mind and trying to let the viewer decide what exactly is going on, even though I always have a clear picture in my head about the story.

A few technical things as well:

I starred in the film and that was a bit tricky when it came to directing myself coz apart from 2 shots that I got some help from my brother and my best friend, the rest I did them on my own so I had to do a lot of back and forth to check the shots . But it was fun doing it myself and I wasnt a hard@ss to the director, hehehe.

I enjoyed the scenes with all the blood coz it was the first time that I actually got to use it, I had it for 6 months but I never got the chance to use it in a movie so it was great and I think it worked quite well, money well spent I guess.

The music is a piece I wrote 2 years ago when I was playing around with Soundtrack Pro at my old job and my brother who is a sound engineer, helped me to extend it a bit so that it got to 2 minutes.

And the poster was made by my best friend and co-founder of cut 2 the chase production, Stratos.

All in all it was a very tiring experience coz I did it all (script, shooting, editing) in 4 days and it might seem ok to you with the experience you have, but to me it was ...an ARGH! situation.

So that's it for now...

very cool blood, very very very cool blood!

VersuS
08-13-2006, 02:03 AM
Piece of cake!!! We were very concerned about the cleaning up but you can wipe it off so easy that it makes you want to pour some more ;)
I washed my clothes and had no problem (but dont leave it drying out on them coz it doest actually dry out and then you're scr*ed). I used it on floors, walls, doors, objects...had no problem. I haven't used it on some types of walls...where they have many little gaps coz then the blood will drip inside the gaps and there's no way to wash it off afterwards. But generally, you can drop as much as you want on your floor (marble, wood etc) and take it off with you hands laters or just a wet handkerchief.

I got 2 types of blood, a dark one and sticky, and a lighter version that you can also use safely inside your mouth. I also bought some capsules but I haven't used them so far and an eyedropper. We havent used the eyedropper as well...it's supposed to be safe with putting it on your eyes..but we're still chicken about it....lol....

Found your thread, I see what you mean... Did you buy eye blood? Cause if not I wouldn't recommend putting any old blood in your eyes. Eye blood, is safe to put in your eyes, though you may have a hard time getting anyone to sell it to you cause of liability issues. And it can sting like HELL.

VersuS
08-14-2006, 01:43 AM
Well....we havent used it as I said.....It stings huh? Well if there is no permanent damage I could live with that coz to be honest, bloody eyes are great. But I dont really like messing up with my eyes....eyes in general should be protected at all costs....

The hottest hot sauce I've ever come across is called "Da Bomb'. It's main ingredient, orange juice. It tastes good for about 30 seconds then it kicks in. For the next 5-10 minutes, the worst feeling in the world takes place in your mouth/esophogus/stomach.

Chiming in.

I've read that you're making an effort sans budget, which is really great. There are a lot of us that wouldn't get out and do something if we don't have the money to do it, and it's a hinder to the creative process at times; I commend you.

The stills look good-n-bloody. It's nice that you can get a great red splatter on lo/no-budget, huh?

In regards to the english, is the movie going to feature subtitles or are the actors english speaking?

On the thread-- It would probably be a great benefit to organize your key updates and stills on the first page. I had already been looking through the thread and found them, but newcomers might want to see them all on the front page. It could only help!

Just a suggestion. Good Luck to you!

I ll try to do that if I get the time kholi! thanx for bringing it up though coz I'd never would have thought about it.

This movie (coz I m putting 2 in the fest), is not your average-type movie...there is no dialogue...think of it as a video clip in mute where you have your lyrics on screen....more or less....

In my other movie, the voice over and the dialogue will be in greek and I will put subtitles (a process that I hate coz its boring).

As for your comments...I REALLY appreciate what you said! its not the budget....its lack of people who are interested in that...and because we are not so eager to start looking out there in the street...it's mainly the 2 of us...

Things for you in the states are sometimes easier coz there's LOTS of people in this biz (even when we talk about independent filmmaking) LOTS AND LOTS and you are organized and you help each other etc etc etc.

Even If i wanted to approach film students/actors/crew from some local schools and colleges...it wouldnt be so easy coz the culture here in terms of filmmaking is not the one I am looking for (the one you have there or even in most european countries). Really I dont want to get into the way people treat film making in Greece and how they approach the idea of working in this industry EVEN in no-budget/indie stuff....we re WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY behind you guys....

Kholi

I could only imagine how much more difficult it is to do what you really want to. I live in Los Angeles and I often think I really am NOT trying hard enough. There are a lot of projects I want to get started on, and all these resources... no real movement. I'm trying to inspire myself to start really taking giant steps.

Honestly, you do get heaps of props for pushing forward like that. Even having the forsight to plan around what you can and can not do is great.

I didn't know you were doing only subtitles. A fresh approach is always good.

Keep pushin', mang.

The hard thing is to have ideas that you love and a vision but not being able to make it happen ...
The good thing, actually THE BEST thing, is thinking about how we started a year before, with no equipment whatsoever, no experience, NOTHING!!!! and looking at the things we ve done in the right order...and realising how fast (at least that's what we think) we are improving ourselves, and learning things and working past problems that occur...anyway we DO get satisfaction from it and we feel good with ourselves!

Hey man thanx for reviewing!

Glad you liked it. It's exactly like that, a music-video-style with a sickness inside and lots of blood. The camera work...well you know about doing your own scenes and setting up frames and angles for yourself...its difficuuuuult! So I'm glad to hear you found it ok.
The dead guy in the tub huh? Well that's the point of all this...what exactly is going on?

To reveal my thoughts on this...in a few words....the guy gets dumped by his girlfriend, wife or whatever....he gets crazy and we see that he is chopping someone in the bath tub. Well when I wrote it I thought that people would guess it was the girl...then we see him looking down the tub and seeing himself in there...so I guess it's like he was facing his inner demons...sound familiar? hahahahaha

ps. maybe it wasnt his girlfriend that left him after all....who knows....maybe it was his other side....his 'good' side...its all up for discussion....I just liked the fact that it could confuse in a way to bring up different views of what is happening

Hey John -

Good work. It was nice to see something different, less story-driven but more artistic. There aren't many shorts like that in these festivals. It felt very poetic - I liked the music and the way it all weaved together with the titles. It kind of reminded me of that Van Halen Right Now Video. And that's a good thing - I loved that video. And especially the SNL parody of it for clear gravy...but I digress.

My biggest criticism is that you really should have done more with the lighting. Since there's not much story, just images, you should have done some more artistic things with lighting - that would have really put this up a notch.

Overall, very good work! It was nice to see something short and sweet.

Hey Nikki Thanx for checking up on thiS!!! Very happy you had an overall good feeling towards it! As for the lighting, as I always said in both of my movie threads, we own no lighting equipment, its something we ll be looking to get in the next few months for any future project. So for this one I didnt really do anything since in most scenes I got direct sunlight from the big balcony doors in my flat or I had the lights in the bathroom and my room...I actually dont know much about lighting I have to be honest, in terms of setting up. So maybe I could have even made something out of the lights I already had in there...but I will definitely try to improve on that area!!!!!!

Thanx again!

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

Hey John/VersuS. Got around to this one tonight. Another one-man show. It's great to see people bolder than I am. Cause I can't do one man, I can't even do two or three man; I just won't let me.

A different take on the idea. Poetic. Takes even more guts to go out and do it like you want to.

John! I finally have a chance to drop by and post in your thread! I really liked this film. i thought it was beautiful in a way. Poetic, and flowing. you are right about the end...you think it is his girlfriend but it is himself. I would bet odds that the other self with the mask is the hurt and anger he feels and that he splits so he can kill himself that way. Just my take on it. I agree, lighting could be improved, but that comes when you have "Lights" right? :-) Good work! I enjoyed watching this one.

Hi Versus

Sorry for taking so long to get round to this, but Ive just finished watching the shorts today.

I liked that you did something totally differrent with this, but I'm not a big fan of text on the screen. Well, when I say that, I mean it would be good for a pop video but I dont find it particularly cinematic.

That said you found your own style instead of ripping someone off. Thats often the first step to becoming a distinctive film-maker. it was your own creation and if you can (and will) improve on the execution then it will begin to 'work' for you I think.

does that make sense?...lol It also sounds like you had very limited resources to work with, I know what that's like and you get massive kudos for getting not one but two shorts made for this fest!

Well done!

Doing something so different was something that bothered me for days..didnt know if I should submit this in here or not in terms of theme and the approach I used....when I shot this I didnt know about horrorfest, I did it for my own pleasure actually and wanted to make something with the blood I had just bought, play around with some MB and also use the song I had written...the text is 50% necessity (coz I was doing it on my own and couldnt record any VO on my own) and 50% personal taste coz I love floating text in credits etc...however it was not so professionaly delivered and this is my bad

I liked this one. It kind of felt like a music video, but not really. But I could see where some people were coming from.

You know, I didn't care for the titles. I think the film can definitely stand on its own without them. Although some are poetic, they feel expository to me. And if I'm busy reading BIG TEXT on the screen, then I'm not paying 100% attention to the REAL film on the screen. I'd like to see a "titleless" version if you got one.

Nice imagery. Theatrical without being "stagey", if you know what I mean. The natural lighting works for me in this regard.

Good job.

Versus,

I think it was a good idea to submit your work. Sometimes you get praise, sometimes you get a slap, but always you get a chance for people to see your film and comment about it. Which I dont know about you, but for me is where it's all at.

Once again I think you did a good job with what you had. You have good ideas and considering you only did this for an experiment it makes it even more impressive. Some nice little moments created in this piece.

Thanx Darkline!! Again, coming from a guy who did such a wonderful piece, is really important! I was expecting not only a slap but something worse, people passing by not giving a damn....but hey, we live to be proven wrong, sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worse. This time it I enjoyed being proven wrong!

I am thrilled to announce that Love Is The Most Deceptive Feeling has been sent to another festival in Greece, called Platform. The festival will take place in December and there is screen viewing for all the participants' films. So....exciting news for us!!!!!!

Congrats on the fest exhibition in Greece.

Ok, so I watched the "title-less" version. MUCH, much better. Now it doesn't look like a college media arts class project. So now we have a film that has a single piece of music backing the whole thing without anything else, and so now it definitely has a music video feel. That't not a bad thing, it's just is what it is. Fortunately, the music seems to fit.

As is, it is a nice little piece. Lots of symbolism and still very theatrical.

There are many avenues after that to expand this piece on.

Good job and good luck!

Acting: Not bad but obviously no dialogue so couldn’t really tell.
Script: No script to speak of but a truly neat concept, (very original)
Direction: Interesting.
Music: Really suited the piece, engaging and emotional.
Editing: Tight.
Lighting: Some really nice colour work here.
Loved: The fact you tried something completely different props! The intro/ outro BW imagery, (what was that?), The spinning room, (great shot!)
Hated: The font, the split screen (I just don’t like em:( )

Overall: Wow this took me by surprise, I think you really expressed yourself and took us on a journey inside the characters head.
It worked. Keep sticking to your own style. A very interesting film, in-fact the most original I've seen here yet.:dankk2:

I don't know what to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you all so much!!! This means SO MUCH to me you can't imagine!!!!!

ps. cinealma I can't thank you enough for what you said about the text....your input in this piece of art has been tremendous and I can't stop thinking how much nicer it looks without the text. I decided to send the title-less version to this fest in Greece as well. So far I've only sent the online forms and was supposed to go to the post office today to mail the dvds...but I ll wait another day to make the titleless version. THANK YOU! The remark about the college media arts project really made me realise trully how it looked and how it looks now. Thanx!

Hey John, I want to give you a better critique than the quickie I did before.

First of all, I love the passion you convey in your film. It is a direct result of the passion you have in your filmmaking, story-telling and vision. It is just stunning.

You film is so moving and filled with emotion.

It is funny, because where as I like the subtitles and the artistic way they are presented... they are not needed at all. This is such a great example of fine story-telling. You tell a story that is completely understandable without a single verse of dialogue. The images tell the story!

The one thing that constantly bother's me is the eyes opening. I want his "love" to be dead, gone and never return. I guess that is a bit final, but in this short, I wouldn't mind if he has just cut off a huge part of himself. (though, I do love the shot! I mean, heck... that is a great shot!)

Your cinematography and editing are so polished and pro. The color choices are flat-out fantastic. I love the blown-out and bleached look of many of the scenes. And then the warmth of the bedroom. Such contrast.

The camera work is well done. I have not attempted the handheld or quick zoom work in a film yet. I hope that I can acheive what you have done. Which is basically implenting cuts of handheld and zooms without drawing attention to them or being distracting. A feat I don't see successfully acheived often, especially in the early stages of filmmaking.

The editing is grand.

The music works very well.

This is work that you shoould be very proud of.

I have just watched this again for like the 20th time... I do understand the eye opening. I am sorry that it has taken me so long.

I applaud this work and look forward to more of your work.

You have a firm grasp of filmmaking and story-telling and you do it in the most uncoventional ways. That can rarely be said anymore.

Congratulations on this fine piece of work!

Ted

It's funny....I set out to do this out of the blue...didnt plan on doing anything a the time....we were actually just started planning The Door Between (without yet knowing about Horrorfest)....So I was listening to some tunes....and writing some lyrics and stuff ....and suddenly I felt an urge to do something coz being just me and Stratos its always hard to really go out and make something, sometimes he cant, some other time I might be occupied with something else...and at the time it's been a really long time before we had done anything (even test footage) with the camera...so I wrote those lines ...wanted to create an emotional piece of dialogue that actually is VERY personal to me and my personal life....and then I took the camera and just wrote down the scenes...I knew I'd use my song but the first cut of it was less than 1 second, so had my brother make an extended version of it (he is a great guy) and thus I had my 2mins to film.

So apart from the scene in the bathtub where Stratos came a Saturday evening to help with the camera (that is his camera work with my direction), every other shot was done by myself.

I had a great time filming this on my own, placing the camera and checking the frames...doing multiple takes to be sure...I enjoyed the spinning room, both takes , the POV and the other and I can tell you my head was spinning for the rest of the day....

Anyway, this is how it happened....and I prefer this one to The Door Between artistically even though The Door feels more like a movie to me and gives me goosebumps every time the end credits roll.

All in all....when you've done something that you have broken down so f*** many times and you have started to see it as little pieces and not as a whole...not as a 3rd person in this....you cant really appreciate what you've achieved even if its something really small.

Reading your comments and yours especially Ted made me pause and say 'hey...was it in the end something really sweet and good looking in its own amateurish way?' and the answer comes...YES

Thanx Man!

TheatreGuy

Hey again, John...

I forgot to mention the spinning room. I loved that! I was trying to figure out if you were on a "lazy susan" spinning disk or something. And the POV shot, is that the camera on a tripod on the same disk? Very cool.

I can totally appreciate the "one man show" footage. How did you like doing it? HA!

The simplicity of your film is marvelous. Maybe it's too simple for you feel like it is a film. That is why I had referred it like a music video. I guess it is, now that I hear how you wrote the song and lyrics before shooting it.

Either way, it works. I would NEVER refer to this as amateurish. Absolutley not.

You should send a copy of this to people who need music videos done. They would be blown away at the story-telling that you accomplished in such a profession way!

The spinning room....ok.....maybe I should make a BTS of this just for the laughs....no chair...no...POV I m holding the camera and spinning around the room...the chair would not help me since the area in which I was standing was small for a chair to do this properly and I didnt think of a chair at the time...looool (shame on me tried to explain myself...hahaha)...and the shot where you see me spinning around, well just put the camera on the tripod (love you tripod!) and started spinning again really fast...of course I upped the speed of these shots but when I shot i wasnt sure how well it would show on screen with the speed up so I spinned myself REALLY fast...lol....oops....dizziness come back ...

This vid was great.

I liked the different feel of it. I liked the mask and I liked the acting. I thought the story was a little angst-ridden teenager for me, but then again, I'm not very deep, so I could have missed something.

Very good music by the way, and a nice solid effort.

Ian, there is a title-less version you can download, at the first page of this thread you can find the link. After many suggested it, I realised that this piece works without the text. Seeing it quite a few times title-less, the video is much much much more film-like, and the viewer can emphasize on what he's seeing and not what he's reading. If you want for your own pleasure you can check it out and tell me if it worked better for you without the text.

Than for watching and commenting!

Thanx Jack. Just read your other review for The Door Between. I was really happy to wake up today and find you posted in both my movies!

I hope that I can make the transition from poetry and philosophy to film-making quite soon. I am not saying that I denounce those two characteristics nor that they dont belong in my movies, its me, i cant and dont want to change me. But I feel that to progress and improve I must use them and not abuse them ;)

All of the above had the time or made the time to view my movies and most importanlty comment on one or both of them. Seeing as how crazy this week has been for most people who tried to view all etc etc, I am really blessed to have gotten comments from -what I consider- the elite of dvxuser and HorrorFest in particular!!!

I want to do something for all of you BUT I have no money to send out in the form of Gift Certificates, and I surely don't have any props or objects to share from my movie (unless you want to get the fake teeth the vampires wore...gross!).
So what I have decided to do is send a copy of the Special DVD we are preparing that will include both movies, extras, photos, bts, blooper, interviews etc etc.
This DVD will most likely be finished by mid-November (that's when I will ship it out to you) so IF you feel like this is something you'd want to have then I will be honoured to send you a copy!!

So please, any of you stated at the top, SEND ME AN E-MAIL AT: j_lahanis@yahoo.gr, Stating if you want to receive the Special DVD next month or NOT! :)

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to make a section in the DVD with quotes and comments. ANYONE WHO DOES NOT WANT TO APPEAR IN THOSE COMMENTS PLEASE SAY SO IN THE MAIL YOU WILL SEND ME! AND ALSO, IF YOU WANT TO APPEAR, YOU WANT YOUR NICKNAME OR YOUR FULLNAME???

THANX AGAIN!!! IT's BEEN A BLAST!!! AND AS THE CREDITS SAY IN THE DOOR BETWEEEN...til next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

Music video? This was tougher for me, as the audience has to be a pretty fast reader in spots to keep up with the type on the screen … and while doing that they risk missing visuals that we should be focusing on in the film. I’m not sure if this was more of an expressionist piece or not, as I just didn’t really get it. Was he killing himself inside? What? I dug the opening title with the backwards sound, etc., but that was probably the strongest point of the film for me, which I hate to say because it sounds harsh, but I just didn’t get this one. Sorry! L

There's been much talk about the text and I removed it so I've released a title-less version which you can download, find the link in page1 of this thread.

You can think of it as music video, think of it as video art, I dont know how to place it myself, its just a story said with the help of music and visuals.

As for what is going on, well man, that's the beauty of it, what do you think is going on? Most people got it so I feel safe knowing that it's not a clueless story but if you still need any input on it let me know, I ll be glad to explain it.

ps. it's a psycho love story (hint)
