Hi, it's been a while since I have posted here,

I was wondering if anyone had experience with firewire hard drive taps that record uncompressed strait from the camera. I tried searching for old posts about this, but I was unable to find any.

I want to know if it is worth renting a unit(how much do they normally go for) and how much better is the image quality, as well as, is the uncompressed data compatible with FCP.

I have a large project coming up, and I have my DVX100A, my DP is excellent, and I want the image quality to be superior, and I have heard some good things about these taps.

I also have access to HD Beta decks that will allow me, for free, to dub the final project on to an HD beta tape. So the idea is to maintain the highest image quality throughout all proccess of the film

Any input on this please, if you have used it, please let me know what you experencied, and if you know of any rental houses in the NYC area, please let me know.

Thanks,

Matt

See this thread. The DV compression takes place in the cam so theres no way to avoid it

There is a mod you can do to the camera so you can get 4:4:4 though. It's like 3,000 bucks I think so I'd say you'd be just better off getting an hvx. You have to plug in directly to a hard drive. There's a guy on this site that was showing it off. I can't rememebr the link though. Ill see if I can find it.

Andromeda!!! that is the name of the unit I saw and remmembered a while back. Thanks for the posts, Im going to go research the Andromeda

Ha, I wish I could afford the HVX, if it's not enough having to buy the camera, those P2P flash cards are plenty expensive all by themselves

Thanks again

do people really plug in an HD straight to their dvx-100 and capture onto that instead of onto a dv tape?
