Thank you Mikko Wilson http://www.mikkowilson.com/, Justin Dubin www.justindurban.com (http://www.justindurban.com/),
and Larry R http://www.nrestudios.com/, for hosting the mirror sites!

A woman with fragmented memory shows up in the middle of the night at her ex-lover's door. As she
struggles to piece together why she's come back and the reason she left in the first place, the thin
lines between love and hate, attraction and repulsion, and sex and violence become dangerously obscured.

08.24.06 UPDATE: Basically cast ...
with the addition of the amazing Jason Liebman. Off Broadway Jason recently played Hamlet in the traditional Shakespeare, as well as Hamlet leader of an Undead Army in a play called "The Living Dead in Denmark" (opposite Amy Washke) and written by the delvery boy in "Bone Hand" Qui Nguyen! Both leads were written for Amy and Jason. I gauged Amy's interest before I even started writing, and then I offered the male lead to Jason, whom I'd never met at the time, after the script was more or less complete. But they were both in my head for these characters the whole time.

08.18.06 UPDATE: Budget to date ... watch this number grow
there used to be a budget counter here reading $18.19 as of 8/18/06 and I was gonna update it as we spent $, but no time ... so here's the budget after shooting as of 9/20/06.
(these are estimates)
materials ... $350
cast commute expenses ... $350
craft services ... $250
personnel ... $300.
TTL $1300
.. will probably go up a little more during post.

08.08.06 UPDATE: PODCAST THAT inspired the short film REKINDLED
http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podshows/390610
Specifically, starting at 2 minutes and 44 seconds in (wich happens to be an answering machine message left at 2:44 AM), that part on is where I got the idea for the short. This is from my friends Joel Israel, Reggie Watts, and Tommy Smith's podcast, "Poles Apart" from the "Straphangers Bible". BTW, Joel played Bone Hand in my film by the same name (linked from "my other films" in my sig). Find their complete podcasts at www.theapologists.net (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/www.theapologists.net)

08.07.06 UPDATE: writing process and resources ...
Some questions about my writing process and resources have come up. I haven't found a good book I like or guide specifically for shorts (and I've read a few), but here is a structure comparison chart I put together from various gurus and theory way back to Aristotle and have been using on my feature writing for about a year now. Took a good bit of study on my part to put these together so I hope you find them useful.

here are small gif versions of the pieces I used to make the poster and my banner
the actual ones that cost $1 to use are like 640 X 500 or so.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7195/1153716709.gif http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7195/1153716748.gif http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7195/1153716777.gif
Also from istock photo, there are also naked people embracing composited into the polaroid in the poster (look close you can see them) and they and other images will become more visible as the polaroid "develops" alongside with the project -- which is why they are not posted here.

Also that's a murder victim in plastic in the signature and I think I may evolve that image as well over the time which is again why it's not posted here.

istockphoto kicks ass.

Jack Daniel Stanley
07-24-2006, 01:05 AM
yeah especially for publicity stuff when you have no time or money or way to make it logistically possible to do a photo shoot.

I've cast the lead ... but the actor is out of town on a gig until August, for example.
My lead is the one in the middle
http://vampirecowboys.com/Denmark%20Photos/DENMARK%20Album%20Cover.jpg

and she's a fantastic actor fellas ...

She's upstate right now getting her classical groove on playing Elektra at the Hangar theatre.

... and no that's not from my short (she's out of town remember ) that's from a play she did here in NY that was written and directed by the delivery boy in Bone Hand, lol  http://vampirecowboys.com/past4.htm (http://vampirecowboys.com/past4.htm) .... That show kicked ass, and Amy killed 30 zombies onstage with that Samurai sword then they all came back to life and she killed them again - a fight scene which featured a dissembowling!

I have had the pleasure of directing her for the stage, however, and can't wait to work with her on camera.

Ey Jack,

Project's looking good, man! I loved your Bone Hand! I'm a friend and classmate of Herman and I loved the score to. He did a briliant job. Can't wait to see what you're gonna come up with for Horrorfest!

Cheers,

07-24-2006, 11:18 AM
lol, what is this? battle of the asian leads?

but for real though cool jack nice to see you're back.

Jack Daniel Stanley
07-24-2006, 11:27 AM
Yeah I thought the same thing when I saw your lead, even though Amy was already cast (I swear):engel017:

I know ... it will look like a J-Horror fest around here, which is kinda cool IMHO, given the horror renaissance that's going on there.

But I would jump at the chance to work with Amy under any circumstances in any genre for any part so she's always at the top of my list; her being Asian is just a side benefit for J-Horror geeks like you and me.

i_&_t
07-24-2006, 12:16 PM
like the poster! as always we are looking forward to your entry! and add us to the J-horror geeks (although our lead isn't asian- she just wishes she was)! This Amy sounds badass- looking forward to seeing her in action...

Jack Daniel Stanley
07-24-2006, 12:24 PM
Thanks!

Don't want to set up a false expectation in the type of badassness though -- the Ameister won't be doing an action role in this one.

Not saying, however, that her character ain't gonna find herself in a predicament or two that's quite difficult to get out of ...
 muahaha...
 muahahaha ...

Great! I love Better Off Dead. So let me guess the plot. John Cusack is goes back to his roots in 80's teen films only to find out that he's over 40 and can only play the parent roles now. In despair he lights himself on fire by tying six gasoline soaked rabbits to his torso and finding an ignition source at the end of disheartened assassins cigarette. Once alight he realizes his mistake and jumps into strangle accessible vat of goo labeled “biohazard”. After a short blackout he wakes to find himself in a conveniently clear bodybag. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by dozens of hot undead naked chicks in their own conveniently clear body bags. Hilarity and horror ensues. All in 5 minutes.

Congrats on your decision. As always I offer my help and support. How about some high falls, a car chase and some exploding heads?

The developing poster thing is pretty sweet... Great idea! When John said create hype you took it literally! yeah ... they announced it as an aspect of the contest/competition this time and there are dudes that have had their threads up for almost a month before me ... so I can either whine about the fact that they have had longer to garner attention, or I can try to get some of it. I kinda did like the old days when the starter pistol went off and you had no idea about the horses in the race until then ... but this is fun too though. :)

Too much talent in one man! :furious3: :crybaby: lol

Hey JD, I was wondering if there were any sources you turn to for developing your stories. At the bootcamp you talked a bit about the process you go through to develop your stories and was wondering if there was a book or something you would suggest on what makes a story really good and complete.

Personally, I think your shorts are some of the most compelling because of their substance. Technically your films are great, but you never forsake story, and that's what I really appreciate about your films. Any suggestions?

haha ... well we'll see. This is intended to be my second simplest since Shed, but I'm going nuts trying to find a location and a few other things. Also having difficulty getting the script so that I'm happy with it, though I'm pretty stoked about the story.

!!!!

Dude, were you at the DVX bootcamp in LA and didn't introduce yourself :(

Or did you but just didn't tell me your USER name. At any rate, I remember your posts from way back on Shed and would have liked to meet you.

To your question:
Here's some feature resources I've put together over the years from various sources:
(same file in Word and PDF)
http://www.frenchquarterfeatures.com/stucture_chart.doc
http://www.frenchquarterfeatures.com/stucture_chart.pdf

If you have movie magic screenwriter, I can send you a template with some structure points too.

Now the above are for Features. I haven't really found anything I love for shorts, but some the basics of the three act structure apply, especially towards the left side of the above pages.

Other than that I try to make sure the characters are invested in something emotional.

I also had a writing teacher say "writer's chase their demons", so when I come up with a concept for something, I keep tweaking it until it resonates for me. If it resonates for me -is uncomfortable, sex, hard to deal with, truly beautiful, really ugly, etc. in a way that excites or compels me, then I have found some personal truth in it and I'm on my way to having something worth hanging a film on.

Had another writing teacher (who wrote the Burt Lancaster version of Dr. Moreau, lol) say "keep churning up the earth" which basically means dig deep and don't always accept your first idea. Writer's are accustomed to lots of rewriting in late stages, but I try before I start writing actual dialog, etc. to keep playing with the big concept of it, again, until I get excited about it, rather than just accepting a decent idea early on.

All of the above driving towards the ending. When I have the ending and I feel like it buttons or makes the rest feel complete, then I structure and connive and machinate with the rest of the script towards having the ending feel like a payoff of some sort, a perfect completion, which for me in the short form feels most complete when it's actually some sort of reversal or additional twist or best of all perhaps, a question that is unanswerable, at least in it's entirety until very near the last few seconds. That's the ultimate goal I guess with my shorts.

Hope that's helpful, and thanks for your kind words,

Jack

Jack, thanks for the chart and insight. I was wondering if you've looke d at Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect by Claudia Johnson. Her thesis is that too many writers are slaves to creating conflict, as opposed to working on scripts that "connect." Your comment about working a script until it resonates for you personally emphasizes the value of connection.

Anyway, thanks for sharing all of this. I'm truly enjoying your thread and am extremely anxious to see Rekindled.

This is from my friends Joel Israel, Reggie Watts, and Tommy Smith's podcast, "Poles Apart" from the "Straphangers Bible".

You guys know Joel as Bone Hand (linked from "my other films" in my sig).

Glad to see Jack is committing to another film. After the beating he took over Bonehand I thought he might give up and take his 1st place award and rest for a while.

Go Jack! I wonder what cemeteries in Brooklyn will see a DVX crew this time!

Speaking of Brooklyn, in the words of the great Cyrus,

Caaaaaan yooooou dig it?!

I'll try to get some hard updates up soon though ... story boards, location photos, script excerpts and music ... none of those things are ready right now, but that's what you can expect until we can actually start shooting ... maybe some light and gear tests as well.

A woman with fragmented memory shows up in the middle of the night at her ex-lover's door. As she struggles to piece together why she's come back and the reason she left in the first place, the thin lines between love and hate, attraction and repulsion, and sex and violence become dangerously obscured.

(This new one is actually of our killer and our female lead!)

Don't know if I've already said it, but that poster friggin rocks yo. Thanks. Hope you like this new version ... hope I can top it in the coming weeks, may have to lock it down here :)

:) :) Love the synopsis! Tell me more!
This new polaroid may give a better idea since it's our actual costumes etc.

Still catching up in all areas of production, but hope to have hard updates (camera tests, script excerpts, etc.) regularly.

Here's part of our killer's costume that I used in the new polaroid ... don't you just love Ebay :)
http://www.frenchquarterfeatures.com/ReKindled/helmet.gif

Right now this character is about an 80% lock, enough for us to buy this on Ebay ... so while this could all change and I could have a new used $10 welding mask for nothing, it's more than likely at this point, that you will see this beauty in the actual film at this point.

That's all the "more" I have or can give right now ... more soon I hope

Does the polaroid have a place in the movie, a la Memento? Or is it only being used in the artwork?

Ok sorry no updates ... been actually working on the movie rather than this thread for a change, lol :cheesy,

But here goes, and thanks for the intrest guys, really

yo, what's new on the filmage Jack?

What up Jack? how's everything coming? Script?
Draft 13  of the script underworks ... with Draft 10 (completed 2 days ago) I finally got the script where I liked it. This has been holding things up because the logic of the screenplay's world is so tied up with the killers pathology that everything had to be just right, and as of Draft 10 I am finally able to begin working with people and giving them hard decisions. I imagine another 3 to 5 drafts at least before I'm satisfied to shoot however.

SOME UPDATE TEASERS ... (more status report really)
The welding helmet is cut ... remember what I said about the pathology of the killer being a crucial balance, i.e. what does he use and why does he use it? Well as the script developed the Helmet became harder and harder to justify in utilitarian terms of his character. It may make it's way back in but it's gone for now, though I loved the look of it. Also, didn't one of the guys in Hostel wear a welding mask? Maybe it was on to brief to matter, but still. Oh well, the danger of promoting something before the script is even finished, lol.

Also, in addition to Amy our female lead:
http://www.frenchquarterfeatures.com/ReKindled/AmySmallSerious.gif
I have cast the Male Lead. I'll make an official announcement about Jason soon when I have a head shot for him etc., but totally excited about this guy. Saw him in a play with Amy actually where he played the leader of a Zombie army believe it or not, and wrote the part for him. Actually I wrote both parts for both leads.
We also have added 2 very exciting someones that you all know to the post production team but I'll announce that later too. Wan't to do it all with the proper pomp you understand
Shooting style ideas? Let me know!:dankk2:

Hmmm ... can't say too much ... will have some dolly and style tests for you in the next couple of days though.

I will say that
1) my new skycrane will get some use ... boy value that thing adds to the shot, especially wit the dolly

2) In terms of style I was
inspired in a general since by films like:
the Ringu series (original)
Grudge (original)
equally with
Hostel
Wolf Creek
High tension
Devil RejectsOr maybe about 65% J Horror Renaissance and 35 % Nouveau Grindhouse

And yet perhaps more specifically by:
Les Yeux Sans Visage (eyes without a face)
Se7en
Hellraiser 1
Audition
Mothman Prophecies
Wendigo
Momento
November
Psycho
Asian Featurette Horror Anthology "Extremes" 1 & 2
Asian Short Horror Anthology "Underworld" and "Legend"
The Literary Horror Anthology (as in books) Borderlands. While favorites Still Include:
Hell Raiser 2
The Thing
Halloween
Halloween 2
Evil Dead 2
Scanners
Jeepers Creepers until they show the monster
Jaws
Misery
The Howling
Altered States
Nightmare 1
(and more I'm forgetting right now)

I can't express how much I'm looking forward to this one. All the style you just listed in a short horror film... awesome.

I liked the welding mask though. You should put it in the background of one of your sets to add scariness and because you almost used it in the movie. I'd watch for it.

Proud to announce the addition of the amazing Jason Liebman.

I wrote the leads for Jason and Amy.

Amy and I go way back and since then she's done such great things as appear on Law and Order.

I saw Jason in a play with Amy and ... well the res his history

Off Broadway Jason recently played Hamlet in the traditional Shakespeare, as well as Hamlet leader of an Undead Army in a play called "The Living Dead in Denmark" (opposite Amy Washke) and written by the delivery boy in "Bone Hand" Qui Nguyen!

I think for scaling and gamma correction or brightening too.

Jack Daniel Stanely... =D

It's great to see originality flourishing on the boards. Honestly? Your marketing scheme is intimidating and obviously infectious as I've seen inklings of your thread-style showing up not only in other horror-fest entries, but in movie update threads outside of this category. Flattery at it's best.

Good news on the possibility of scoring HVX(s) for your short. I know I know... it's about story, lighting, yadda... and yadda. Lets face it: it can only help you out as far as the images are concerned. It'll be a treat to see what you do when you migrate over to the HD format.

I do have a question, which you may not be able to answer after this: Your budget counter still reads eighteen (18)... do you still think it's going to sky rocket? =P

Great stuff, man. And thanks for the advice.

Hey Jack, I'd love to read through all 14 pages you've got already, but it's about 2am in the morning & I'm BEAT. But what an AMAZING first post you have. Not only do I look up to your filmmaking abilities, but I'm in awe of your photoshop work and HTML/thread posting abilities. EXTREMELY COOL STUFF.

Without even looking at the other threads yet (I've not even looked at Horror Fest yet - may be my first contest to sit out), I'd be surprised if anyone elses can even rival the pro level you're putting out with this.

Nice work so far!

This picture is awesome! Mark Magic was grand. Make-up or Computer FX?

Hey Matt, as you can by the tele-collaboration (Brooklyn / L.A.) it was all magic from Mark's excellent computer skillz .

I think maybe some of that stuff is mapped from real crime photos and victims though since he was a forensics lawyer and has a tome of that stuff

Mark Johnson
08-26-2006, 03:00 PM
This is a pretty simple effect.

As Jack noted, I have a background in catastrophic injury cases and my current company does forensic analysis and animation. Over time I've accumulated a lot of material pertaining to trauma and I've had access to numerous morgues and anatomy labs.

The best way to do an effect like this is to use a 3D model positioned and lit roughly similar to the model in the photo. Then you merely need to project your wound or grime onto the model from the proper perspective. For instance, let's say I have a photo of a knife wound taken head-on. I project that knife wound onto the 3D head straight on but I take a "snapshot" of a new image of the same projected wound from the angle of Jack's photo (below and oblique). This puts the wound in perspective properly.

As Jack notes, when you add motion things get a bit more dicey. However, by tracking the shot and judiciously using markers, we should be able to replace major portions of our actor/actress with gore that spatially moves with the camera. That's the idea, anyway. A lot of this is cooked up in the head and not based on practical experience. Most of my work involves vehicles and explosions with only occasional gunshot wounds thrown in.

MARK is actually flying up from L.A. with his kit and caboodle, and what that means is that, while I won't be shooting on Red # 1 ...

We will be shooting HVX with m2 and follow focus with some sweet fast primes - 35mm 1.4, a 50mm 1.4, and an 85mm 1.8

Just curious where you did your casting? Did you post casting notices somewhere? I'm in New York too and putting together a project now. Just wondering. Thanks.

Hey Noah.

Amy premiered a lead role in my first play 6 years ago, so we go back.
Jason - I saw in a play with Amy in June.

I wrote the parts for both of them. I usually work that way. I'll start thinking about a certain actor I know and start getting some story ideas and images that include them and then I will gauge their interest and based on their response (it's always been yes so far) I start actually writing the thing.

So in this case since I knew Amy I asked her and then I began writing, but finished the script and offered the part to Jason before I had ever met him, even thought the part was written for him after seeing him onstage.

Shakira was found via craig's list. She's also the only paid actor. The reason I went this route is because the description of the character was very specific so I needed to cast a wider net to find someone and it's paid because its an intense and demanding role that requires ... well I can't tell you what it requires without giving too much away, but this "requirement" suggested that she be paid for a number of reasons :)

So that probably doesn't help you much. The two things I always tell people are go to plays and meet actors that you like. They will be flattered and if you can convince them that you know what you are doing at all, it will be very hard for them to pass up a role written expressly for them. The other thing I always suggest is volunteer to tape an On Camera Acting class one night a week. There will likely be at least someone and more likely than not, multiple someones in the class that impress you and you will be able to develop a relationship with them over the course of weeks and get excited about working together.

If you want to send me a breakdown for a couple of roles, I will gladly put you in touch with actors that I know that are right for the parts and you can invite them to call backs or for a screentest.

Mark Harris

Yeah, I second this. See plays. Meet actors. I work with actors I know and like over and over again. And I write for them as well.

In addition, my horror fest was cast, because my friend Nina is a grad student at SLC, so she hand-picked the best new undergrads there to audition for me. Turned out great. I knew going in that they all could act. So you might also look at colleges if your requirements are young actors. They are often very eager to work, and can really impress you.

G'luck thanks man ... so much to do ... might need to borrow a thing or two.

Finished DRAFT 19 of script last night which was a big revision
and DRAFT 20 tonight which was small stuff.

Didn't feel like it quite gelled until #19.
Yes 19 substantial drafts on what is now a 5 and a 1/4 page script, lol.

But we are behind on storyboards and scheduling and shotlists and whatnot as a result of not locking the script down and the wedding, computer crash, etc.
... whew ...
6 AM and it's time to go to bed !

Sorry man, 6 minutes was not long enough to fit in the neocon bloodsucking vampire lesbian republican transvestite prostitute mormon freedom-fighter fascist alien demon missing-link man trapped in the body of a lovable spaniel from poughkeepsie with a heart of gold's character arc all in. :(

But you still have your career behind the camera. :)

JDS, only 19 drafts? What a frickin' slacker!

BTW - On page 3, I think her last line of dialogue should say:

"Please, DON'T kill me."

instead of

"Please, don't KILL me."

.... exactly, which is why I'm not farther along on this ...

you are looking at what I started painting tonight on the left, what the place was like when we moved in in March and what Aram and I painted in one corner for the Bone Hand set in April.

how the old "set" looked on camera:
http://frenchquarterfeatures.com/ReKindled/boneset.gif http://frenchquarterfeatures.com/ReKindled/boneset2.gif

Ah ... memories ...

so this is basically just a post showing how I'm jacking up my apartment for these things, and a teaser of the pallet for Rekindled ...

Some shots of the basement coming in a few minutes ... (much scarier)

heh heh 8 hours 11:00 ... and he's gotta help me finish.

These are of the raw location, set still has to be dressed (or I wouldn't be posting the pic).
So far we just cleared some stuff out of the way and moved this table in place ... check out the creepy orbs though ... maybe this place is haunted!

and because this post rolled over to a new page, here's the other set BtS for the apartment location, again, showing the paint job from Bone Hand which is about to be history...

Where do you find these trippy locations Jack? Do you just knock on doors and ask if they have a spooky attic, basement, or what? HOW DO YOU DO IT? :-)
