View Full Version : How does spanning work? And how to record to AVI with FireStore?

1. How does spanning work under Edius Broadcast? I know it is supported, but I don't know how

2. Is it possible to record to the FireStore in the same AVI format that Edius Broadcast records to while doing direct to notebook recording? Because those AVI files are excellent for quick and dirty work.

3. I have not yet been able to use the "P2 Select" function with the FireStore, but I did set every setting to what Ewan from Focus Info said.

4. How does the audio in MXF work? I know that there you have the video track, and there the four audio tracks, but to which audio track(s) does the external mono microphone record to? I have the AG MC100G.

1. Spanning as in recording that go across multiple cards? The P2 Select import tool will grab all the necessary footage on import. On export, there's an option to span to the next available card. You will need multiple card slots in either case - it needs simultaneous access to all volumes.

2. Microsoft DV should work.

3. It should work if FireStore is being mounted as a drive, and it contains all the metadata. The latter is what I'm not sure of. If the FireStore doesn't contain the entire P2 filestructure that would appear on a P2 card, P2 Select won't like it.

4. This one, I don' t know...

No, it was more about the 2 GB file limit of the FireStore. For example, if I record ten minutes in one piece, then I have 25 files: (1 x video track, 4 x audio tracks) x 5, as the file limit does make a break every 2 Gigabytes. So spanning would not be the worst idea, to only see 5 (1+4) files when editing...

2. Microsoft DV should work.

I was not precise enough, I was talking about HD recording. And there, you can only chose between Raw DV and P2. Canopus ProCoder can read Raw DV, but the output is distorted, even though both source and target are set to 16:9.

It records to whatever channel you tell it to record to. You choose this by which XLR port you plug it into, and what the audio input switches are set at (INT L/INT R/CH1/CH2). So the external mic could be on any of the four channels depending on how you have the ports and switches configured.

Thank you. I assumed it is like this, but I'm still reading your book. :)

Ahh, I see... I didn't know about the 2GB limit on the FireStore. Interesting...

As long as the MXF properly references all the pieces in P2 recording mode, then it should be okay.
