What look is that? No seriously, I'm curious. :)

A more "earthy" look. I wanted the "earthy" darker feel to this set.

UPDATE:

Not a lot new to report. Just finishing last minute tweaks and such. Hoping to get the final cut to our composer/sound designer Matt Derr by next Tuesday or Wednesday. I am planning on shooting a section on the sound work and composing work he does as well... and I'll also start acquiring cast and crew interviews as he's working on the film. Still shooting for an October 1st finish date, and then we'll be looking for a distributor for the film.

(I also updated the first page of the thread with all the new CG stuff, and a screenshot, to kind of round it out)

He just had a product that Quinn wanted to help out with.

S'good to know that you can put together something you really believe in and have others follow you, regardless of budget, regardless of credits, regardless of hype.

It's also good to see someone younger than myself (but still in the same age group! Grrr... ) going forward with what they really want to do.

Thanks for the comment Kholi! I really respect you a lot, and thank you for the kind words... as well as PTO, thanks for the kind words...

and for the three star rating, I don't know... I think some clowns (no pun intended Kholi, lol) came in and were giving the thread low low rating for some reason... whatever... it's the content that counts, not the thread rating... thanks all! :)

Brandon, I've probabaly missed it in the 31 pages, but what are you plans for this with regards to sales? Looking for a distributor, or will you self distribute & make it available for purchase? Any ideas on what your pricerange would be for the DVD, etc? I'd look forward to getting a copy, once it's all done & available.

Hey Norm! Thanks for asking. We are currently in contact with several Christian distribution companies. We will be sending the film to them once it is done, and we're hoping it is picked up. We also have some other contacts in the secular market that we'll be approaching. Obviously we will push forward and self-distribute it if things fall through on the outside distributor approach. I am thinking the DVD price point will be $15-$20 as it is nearly feature length and will have some pretty in depth special features as well. All this is very preliminary of course, but that's where we're at now. Thanks for the question!

Daniel Skubal
08-27-2006, 08:48 AM
As per request of Brandon:

A couple weeks ago, Brandon asked me to design a logo for his production company "Noa/Rice Digital". Brandon didn't really have a specific direction he wanted to go aside from something progressive and epic... I didn't really know what to do, so I just began working. I started modeling a Greek-type monument in Wings3D, which I then imported into Maya and put in the camera motion.

Here's what the project looked like:
http://www.mooseheadfilms.com/3dNoalRice.jpg

After I rendered out the camera motion, I imported the file into After effects, where I inserted the sky background and the Noa/Rice Digital text.

The camera spins around the monument once, and slowly pulls out from it as the text and sky fade in. You should be able to see a version of it in the new trailer Brandon's putting up in the next few days...
but here's the ending image:

http://www.mooseheadfilms.com/NoariceIntro.jpg

Overall, I was pretty happy with it. I'm still learning my way around Maya, so I ran into a few issues, but I walked away with quite a bit from this project.

Jack Daniel Stanley
08-29-2006, 11:01 AM
Cool.

Couple of suggestions if you don't mind.

The taglines ... IMHO you should cut the 1st half of each.

So rather than
"he's a professional, totally devoted to his mission"

and

"she's and idealist, totally devoted to her faith"

just

"He's a totally devoted to his mission"

"She's totally devoted to her faith"

or

"He's a totally devoted to his mission"

"She's dedicated to her faith"

or

"He's a totally devoted to his mission"

"She's completely dedicated to her faith"

The later are punchier and more memorable, IMHO.
And, Mission immplies professional and being devoted too Faith implies idealist, so the first halves of the sentences are redundant.

IMHO :)

Greggl
08-29-2006, 11:45 AM
I'm interested to see how distributors react. You've got a Christian
themed film, thats got some pretty gratuitous gun violence in the
trailer... I'd think that'd make your sell a lot harder.

Who's the trailer targeted for?

Brandon Rice
08-29-2006, 12:24 PM
Trailer's targeted for everyone. You'd be surprised by the amount of violence that Christian people will watch/stand. And in the actual film, we only have 5 gun shots total. It's not really gratuitous violence. We also never uphold or promote the violence... it's simply part of the story. What we wanted to do with Smuggler's is to make a film that has strong Christian elements but is perfectly integrated with the story. It's about a bible smuggler in communist Soviet Union, how would you ignore the Christian element? In my experience with "Christian movies" I've seen them FORCE the Christian element into their stories, and it feels unnatural and cheesy... that's what we tried to avoid here.

KOVAROVA

You'd be surprised by the amount of violence that Christian people will watch/stand.

strange.. i dont understand why.

Brandon Rice
08-29-2006, 12:30 PM
honestly... I'm a strong Christian myself... and if violence is done for justice I really love it actually... at the same time seeing torturing of people for no reason is disturbing to me... but sometimes necessary to put a point across IMO... But let's not turn this into a violence debate please :) Thanks.

Congrats on the film, B-man...

How'd you pull off that slow creep in when she's kneeling beside the bed... Dolly?

Thanks!

Yes, we used a "dolly" which consisted of me with the Spiderbrace sitting in a wheelchair and someone pushing me... We used the "dolly" sparingly as it was tough to make smooth... but it worked out for us, and we have about 5 or 6 real good dolly shots in the film.

Hey man, as I said before, I definately like the new trailer. I think it looks very professional and makes me want to wathc the movie. Congrats on what looks like a really great project!

The new trailer is like 20 million times better than the old one. My only two concerns would be first, the line, " Why are you so afraid of me bringing bibles into this country?" or something similar. It sort of seems redundant as they already talk about the bibles.

I could be wrong though. These scenes are out of context.

My second concern is the CG shot. It sort of comes out of nowhere. Perhaps if we knew what it was searching for? or saw someone hiding and the light passing over them? I don't know what it goes with. but all in all it looks really good.

I GIVE YOU TWO THUMBS UP

I somehow happened on it by searching for 'new posts.' I'll let you know if I see anything else cool come up in the future. Honestly, it was really cool, but they only talked about Media Composer and some of the new features like DNxHD 36 for HD stuff and the Adreneline. They talked about HD workflow exclusively (P2 and XDCAM HD), but it was COOL being around all those people that take this business as serious and are professional as them... :)

Well, I just watched the new trailer and I have to say  . . . great job!

I did have one thought while watching this and I'll share it now, but understand that I don't know anything about putting trailers together. This is just a thought that came to mind while watching. :)

Anyway, regarding the part when you show the girl sitting on the bed and we hear the voiceover saying, "...daughter is being detained somewhere in Romania" then you cut to the scene where that voice over comes from and he goes on to talk about bible smuggling, etc. Then it cuts to Bill climbing in the window and the "cavalry" line, then the "you really don't know do you...".

What if you did it like this instead... still show her sitting on the bed with the voice over. Then cut to Bill climing in the window and the cavalry line. Then cut the next scene so Bill only says, "You really don't know do you? They want your father back" (cutting the "bible smuggling" line). Then after her "Why are you so afraid of the Bible's I brought into this country?" then continue to the next couple warehouse scenes (as it is now) and then cut to the shot of the French contact sitting on the bench next to Bill and saying his line, "Bibles? (chuckle)".

I don't know if that works or not...but it was just a thought that occurred to me. Thought I'd share it. Remember take it with a pound of salt cause I really don't know much about putting trailers together :)

If you leave it as is, it works very well and I think you did a fantastic job on it.

Peace,
Larry

Hey Larry! Thanks for watching... I read your idea, and I think it might be a bit confusing... I don't want to lose the setup that she's in Romania, smuggling bibles. And, I really like the interchange between Carmen and Bill in that scene... But, thanks for the suggestion! And you know I always want them! Thanks dude!

bman - The new trailer looks great. Much better. But I have a hard time understanding what his last line is. "I don't know what she's praying for, but I [mumble] what she's getting." It's probably suppose to be "but I know what she's getting." The first few times I heard it I thought he was saying "but I don't know what she's getting." Which doesn't make sense. Any chance he can ADR that line because it's a great line?

Brandon Rice
08-30-2006, 10:36 AM
Thanks PK! The line is "But I'm what she's getting" And I can probably bump the audio up a bit there, because I LOVE his read... the mumbleness is a thing he did throughout the movie, and it really helps his character a lot. I'll work on pumping the audio up for that last bit though :) thanks!

Shaun Patrick
08-30-2006, 11:12 AM
Why do you jump the line in the beginning of the trailer? I know you previously had mentioned that it was intentional but maybe you can expound on why you deliberately jumped the line. Watching it again, it's disorienting and just reads as a mistake.

Brandon Rice
08-30-2006, 11:16 AM
I did it because I liked the way the shots worked together :) I don't find it disorienting... maybe in the full cut it won't be so sudden.

big improvement. brandon, you are a fast learner, very strong at absorbing input and adept at making best use of the strong resources around you.

one thought on the "i'm what she's getting" line. while I like the profile shot better, I think an mcu where we can see his lips moving (if you've got it) might help more than bumping up the audio.

looking forward to this and future efforts. thanks for sharing your process.

Brandon Rice

do you jump the line in the full cut?

Yes sir. The entire scene is from those angles... then there's movement to the back of the room.

You may not find it disorienting but as someone who has not seen the full cut, I'm telling you that it is disorienting. I guess I'm playing devil's advocate here, man. You made a choice--I'm just asking for a defense of the choice beyond, "I don't find it disorienting." This is what constructive feedback is all about.

okiedokie... here goes... The framing on the other side of the shot was very uninteresting and didn't look very good... now, I could cheat stuff, I realize that, but I still did not like the framing at that side, and went with what I thought looked better. That's basically it :) Next time I may reconsider as it's been a problem to your eye.

ShaunPatrick: Seriously. Why worry about crossing the line when you have a helicopter? Who is going to notice the basics when THERE'S A HELICOPTER? Don't be so pretentious. Film school can't teach you everything. If it looks awesome, it is awesome, or possibly rad. You can learn a lot from watching movies over and over and learning from the parts that kicked butt.

Example. Die Hard with a Vengence. Question. Why was that movie good? Answer. Helicopter. Buy the DVD, and you'll see, they had another ending, without a helicopter. Rocket launcher, yes, but no helicopter. It didn't work. They reshot it, and they inserted TWO helicopters -- suddenly, you had one of the best movies ever made.

You need to learn these two rules of cinema:

(1) Helicopters Make the Movie
(2) If Rule 1 is followed, ignore all other rules.

Ouch, that looks like it had to be hand cut. Didn't key out well? Meaning, it's a good effect, but if you look closely at the still (which no one will do when it's in motion), you can see that it was cut vs. just keyed out.

In hindsight, we probably should have done that with one of our keyes that was giving us trouble.

Oh, and thanks Larry, glad you liked it! The main reason I didn't want to be on camera is because it was 2am, and I was irritated with everything. It was a LONG shoot, and a tough one for me, as I REALLY made up my angles and shots on the fly, which is extremely trying.

Do you have a "force reload" on safari? It may just need to re-fetch the page from the server (sometimes it pulls the one from cache without seeing if the site is updated).

On Windows I can do it with (Ctrl+F5)...unfortunately I don't know what the command is on Mac.

Hope that helps,
Larry

edited to add: I just did some quick searching and found that Safari has an issue with clearing cache when it is supposed to. In fact, it appears to ignore the header requests from the server that would tell it to clear. One response I read somewhere suggested the following to clear the cache (cmd-option-e), but I don't own a Mac so I can't confirm it.

Just wanted to mention. I think the backround in that keyed out shot should be even more out of focus. But I'm stupid because I can't see it in motion.

LOL! Those quotes made me laugh, haha!

Anyway, the reason we didn't film it live is because we had to travel around to find spots that looked like Eastern Europe (or close to looking like it) and we didn't want to have to have the actors and stuff have to go to those places... That's the main reason... and... if we see a modern car in the shot, it kills it (as this is supposed to take place in the 80's)

Wew- 400+ posts and counting. Usually I like to read what has been said before I post- so that I don't repeat to much- but as I've got to take off shortly, I don't have the time to read through them all. So forgive me if I'm repeat postings.

Nice job on the casting of actors- you've got some great faces in there. I like your site as well- nice touch in adding the banner above the photos in the autoviewer. (I'm looking forward to seeing the BTS stuff, when I have more time.) The VFX are great from what I've seen so far, I'm sure that you are feeling pretty good with how your project is coming along- which you should. It looks like you have put a lot of work into it.

The score for the trailer is great as well. Although I think that the trailer could be tightened up some. I think you've hit the right story points.

This is the establishing shot for Lubenkoff's apartment (also in Romania) as you can see it is much less attractive and more trashy. Which is the image we were looking for, as a contrast to the place Carmen's being held.

Ok. Just wondering.

For me, it feels like South-West architecture, adobe, spanish tile roof etc... Is it just the square windows, or was there another reason you chose that building ? Clearances et al...

When you are trying to sell the production design, an establishing shot is one of the tools in the low budget filmmakers tool box. You know, grabbing an establishing shot of a bulding you never could afford to film in, then cut to your own interior.:) I know (in school), I bluffed my way onto properties and shot establishing shots (without making the building too recognizable) for that very reason.

Anywhoo, looks like your projects coming along nicely.
I've seen some cool stuff in Smugglers Ransom.

You have a good point in the Spanish tile thought... I never thought of that... You are right about establishing shots being important. We've got great ones for everything I think (though a little uncertain about the Carmen one now). Any ideas?

I'd be ecstatic if someone had a particular exterior they think might fit the bill better and they could go shoot a few seconds for the film. Please let me know, thanks.

D_and_G was definitely right about the southwest architecture. You might check with the local film commission to get some ideas for exterior establishing shots. But I've got to say that that building would never sell me on the location.

All right, two nays... I am reconsidering the choice now. Good call. Any ideas? I have searched LA, and this was the best building I found.

It does look a bit to modern. Why don't you take a high-res pic off the internet and keyframe it to see how it looks? It might end up awful, but it's worth a try.

Good idea... I am open for anyone to shoot some stuff they might find more the feel I am going for as well... I would give you full credit for 2nd Unit DP. Please let me know. Thanks!

Here are three high resolution pictures that I found on Google Images that you might be able to use for the exterior. All you have to do is keyframe a zoom or movement, add some noise (or create a particle effect) to make it look more like moving video, and maybe some color correction. It's worth a try.

Broken Down Apartment in Romania:

In-Progress Build in Romania:

(I promise the image is bigger than this, right click and download)

Hopefully those will work. If they don't, you can always use your original footage.

Because I wanted to see if it could be done, I decided to work on making those images look like video. I'll send them to you when I'm done or upload them here if you want.

EDIT:
It's really hard to make the images look like video. I'm getting major interlacing problems for some reason when I keyframe. It's thirty after twelve here, I'm goin to bed. Check back in tomorrow.

Knowing since i work with images and copyright stuff alot, you would definatly need permission from the original person who took those photos, or if they were sold , then whoever now owns them. It could be very difficult to track them down. Looking through a stock data base would be best, but we have paid up to 250+ for single photos and a CD of photos around 600+ , and weve got 10,000's of photos. LOL

Yeah, safe bet not to use em' I'd much rather get a shooter in another city somewhere that has more appropriate architecture... seeing as how I can't actually go to Romania myself and shoot stuff. haha.

Hey thanks for the efforts my friend. One other little thing, other than the copywrite issue as mentioned by Cynic and Malcolm is that the pics you have here are of some real drab buildings. While that works for Lubenkoff's apartment, it doesn't entirely work for Carmen's holding facility, as she is a VIP prisoner and is given very good treatment. Just a little note on that. Thanks again for the efforts!

Hey Brandon,
My dvx is off at the shop for a head cleaning and won't be back to me till next week. but if you need some exterior shots of some romanian looking buildings i might have something in mind nearby here. how soon do you need the shot?

Also, on a public note to everyone. I live in a small town in northern germany just north of düsseldorf and I am moving to tver, russia(just 2 hours north of moscow) in november. so if anyone needs some pretty sweet stock footage of anything related to those areas. just hit me up and ill see what i can do. :)

Hey man! It doesn't have to be too soon at all... I am still in post and will be for awhile.. I'd love to see what you can get... some static wides/tights and some pans would be great!

Well, looks like Weston got some promising footage for establishing shots, and we'll be waiting on Stephen as well! Thanks guys!

Not too many new updates. A brand new episode of Director's Diaries will be released tomorrow night. It will be for the final day of principal photography. We do have some special Director's Diaries coming up though, so never fear! :)

Also, we begin working on the score tomorrow, and locking the title effect shot as well.

Over the next several weeks I'll be planning cast and crew interviews also. Stay tuned! :)

Thanks for the heads up on that, Cryogenic. Looks like that went out yesterday after I sent a PM out to a bunch of folks for an update on my thread.

Jarred's working on something now to address the advertising of films thing, which I think is fair. My situation's a little different than Brandon's and some others, as mine is already available for sale, vs. his & others there's still progress to see, etc. so there's some 'educational value' so-to-speak for members. At least IMO.

EDIT: Looks like I was a little slow to type! LOL. Thanks Jarred.

Yes, and now back to SMUGGLER'S RANSOM.

hahaha! Yeah, it was a pretty funny one, glad ya liked it!

You know, I have no idea if that's the take we used in the final cut. And obviously it was more of a combination of several shots. The scene is only about 50 sec. in the film, but because I love having lots of angles on action stuff, it took about an hour and a half to shoot.

Just watched the NEW trailer, VERY nice! It has Blockbuster written all over it, nice job! The helicopter looks REAL, that's awesome!

For another update/request. I am in need of some better shots of a plane landing at a large airport. The shots I got aren't that great, as we kinda got stopped by the airport police (a DVX on a spiderbrace kinda looks like a rocket launcher) anyway, let me know. Thanks!

Hmmm.....what type of planes. The mansfield lahm airport is not too far from me....its all national guard though. They mostly fly big C130 type carrier planes. Other than that its small private jets. No commercial aircraft.
