After browsing here and much research i have decided on a SLR instead of a p&s. I want the D50 (my first still cam ever) would you get the 50mm 1.8 over the kit lens as your first lens? i really know nothing aout mm distances etc escept that 50-55 is considered normal anything below is wide and above is tele. but ive like the photos i have seen with this lens (portraits s,still life, nature etc) and i t seems like a bargain?

would anyone consider buying a refurbished D50? ive read some things that warn they may have high shutter operation but i dont see why nikon would refurb and leave a mechanically failing shutter in there?

thanks for any info

I have the 18-55mm kit lens and I also have a Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens.

However, the lens I use the most is my Nikon 85mm 1.8.

If I were you and could only pick one lens, I would start with the kit lens as it will give you the most flexibility.

Get the kit lens if you can only get one to start. The 1.8 is great to add from there, especially since it's only $100.

Maybe(?) a little late, but I'd suggest you skip the kit lens and go with the 50. You'll learn to see better. Get a zoom later.
