i have no idea about techy stuff with computers and im having trouble picking a laptop to run edius broadcast for when i buy both in a weeks time.

i was thinking of going for an AlienwareMJ-12 m7700a

http://www.alienware.co.uk/Configurator_Pages/mj-12m_7700a.aspx?SysCode=PC-EU-LT-MJ12-M7700A&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

this has an AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-60 Processor with HyperTransport and Dual Core Technology it pumps at 2.6 gig but it says on the EDIUS website for system requirements:Intel® Pentium® 4 3.0GHz CPU or faster Intel Xeon® 2.8GHz dual processors recommended for HD/HDV editing, Hyper-Threading supported ,

so what do you peeps think? am i gona have to look elseware or does the Alienware fit the bill with HDV editing on EDIUS? ( bear in mind ill be choosing all the upgrade options, 2gig ram etc.. for it to run as best it can)

The new Core 2 Duo processor is garnering astoundingly positive reviews, and should be released within about two weeks' time. Way faster than the existing processors, and with EDIUS you'd want the fastest processor you can afford, so you may want to wait an extra week if possible to see what gets released.

cheers guys, i will probly have to wait a week or two anyway im still hanging around for my bank to sort themselves out with my card... long story, i had a look round but couldnt find anything other than Alienware that came close to handling HD apart from the macs, anywhere like dixons and PC world only sell domestic machines, i dont really know any other websites that sell decent laptops. Barry do you know of anywhere that processor will be availible for custom built laptops any particular manufacturer?

No, but I'm expecting it will show up in new Macbook Pros and Dells and such almost immediately.

In the end it really depends on how much realtime performance you're expecting from the system.

Beyond realtime playback performance, encoding speed, etc - the one thing that [i]is[i] dependent on having a fast system is the realtime capture and transcode from HDV to Canopus HQ. Since you're HVX folks, that probably doesn't play as large a part into the equation. Also, even if you can't do a realtime transcode from HDV to Canopus HQ, you can still capture native HDV then convert from the EDIUS timeline or ProCoder Express for EDIUS.

Hi. I was just loking at the Canopus thread and saw your query.
Ok, I'm Avid at the moment (But may change) I run a Dell 9400 dual core 2.16 ghz, 2 g ram nvidia 7800go graphics, and edit in hdv with no troublle at all, even transcoded to DNxHD 120 TR. It will even play 25 mb/s D Theatre mpeg at full 1920x1080p on the screen.

I am on the verge of getting a HVX. Running Vegas looking to jump ship to Edius. I have a 3.2Ghtz P4 laptop with 256MB video card, 2 gigs RAM, ETc. I am a hair over the mnimum specs, will this at least run efficently? i read above, that its about reatime, and i dont care about that, i just wanna be able to cut DVCpro50 and 720P. Ya'lll think it will handle this?

Also how is the color correction suite in Edius up t par wit hVegas or FCP?

video card doesn't matter when it comes to editing on Edius, at least as far as I know. Edius doesn't take advantage them. Fast Processor, Ram, and storage. Dell has a *intel core 2 duo laptop. Haven't looked at prices, but I am sure you will probably get more for the price of an alienware.
