Been lurking here for a while, building myself up for a new camera and the switch to HD.. oh the excitement. Desperately want the HVX200, budget says no, but wait ! Google search reveals several 200's in my budget! Off to a world of unreal fictions, greymarket goods, empty promises, extravagent bundled accessories and just plain crooks. Exhaustedly return to lick my wounds - but wait ! User post of a craigslist ad in SF - I can drive all night and have tomorrow! Still gullible, takes several days and several emails to face the reality of just another scam. Finally bite the mental bullet - real deal demands a reputable dealer and a reputable price. Amazingly few players in this park.
Peruse the websites, Abel Cine has the Sony FX1 on clearance! Bite the bullet, call L.A. Nope, oh it's the internet - that's all NY - have to do online. Hit the site, place the order. Wait for shipping confirmation . . . . . day of silence. Phone rings. It's Abel Cine - the computer lied! They don't have one to ship . do have a Z1U or A1U . . . they'll call me back. On no - not another bait & switch . . . hang on, this is where it gets good.
They did call back. Their head of internet sales. Claimed to have tried hard to find me a FX1, not to be had. (Strangely, I believe him), Would I be willing to accept their floor demonstrator model.. never rented, less than 2 hours on the heads, no box but full warranty and all accessories, plus some other goodies thrown in, at a substantial discount, overnight shipping, and with their deepest apologies??? After checking that I was indeed in the same reality, I accepted their offer, received everything the next morning, am very very happy and a Abel Cine customer for life. And yes, Virginia, there are still a (very damn) few honest dealers in the video world.
Compaq computer once abused me on a laptop deal. I enjoyed keeping score while getting even over the next several years, eventually costing them well over $1M in sales. I'm hoping to have the opportunity to reward Abel Cine with a million in sales - they deserve it.
