You can showcase storyboards, script segments, final score's or in progress, production still's, audition's, headshot's, behind the scene's video and making of specials, art-work and conceptual design, set dressing, location's and even One Sheet's (the Film's poster) but one thing you cannot do:

NO FOOTAGE FROM ACTUAL FILM CAN BE SHOWN UNTIL THE OFFICIAL FESTIVAL START.

Hey that still looks great too!

Posted another still.
...then sit on it for a while and see if we want to change anything.
word.

always a good strategy, but one I never have time for :(

In the Walter Murch book, he talks about how its good for directors to get away from the film before editing so your judgement as to what's in the can isn't clouded by what happened on the shooting day ... what you thought looked good then, so you can forget what was shot under tense circumstances or hurried, or what you were in a really good mood for while you shot, etc. and just see what wound up in the can for what it is.

I'm getting pretty psyched to see this one.

Grabs look great and it sounds like you are ahead of the curve on shooting/post and have got a great workflow going:thumbsup:

In the CC'd one I upped the conrtast and the saturation. But Maybe I don't push things far enough. Like, in herofest someone told me that my images looked flat and that I should CC them more. But i'm not sure what to do, I do what I think is tasteful and appropriate and when I watch movies they dont crush the blacks to smitherines and color everything wierd colors very often. Also I worry about the contrast stuff when I'm lighting moreso than in post. So i'm a little stumped, maybe you guys can show me what you'd do. Any help is appreciated.

Doesn't look like your actually getting to pure black.
If you had letterbox on your image, your blackest black should be the same as the letter box ...

If you had letterbox on your image, your blackest black should be the same as the letter box ...

Only if there IS a true black in the image otherwise you're going to skew your color and contrast improperly. :)

Jack Daniel Stanley
08-23-2006, 12:52 PM
like I said, black, not dark grey :) :)

butu he's talking about color grading or color timing, not callibrating a monitor ... so "proper" or "improper" are less apropos.

Devil's Rejects looks fantastic ... why? among other things Crushed Blacks and Blown Out whites ... can't get much more contrasty than that, and some shadows were definately crushed down ... I also think it's not a look that hits you over the head so much like a lot of tony scott looks, say.

Conrad when i dropped your images in FCP and did the 3 way auto color corrector, it actually lowered your whites more than anything, though just a little, and dropped the blacks even more slightly depending on the grab.

You don't shoot with your master ped in positive numbers do you?

I think you've got the ballsiest screen grabs of them all, Johnson.

All puns instead.

How was that? Shooting a naked actor and how did your actress react when she had to straddle him?

Looks really bloody mang.

I'll see what I can do. Majorly behind the eightball right now ... but for you ... hey:)

Basically though what I would do is spend weeks obsessing over it, so I don't know that I can turn out something brilliant in the couple of hours I have to spend on this.

What do you want the footage to look like?

One approach is pick a film that you love that has the feel you are going for. Pull some grabs from that and then work until you get that look.

I used my friends so they didn't mind. If I would have used actors, they probably would have complained and got embarrased, at least that's what has happend to me in the past. That's why I just use my friends now.

...but horror movies need to have naked women, guys only if its a funny situation.
-sam
sbt7000@hotmail.com
interesting ... seems you're are OK with the nudity in lighter situation, which probably means it's more gratuitous.

Countries gone the other way ... we won't tolerate breastesses flopping out on the run from a killer or a gratuitous chase through the girls locker room. We will tolerate nudity in a sex scene and in more intense dramatic situations.

seems you are not against the nudy kazoodyness but just mixing the nudity and violence? or does it just make you uncomfortable? if so then conrad is probably onto something as the horror genre is often about confronting taboos.

Curious to hear your response, thanks.

Jack

JDS>

If nudity in a horror movie is going to be used in a matter that's NOT humurous, then I would agree mixing it with violence would be most effective. And that effect (for me)is a disturbing, uneasy feeling. I think its possible to achieve that level of uneasiness WITHOUT violence+nudity, or torture/rape (I think the two combos are synonomous). I'd rather see a movie without the torture and rape, I've never had any personal encounters, I just don't like it. A splatter-fest movie, or startling, grossout, creepout-type of movie is more entertaining. And that's what it's all about, entertainment.

Is this anything like the entry, "Urine Trouble?"

Jeff Bailey did the score. I don't know if he has a website, but a google search uncovered his bio here: http://www.tcjazzworkshop.com/facultybios.html

Eli Stone wrote and performed the song that will be appearing in the opening sequence. I believe it is posted earlier in this thread.

Strong opening, the music fit awesomely. The lighting was good, the mood was great.

Unfortunately I felt a bit let down by the rest of the movie after such an intense opening....it was kind of like you blew your load way too early.

Also, your actress needed some work with some stuff....

[Spoilers]

Like when she's slamming the head of the dude in between the door and the doorframe....it really looks like she's giving him a gentle tap, yet there is blood all over her and stuff. Stick a water melon in there next time and and have her hit with intent to break it, or something. ;)

Also, I had the same problem with the axe scene. Didn't look like she was chopping anything.

I LIKED THIS MOVIE!!!

I hear what virum is saying above but I thought that it played right into her "weird little habit." She seems to be so nonchalant about her crimes.

Great opening. Great opening song. I though that the camera work was really nice. Nice shots and edits. Lighting was strong, too.

And the actors did a great job. Especially that last guy. Very natural. And so HANDSOME!!!

Funny. I didn't realize that Lingothree was part of this production.

Great job!!!

And I, too, love the little pitter-patter of those stocking feet at the end!

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

Hey peoples. Didn't know Lingo was behind this. What parts, if I missed it.

Script - I got confused. I'm beginning to think that I'm really stupid now. But I couldn't understand where the story was taking me. It started out with a hardcore sensual pre-murder scene, then went into something completely different. And then the ending told me it was all a dream, but she's still a murderer and ... oh the boyfriend's next! I can't say where exactly it falls short, I might have to re-watch a few more times. By the way- I do think I get it partially: She's relapsing having killed these people already, haunting dreams. I just don't know if it was sold the right way.

Direction - Nice frame-ups. The coverage worked well in a lot of scenes. Some fell apart, like the portions where she ran away. A good framing example would be her swinging the Axe down. The angle wasn't too low or too high, just about spot on.

Acting - It almost seemed like they were all playing tag or hide-and-go-seek. Especially when she gets the knife and starts poking at whom I will refer to as BONDAGE ZOMBIE. The shoestrings around his face and all, I bet those left marks. Seems our leading lady is good with phone conversations, though.

Cine/Lighting - Shot composition was okay, but what stood out the most was creative choice of lighting. In the beginning when she's standing in the doorway you can see rim lighting going on. (Edge? I always get those two confused.) And, going back to the Axe scene, she's well lit there too. Looked like a horror movie to me. I also like the rich colors in the shower scene, though it made the blood look too Kool-Aid at that part. Great lighting here.

Editing - The beginning was cut too quickly, perhaps. I wanted to see more of her standing in the door, establish that she was some sinister Girl Next Door before she came in and started her on-the-naked-body lap-dance/tease. I also think that the scene where BONDAGE ZOMBIE climbed over-top the girl next door played out too long. This is another reaon I say the actors seemed like they were playing a game of tag within the movie. I almost expected him to say "HA! I SCARED YOU!" through the shoe string mask. Otherwise, it's fine. A little tinkering.

Sound - This might be due to time constraints, but I noticed scattered choices of folley. Door shutting sounds, opening sounds, but no naked footsteps. Liked the Ambient horror score. Said it like three times in a few different threads, but I'm a fan of that style of score over strings and pianos. Just my preference as of late.

Special Effects - Plenty o'blood here. I have to go back to the head-in-the-door-crack scene. It's a great concept, but maybe gone about in a way that's not as effective as it could've been. Blood splatter on the Axe chops- Neat.

Scariest Moments - When he crawled up to the door. That's actually a funny moment too but if anyone ever crawled like that up to my door I'd be pretty upset.

Overall consensus - Great Visuals, great lighting. An overall visual success. Maybe a little recutting and sound sweetening in the final? Otherwise, I watched the entire thing without wondering when it was going to end. Great job everyone. Thanks for showcasing!

I lied. I wasn't responsible for all the good parts.

This was Joe's baby. He wrote the screenplay, and I went in and messed around with some dialogue when he was done. I assisted with directing, but he's the one who really had the vision and pulled it all together.

Since Joe's already gone to bed, I'll see if I can respond to your Q's about story. Joe, feel free to tell me to edit or dump this in the morning when you wake up if I got it all wrong...

Here's the way I look at the story. The viewer is led to believe that this is just your typical horror flick: house with a gruesome past, a young attractive male trying to scare a young attractive female with ghost stories, young attractive female runs around in her skivvies trying to escape the monsters, kills them all, gets herself to a safe place then engages in the requisite shower scene, then oops, she's not safe after all, then phew...it was all just a dream. At this point, the viewer is to groan "oh dear god, a "it was just a dream" cliche - what a cop out..." Only in this case, it wasn't all a dream. Our young attractive female has contributed to the gruesome history of her house, the evil man-hater that she is, she reflects upon herself in the bed, then kills her unsuspecting boyfriend. So that's how I read it.

And dominatrix killer #2 crawling up to the door? Definitely funny. Look at the first part of Joe's thread for an amusing BTS of the actor.

Ok really nice work here!

Great lighting and editing, Nikki you rock!

The dead guys crawling up on her were SICK, DISTURBING, SILENT HILL-ish and WOW!

A few objections though:
- when she whacks one the sound could be more realistic
- when she hits that dead guy's head she has a lot of blood splattered on her and I dont know if its realistic but since you did that, then in the axe scene she should have been drowning in blood after 10 i believe whacks she gave him
- the body afterwards should have been little pieces of meat, but the blood looked NICE!
- when she takes the shower its one of my favourite scenes, very well lit and the right angle but the blood that drips on her back doesnt look that good and its kinda not what you would expect because then we move up and she's pretty clean so you would expect more blood on her head and blood dont wash away that easily
- the story was nice as a basis but not really well delivered...I mean...I tried to put myself into her shoes...and I wouldnt act like that...there are these dead people crawling up on her, she kills one with an axe then she washes the blood off with soap? I would be running out of there and I wouldnt be taking a shower...wouldnt she call the cops? do something with the body? ok its a dream and all but something bothered me in all this

All in all it had perfect setup in terms of lights and camera work but you could use all this and refine the story a bit to make something REALLLYYYYY disturbing.

Oh, and I didnt see the end coming but you could have led me there with a more solid story and it wouldnt be bad.

Great work in the end! Looking for more of you!

This was a lot of fun, really. The cinematography was great. Conrad, you are a really, really great DP. I do think your work is better in Lingothree's film, but it's the difference between AMAZING and SUPER-AMAZING. I guess it's just the choices.

I noticed here...is there a place where you project the shape of two ghosts on the wall, around the fireplace? Looks like it and it's very cool. Even if not intentional, very very cool.

What's outstanding is almost-camp sensibility, very much like Lingothree's. Amidst the horror, it's a lot of fun. I guess it's because you guys work together and just gravitated to similar tastes. Or maybe it's Minnesota...

Anyway, solid work all around. It's soooo great that you guys seem to have a little cabal there in Minn working together. We have something similar in NYC.

Freakin hilarious. Awesome job! So many clever devices.
The dialing scene... of course she dials 7 digits. Should've have made it 11- hell why not long distance. "Get over here!"

The door scene... Never get between a girl and her phone. Blood everywhere! Good stuff.

The washing hands shot.. smiled when she freaked about her shirt.

The bludgeoning scene... loved it. Totally Sissy Borden meets energizer bunny. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to cut it in the middle and then toss in a crossfade to indicate a time lapse- coulda been a very Sam Raimi moment.

Conrad,

You are one of my favorite directors on DVXuser. I thoroughly enjoyed your hero entry, but this one is superior in almost every way. Even though your hero entry had a great story, its look was kind of... run of the mill DVX. This time around it looked like a film.

I could go on and on about how much I love the red headed lead actress. There's just something very special about that young lady. Even in her smallest gestures I feel her communicating with her performance. I loved her in your hero short, but loved her even more here.

Why isn't this thread getting more buzz? It deserves it. You'll get very high marks from me.

Wow!

HOLY CRAP THAT WAS GOOD!!!

Here's how I see it . . .

BEST in female lead actress (damn that girl can ACT!)
BEST in boyfriend acting (small part, but very well-acted)
BEST in directing
BEST in writing
BEST in almost-naked-chick-in-horrorfest-short
BEST in unique, funny, yet still horror-ish approach to horror genre
BEST in cute girl feet shot walking fast and cute to kill someone
BEST in cutting just before the action in the final shot

Loved your lead--loved her, loved her, loved her! Huge kudos to her for stripping down for her art!

Damn, you're good!

This is definitely one of the best films in the fest - it's got everything. The writing, acting, the sound, editing, and cinematography are all top notch. It's one of the only films where every element was done really well.

It's really the only film that pulled me into the world of the character enough that I wasn't scrutinizing every little detail. I feel like you really have a strong command of the genre. You used all of the horror conventions very effectively without making me feel like I've seen this exact movie before.

You have the audience going just far enough in the direction of thinking this is just a typical cookie-cutter horror before you change directions. It's great.

You also managed to make it funny and very scary at the same time, which seems really hard to do. That moment where the pale guy crawls over the girl and you've got that weird sound is thoroughly scary.

Anyways, great work.

Also, do you have a link to There Goes the Neighborhood? I never got to see it. Thanks.

I think this looked great.
And I think there was some really great and original imagery here.
I just have zero idea what was going on.
SPOILER ALERT
I laughed when she called her BF because these things were all over rather than getting the hell out of the house, but then thought that was ok when I learned we were in a dream ... I think ... and then had no idea by the end.

but very creepy and well put together

but what are the spaghetti faced guys?
and who's the bum woman on the bed.

Wait ... are those her victims?

Why's she calling her boyfriend over to protect her

Wait ... is she luring him over to kill him?

OHHHHHH!

But wait I though the string face men were supernatural gouhls or something

I think they were so creepy I thought they were demons, and that's where I got lost.

If they wer demons then of course ot would confuse the idea of her being a killer significantly.
...

I have to watch again now.

Thanks.
This makes me feel good.
I also felt like yours was one of the only that felt like real filmmaking skills went into it.

Acting: Lead was good, wanted her more scared though, just being picky.
Script: Interesting, nice twist. But what happened to the link with the beginning?
Direction: Some really nice ideas going on here, does the Director work on music videos by any chance?
Music: Music was good, not really a fan of ADR.
Editing: A little too fast in places, like the kitchen scene, wanted you to stay longer on some shots. It really settled down further into the piece and flowed.
Lighting: Really solid and bright throughout. Nice look you achieved here.
Loved: The beginning, the crawling guy, the door bashing! The low angle shot when she fell, the fact it was a dream.
Hated: The girls scream, spade musical stabs, also the fact that his head would be all over that floor with that force. :)
Overall: A well rounded piece, I think with a solid script you guys will produce something amazing. Good job.:dankk2:

really liked this film thought it looked good throughout. was creeped out when that dude got on top of her i'm like ewwwwww. I loved the I must strip to my underwear part, cuz horror movies should have the scantly clad IMO (clasic) :) the ending wasn't my cup of tea but hey it's flippin horrorfest :)

This film started off real good. Kind of reminded me of the opening bit of a CSI episode. Well shot and lit.

I'm not the biggest fan of "it was only a dream, or was it?" stories but I guess it worked all right for the genre. The actress seemed a bit too nonchalant. I understand that the twist at the end may explain her odd behavior within the dream, but it's either bland or confusing.

I like this one. I hope you guys continue to make more stuff.

This was interesting. The pre-credits intro was well-done. Music for it fit. The acting during the phone convo with the boyfriend didn't really work for me. I like how she's watching the Christian channel before the attack. Interesting touch.
This seemed to want to be more of a comedy. I wish it tilted more in that direction and went all the way.

Story was kinda simple. I think the ending could have been a bit more clever.

Good show.

I liked it. The only thing that was kinda funny though was how the actress seemed to move her neck in a wobbly unstable way. especially when she runs. That made me laughed. But all in all I liked it.

Good Luck:thumbup:

Yeah, we have been calling her the bobble head girl. "You know, the one with the bobble head"
If I haven't said it before, I really loved the lighting in this movie.

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

Some things I liked about this was the exploitation factor of the girl … seems like something that’s typical of this genre, but haven’t seen much of it in this fest. Our film has been called gratuitous, but I would actually say this one was, and purposely so, I believe. What girl, in their right mind is going to stop to change her clothes, let alone call her boyfriend vs. 911 after killing something like that in her home? This film was so tongue-in-cheek (I hope that was the intention) that it makes it harder to judge in some respects. Was the blood SUPPOSED to suddenly appear too quickly all over her when she really wasn’t slamming the door that hard? Is the script supposed to be that crazy that she would go & take a shower with those dead things in her home? Tough, because even if it’s meant to be super campy, it’s also a dream (so we believe), which also lends to why things may not normally happen yet are here. All that said, I believe the sound (ADR, etc.) still needed much work, as well as acting (unless it’s supposed to be campy).

Campy is my game.
I can't help myself, I always go for campy.

Well, Thanks for all of the critique and the kind words.

I had a great time in this festval, but this marks the end of an age for me... the end of writing my own shorfilms.

From now on I'm happy to announce that Lingothree will write all future productions.
Yay.
Thanks again.
