I might be asking for too much info, but is a screen included in the price? Just asking because I got sticker shock from the lens prices. I might get sticker shock from the price of a screen too.

I googled some LCD screens and they are quite expensive. Don't tell me any top secret stuff, but just tell me if I am going to have to save up several thousands of dollars to get a screen.

The price of a screen on top of the price of the lenses might price me out of the picture. I thought I was rich, but I am begining to think I am poor, or atleast I will be after I buy a RED.

Astro WM-3004 $9,000 (look at the web page for details)

Marshal VR65P-HD 6.5inch $3,500

it is only 800x480 and still gives me sticker shock.

I'd say that real hi-res lcd onboard with red's price will be as big miracle as the imager itself.
Pretty sad that even Astro's price range the manufacturer is not brave enough to tell the real resolution of their lcd's...

Yes you are right toke, I also went to the astro's website, even downloaded the pdf and couldn't find anything about native resolution.
I bet that certainly it's NOT 1080p and I think it's NOT 720p either.

I have the pany BTLH-900A and that one is 1024x768. In 16x9 it's about 540x1024 although it does have an HD zoom function. That function allows for the HD image to be zoomed to pixel for pixel like the Focus assist on the HVX.

BTW also has the waveform monitor.

Evins monitor is drop dead gorgeous and the pixel resolution is enough to do pretty critcal focusing on. Remember most SD monitors, evin some "HD" monitors are around 200 lines so pushing 500 or so pixels is pretty respectable. there is a point in physical size where pixel resolution hits a visual limit with small monitors, and increasing resolution visually makes little difference as our eyes doesn't optically resolve the difference.

Oh.. and Evins little 9 inch is $4k, but it has alot of tricks built into it, that can be cost offest by being handled by the camera processor. Im sure a more than capable HD monitor could be sourced for red for under 1k and im sure they have already included that into the budget.

Yeah Evin - just used that monitor on a music video shoot in NYC for the band Zero 7 - thing saved my life - waveform came in so handy.

How does those monitors perform in outdoor environments?
Those screens that i have used (mostly unprofessional camcoders) have had some
serious issues with glare in direct sunlight, which can become very annoying.
It would be nice with some type of "antiglare" on the screens so it could be used outdoors.

The Futaba rc control 14MZ has a brilliant "antiglare" system that works very
well.
"It uses transflective technology (layered transparent and reflecting surfaces) plus adjustable backlighting and contrast for easy visibility, even in direct sunlight"

for the pany monitor that Evin has - my AC fashioned a crude black paper tape wrapped sunshade and that did the trick - although I always used zebras and the wave for exposure.

so yeah - glare was a problem

If the RED camera would come with an LCD with the same anti-glare and brightness capabilities as Z1's (which is viewable in direct sunlight w/o a shade) but in much higher res, that would be perfect!

hoodman is a pretty good solution to ambient issues.. the problem with alot of antiglare screens and negative screens is that you really start to loose any sort of exposure or color accuracy.. so your kinda shooting blind, even if you can see your frame.
