To RED or not to RED?

Okay, I haven't quite joined the club yet, but given my budget, I can imagine that I would be using RED with 16mm lenses much of the time or possibly 2/3" lenses. How good can we expect the camera's image to be when not shooting with the entire sensor? (Especially when compared with other HD cameras out there)

Speculate away! Official word from RED is always welcome too.

Hmm, no replies. I guess no one really knows yet. All kinda educated guess work for now.

Bring on windowed 2k footage in the fall!

Ha ha .. Actually Zane 16mm lenses are a good idea. If you dont need 4k of course. Shooting windowed will give you faster frame rates and less data.

If you can use s35mm lenses though, side by side the s35mm lense will look better than the s16mm lens windowed as when you use a s35mm lens windowed you are shooting the center of the glass, which has the best imaging.

Thanks Jarred!

My post was getting lonely.

I am still wondering about the the picture quality the chip will provide in windowed mode, in say, 1080p, as it is not oversampled to the same degree as when using the full chip.

I've read a lot about the need for an oversized chip, being bayer pattern. The frame rates sound pretty sweet, and the dynamic range wouldn't change, but how much of a rez hit can we expect? Will it still be a competitive camera in this mode?

a scan down from a 4k image will provide better results.. its just the way it works. But a "Bayerized" 1080p image is going to be alot better than rez-uped versions that are common on most 5-800 line 1080 cameras you have seen.. as the 2k bayer pushed down to 1080 is relatively close (well close enough) to the "true" resolution of a Bayer 2k image.

correct me if I'm wrong, but 1080p requires a Super 16 lens at a minimum (16 mm format lenses don't cover).

yes you wanna use a S16 lens. However if the camera did an internal anamorphic squeeze, it MAY be possible to use standard 16mm lenses if your shooting scope... but then your shooting squeeze and who wants to do that?
