I just picked up a Nikon 80-200 AF-S on ebay. When I received it, it had lots of internal dust. The seller has not responded. So, It looks like I am gonna cough up some change to get it cleaned. Has anyone had dust removed, and if so, what was the going rate? I hate to see this $1,000 lens like that.
If you can find a reputable repair shop, it's not too big of a repair...the going rate depends on the lens and how familiar the technician is with it usually. Don't know which version of the 80-200 you got (there's been a few generations), but it's probably worth repairing.

I have the AF-S version, the latest and greatest before the 70-200 VR. B&H still sells the light grey version of this lens for $1400, so yeah I would say it was worth getting repaired. It's at Houston Camera, a shop that's been cleaning and repairing lenses since 1968. They're doing it for around $110 which is totally worth it to me. I just can't wait to get it back.. they quoted me 10-14 days

if the seller didnt mention the internal dust, I would file a claim with paypal and make them pay for the repairs and collect against the guy who sold it to you.
Hopefully he will respond and make good and save you the trouble. Unless you got it on the real real cheap.

Well, you would never be able to get the seller to pay for the repairs, just doesn't work like that. The best you could do with that is get a refund and return the lens. I would say, if you got a good deal on it, look at how much it will cost you to repair it, if it is still less than you could have got the lens without dust inside, then keep it, if not, return it to the seller.
