View Full Version : The lost idea.. Can RED Downconvert?

You know this was so obvious to me that I never said anything, yet it's a MAJOR feature given RED'S abilities:

Will RED have the ability to downconvert its signal before saving to the storage mediium?

Think about it, this feature would allow you to purchase the lenses you hope to use 5 years from now for a full size sensor, rather than starting with smaller ones and then having to upgrade once through-put increases.

DOF of a 35mm feature, but with only the bandwith of a 1080 production or even a 720 production.

Guys, this is a very big deal.. I brought this up on another thread, but once I realized it's potential I felt it deserved a spot of its own.. I am pretty active on here and I don't ever remember reading anything about this.

The Least Jim should do is create a RED-DC1. Which stands for RED downconverter 1st generation.. As an extra item.. I know I would buy it in a second!

A box that sits between RED ONE and your storage medium.. You set the input coming rez, and compression(4:2:2 or 4:4:4), coming from RED, and then the output rez, compression, coming out of the box. If you wanted to get really ballsy you could even have a 3:2 pull down setting in order to make the various frame rates compatible with a TAPE based recording system

This subject actually brings up a major design question: Do we really want to use less and less of the chip for different resoultions, or to we always want the option to use the full size chip and then have the camra take the data we need based on our chosen resolution? I realize I am not an engineer, but from a common sense standpoint, I could see this being a major hassle from an engineering perspective, but a massive feature from the consumer's perspective.

Jay i had asked similar questions at another forum.

Question for someone at Red. Under low light conditions and using a Red 35mm lens i would get the max out of both lens size and sensor size right?

Will Red enable me to then downconvert the captured 35mm film to 1080p in camera without compression and then transfer to computer at 1080p.

To all others: i am new to all this so forgive me if it does not make sense. Money is tight, so one wide angle zoom lens is likely to be my lot.

Does filming in this way mean that i will have to take into acount my framing in the LCD and will there be a way to adjust the LCD so that i know where the lines are for 1080p. Like you shoot in 35mm and you see the full 35mm picture frame but by pressing a button or adjustment the 1080p shows as a black outline inside the full frame. Does that make sense?

Oh my god.. I saw this graph but never put the elements together.

This is such a major deal!

I am a beginner at all this but learning hard. I think that the reason others will be using different sized lenses is for a variety of reasons and cost might only be one! Follow focus would be easier witha 16mm lens rather than a 35mm, weight etc.

I am confident that Red will also deliver on a wide angle zoom lens and at a price that will generate a LOT of interest in THEIR lenses and not just the camera. Others keep comparing the best 35mm lens, Cooke or similar at out of reach prices for many of us. I have backed Red with a deposit on the Red camera and i want to back Red with an appropriate 35mm lens.

On the subject of lenses i know so little but i just feel that if Red delivers on the camera then it will also deliver on the lens. Is it better to purchase a lens that has been "designed exclusively" for that particular camera as against one that was made for any camera. What opinions do others have on this?

Yeah I just saw the graph Zane sent me.. I don't know why I never connected the dots on that.

I'm going to go over here and feel stupid now..

Sorry for wasting everyone's time

The only stupid question is one that isn't asked...

No worries.
