I'm trying to learn how to light...

I don't like the way the light falls on her. It looks to me like a soft light above and facing down on her. I would have put a reflector to bounce some back and also done a flash fill for effect.
Lighting is subjective and you literally paint with it. The whole idea with lighting is what sort of mood do you want to create with light? There are some books about this out there, but also several websites that have lighting tutorials.
In my opinion, the best lighting I've seen is the VASST DVD Light it Right. Walter Graff also has several lighting DVDs for film, but I havent seen those.
Finally, and most importantly, play around. What I did for a while was get a model, sit her down, set up a three point lighting set up and then shoot her close, and then go wide to see the set up I used. I went through these experiments and saw how each set up looked and how it made me feel. Sometimes you want a lot of shadows, sometimes you want none. Lighting is about experimenting.

looks too flat. try using less light and bring it to one side to make one half of the face darker. also, for a candid shot, it looks posed. maybe make the setting more natural...
my .02. here's a pic that demonstrates.
