the problem is I copied over the Mxf files from a Project I did a month ago into the Same Contents follder that I just shot with on SUNday... Avid can't have 2 Contents folders on the same drive. well I Copied the old stuff in to the new Contents driectory clicking yes to all and now it worte over the old MXF file!

A. is there any way for me to get it back? ie though get files back?

B. I thought this wasn't soposed to hapen out of over 1TB of footage it did...

C. Avid needs all the file in the same directory how can I make shure this dosn't happen agian?

If you overwrote the files on the hard drive, then they're gone. Unless you have a backup elsewhere. The computer should have given you a warning that you were about to over-write existing files when you did the copy.

When I copy a P2 card to a folder or sub-directory, I make sure each previous P2 card's folder is given a unique name. When copying a P2 card onto the hard drive, the P2 card usually ends up being labeled "NONAME", the same label that the HVX200 assigns to aP2 Card.

Before I copy additional P2 cards onto the hard drive, I'll rename the previous NONAME folder on the hard with an 8-digit date using a YearMonthDay format (20060705 for example) and if there's more than one P2 copied in a particular day, I'll also give it a numeric extension (20060705-01).

Note that I am not renaming the P2 card mounted on the computer. I leave the P2 absolutely untouched throughout the process. It's striclty acting as a source for the raw materials.

I've been using P2 Genie to give all my P2 card folders names as I copy them over to my hard drive.
So several P2 cards of fireworks will be copied to my hard drive as Fireworks_001, Fireworks_002, etc.

I've had duplicate clip file names before. But, since I have the original MXF files all backed up I've never lost a clip.
The computer should let you know there's already a file with that clip name.
I usually then just go in and change the other file by adding a "a" or a "2" .
It's only happened a couple of times but the computer told me that the filename already existed and was an easy fix.

The HVX manual says it will name in sequential order up to 2000 files. I don't know what happened in your case, but did you exceed 2000 files? (seems a little excessive but who knows what you have shot :) ) Perhaps it just started over?

i get repeat files names often enough to have had to make sure every card is in a different directory - 2000 shots is not all that much for a feature film

I have yet to make a feature, so I am impressed with 2000. :) By the way American standard looks very nice. I have seen both the trailer and teaser. I also started read some of the production notes. Very interesting and well done!

=I am not hijacking this thread =

back to clip names and malfunctions :)

after 5 months, a feature, 3 comercails, 40min industrial. and random Timelapses. the feature alone is 1,100 files. ... and yes the files are completely gone.

I guess that's one good reason to use Final Cut Pro. You don't use the master files to edit with, but with easily recreatable files.

And you can change content directories at will.

The HVX manual says it will name in sequential order up to 2000 files.

That is per card. In other words, if you have 2000 clips on one card. The camera can easily give two clips identical names in just two consecutive cards in the camera.
