Hi Jim and red team. Since we are all expecting RED to be a very durable camera that will allow us to operate in all sorts of environments, I wanted to address the issue of flange focus stability which is a problem that some other cameras have when the internal or external temperatures get extreme.

Have you guys decided on a way to minimize thermal expansion on the optical head block? Hopefuly RED will be using some exotic alloys like Invar or other stable matels so we don't have to worry so much about slipping flange focus all the time.

Maybe this isn't so much an issue with the sensor design of mysteriam as compared to the other camera with 3 ccd configurations and prisms. I dunno.

This is a sleeping giant problem and Im glad you brought it up.. as not many people know about it. Stuart English, now with Red, If i remember correctly was one of the guys on the Panasonic Varicam team that figured out how to avoid this by like materials... so im sure he will bring that knowledge to the board.

Ahh, that's good to know they have top men working on it. Not that I was expecting anything less of course. I'm expecting backfocus to be ROCK solid on the RED camera. I know Clairmont camera retrofits all their Cinealtas' with custom heads using Invar and it works like a charm.

(bleh...should've run a spell check on my original post)
