We have heard a TON of good ideas from this forum. While some will make Rev. 1, many will not. There just isn't enough time and resources to fit everything in considering our aggressive schedule. When we began posting, there was a large group who thought our project was a scam. Now, I want to make sure that we are not held up as super-heroes. Somewhere in-between is just fine.
Every idea posted here is being considered. And we are listing the good ones to be implemented in stages. Firmware and software upgrades are truly a consideration from the beginning. And the more modular the design, the more flexibility our camera has as new technology is released. I just want to make sure no one is disappointed when we come out because we didn't include every feature mentioned by this group from day one.

Wow, that's really great of you Jim, I didn't realize you guys were watching the contest ideas that closely! :)
By the way, I heard that the design was changed yet again(?) on DVInfo.net, has the RED website been updated yet?

The website will get a full makeover right before IBC.

Hey Jim. What do you think of my idea? The one about mounting the storage device of choice to REDoNe like a film magazine and then connecting it to a universal data port rather than having the storage devices a native part of the camera.
Here it is if you haven't read it. If you have time, PM me and tell me what you think. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=59269
As much as I'd love to win the contest that Jarred is hosting, I'd take the implementation of this feature over winning a contest.

FatBird... I'm not sure it is your idea alone. But it is a good one.

Thanks. I think you get what I'm going for. Outfitting the camera with several universal data outports so that users can record the footage to the piece of technology that's most useful to them, plus it maintains a film workflow.
There are no unique ideas, only people willing to take an idea further than anyone else. This is true whether you're making films, designing a camera, or building a sunglasses company. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Man i love this kinda interaction.. When was the last time you could actually talk straight with development about a camera and they ACTUALLY listen and respond?... fan-friggin-tastic.

If I were FatBird19, I would feel like I were Moses talking to the burning bush. WOW, Jannard replied to your post. I have to go change my underwear. I didn't know Jannard actually read the posts. I thought he had some underling do that.
Maybe I shouldn't have writtin such goofball ideas in the idea contest. I would laugh if my ideas were hanging on a piece of paper in a RED engineer's cubicle. The engineer would be saying, "what retard came up with this idea. I can't believe I have to incorporate this goofball concept into RED."

Acrochordon,
The suggestion list probably reminds them of a movie title: "The Good, the Bar, and the Ugly"!
Seriously, it's cool that you're taking the time and seizing the opportunity to give direct input to the development process, rather than remain silent, then complain about missing features on the camera when it ships. They can't and won't use all suggestions, but at least they're listening to us in the development process...

It is good news that the Red camera has gone through another re-design phase. why?, well the founder has indicated that he wants Red to be more modular (if i picked him up right). This is "exactly" what i wanted to hear.
One concern (to those who have ordered) is if Red come out with a camera that would be replaced with a red 2 within a year and some of the suggestions made on this forum are included in the new version of red 2 that are absent from Red 1. Those stuck with Red one might not be so happy :(
Hopefully part of the reason for the re-design is to prevent that very thing happening by allowing the feasable best suggestions to be included in the red 2 and can also be ADDED to the red 1. It would be a disaster if Red 1 became obsolete:)
I think "ok hope" i am on track with Reds thinking, if so those who have ordered now will be smiling for a long time to come. I also think it was refreshing to hear of the change so soon after the last change. How many named camera makers would be frightened to declare such a move in case it was interpreted as not knowing what they are doing? Great stuff.

I think the design pilosophy behind Red One is that there will not be a Red Two for many years. Maybe even 10. Because instead of a Red 2 there will be a Mysterium 2 that can be swapped in out of your Red One, or a drive or the LSI bord or the DSP. So you really don't need to worry so much about a Red two. I think the most upgraded thing wil be storage, as the technology to write vast amounts of data in smaller and smller media (Holographic) becommes reality we may see upgrades to Red One's atorage that allow 4K Raw to be recordrd to internal memory. AND THAT'S FRIKEN AWESOME!

A more "modular" camera body could mean a detachable camera head.

Evin,
You post is very accurate, and it closely parallels what Jim Jannard stated in my published interview with him (April 2006) about RED. Specs have yet to be finalized, but the tech philosophy behind the RED camera development has remained the same throughout the development process: flexible, scalable, upgradeable, modular, and affordable.
