I am currently editing a project shot in upstate New York at a Woodstock style musical event in the middle of nowhere. (On the Deleware, Memorial Day weekend) The footage from the HVX has been looking great (720 30PN)

I have been editing on a G4 Powerbook 17" aluminum using Digital Cinema Preview out of the DVI output to a Samsung 42" plasma as a secondary display. I got tired of all the rendering so I went out and bought a Quad G5 tower. I installed Final Cut on the new system and did all the updates. I then took my external FW800 drive with my media and project files and tried to use the new system as I was using the laptop. I can not seem to get the digital cinema preview to output to the plasma display, only the main display.

I am setting everything in Final Cut EXACTLY the same as on the powerbook.

What am I missing? Because it's an apple product I am sure the answer involves oodles of cash flowing in their direction. Do I need a different video card? Or an additional one? And why can I do this successfully with a product that cost half the price?

BTW Apple tech support wouldn't even discuss this with me without paying them EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR APPLE PRO TECH SUPPORT FOR FINAL CUT !!!!!!!!!

I guess the fact that I have allready spent at least $7000 on their "stuff" in the last three months means nothing to them.

If I have to spend any more money I will be editing outside of the 7-11 on the corner of Cahuenga and Burbank....Please drop some change into the cup next to my Powerbook. When I collect 3200 of them Apple may help me.

The HVX is one of the greatest pieces of technology I have ever owned. I can feel it pushing me to persue better quality, more interesting images.

This is a great forum. Can't wait to get Barry's book.

It should work, like in your powerbook...

Try harder can be an answer?? :-)

Hi ksteiger,
It really should work. Questions:
When you boot the computer with the samsung attatched do you see the mac desktop on both monitors? If not you have to debug that connection before you can use it in FCP.
When you start FCP does that screen go black?
In FCP under 'Audio/Video Setting/Summary' (first tab) Do you have 'none' plus 4 other choices? You want Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full Screen'
I'll PM you my home number if you want to discuss it. I'm on the west coast, too.
cheers,
Sam

Dude, Mac's rule! Try this:
-View (Drop Down Menu)
-External Video (At the bottom)
-All Frames

Thanks for your replies. I loved the answer "try harder" that was great. And I did. The answer is....
Before I first installed FCP Studio, I did all the software updates available to me from Apple.
I installed FCP Studio and, once again, did all the available updates after which I was having the aforementioned problem.
I then posted my question here.

I woke up this morning and searched for software updsates, ya know, just for grins. A pro apps support update (from Feb '05) appeared that had not before. I installed that and now have the choice of "Digital Cinema Preview" without "main" All is cool...

I wonder why this did not appear the first time???
Thanks you for your replies.
And Macs ARE great as long as you don't have to speak to an Apple Certifed Homo Sapien.

Hi Ken,
Often these updates have to be installed in a certain order to function. Sorry it was confusing.
Cheers,
Sam
