I've been using Avid and everything has been going smoothly. I put the files in the MXF/1/ directory and had been editing for a few days. Suddenly today I put in some new files, and then Avid won't recognize them saying there is an error initializing the folder, but when I try to delete them, it tells me access is denied because the files are being used...
what can I do? please help!

Access the properties of the files and unlock it, then delete it. I know this helps for us Apple users.

When I go to properties, I don't see a "locked" option and even when I change anything it tells me that access is denied. I tried to change it from read-only and it wouldn't let me. Could you specify what you mean?
P.S. I created an MXF/2/ folder and could access other files, but the problem is that there is still 8 gigs of unmovable and undeleteable files sitting in my MXF/1/ folder.

try this:
1) Open Control Panel -> Folder Options
2) Under "View" un-check "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and apply
3) You now have granular control of file & user permissions and ownership
4) Go to your media folders, right-click on them, go to the "Security" tab
5) Add "Administrators" to the "Group or user names:" box.
6) Allow "Full Control" in the permissions box.
