Match the sequence settings to the cam settings.
Set log and capture to noncontrollable device.

You really need an external drive to record to. Set the camera to a compatible setting to FCP and one that will go out the firewire port. None of the PN (native) formats will work. Set FCP project up in compatible format to the one you're sending out the camera. Set capture device setting on FCP to non-controllable device. Any problems PM me, I do this all the time.

You do NOT need an external drive to record to. I wish people who post would actually own a 13" Macbook and actually try to capture with it before they impart thier infinite wisdom.
If you install only FCP 5.1 on the Macbook and not all of Studio, you should have about 73 GB left on your hard drive after OSX. If you opted for the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 SATA drive, you have the highest performing mobile drive on the market (see Storage Review.com)
IF you capture DVCPRO HD at 720 30p you should have a solid hour of recording time on the Macbook. Don't try to record every last GB of space, leave a buffer of about 10% of your drives total capacity or in this case about 10GB. This can be set in FCP to whatever number you like. Performance declines rapidly as you come to the end of any hard drives recording limit.

I tried to capture 1080 25p in the internal hard drive of a Mac Book Pro without a problem. 40 minutes. But I had to let only two channels of audio active in the log and capture window: with more I can't capture more than 15 minutes.
