"Onboard or external high-resolution RED monitors come equipped with advanced tools for framing, exposure and focus."
I'm not sure if this was covered already or not. But I read this at RED'S website and never really caught this before. I guess RED is working on their own hi-res external red monitor.
sweeeeet.
I guess I'll put a hold on that Marshall.

Nothing is finalized yet, but I asked Jim Jannard about that in my published interview with him in April. He wouldn't commit to the technology of the screen (LCD, SED, or LCoS), but he did say it would be high-resolution, and that there would be connections for an external high-resolution monitor or viewfinder via HDMI. In later posts, RED development team members mentioned their intention to make the on-board screen detachable, and re-mountable on other locations on the camera (cage, etc.).

It would just be incredible to have a 1080p LCD on there, but yeah, anything from now until they officially announce the specs is just rumors and/or wishlists.

I have a Apple 23" Cine display. It would be cool if I could connect that to RED. So, HDMI has been confirmed. I learn so many tidbits here that I don't get from the RED website. I guess RED doesn't want to be pinned down. It will be great once RED comes out in production, and we all learn the final specs from the RED website.

yes exactly. its a fine balance between them letting us "in" on development and them being able to constantly tweak things without letting people down. So far they seem to be doing it just right.

In my published interview with Jim Jannard (April 2006) he mentioned RED's intention to include an HDMI output on the camera. I believe HDMI is also backward compatible with DVI, so high-resolution monitoring of RED should be no problem.

If we, DVXusers, have as much input as some think, I wonder if engineers at RED think that their company has been nerdjacked by mad web forum users. I would hope they don't listen to us too much, and go with what they think is best.

Oh, they have fine minds of their own, but they're also smart enough to solicit and evaluate suggestions from potential users, from beginners to seasoned professionals. There's a new breed, and re-tread end users that are equal parts artist and techie. Specifically on DVX User, there is a growing group of people who will be professionally and emotionally comfortable using a DVX100 or HVX200 for a project in the morning, and then shifting gears and using a RED One camera system in the afternoon - rented if necessary. Technology in a convergent industry has not only converged, but is spreading horizontally to enable what was formerly the domain of individual fiefdoms to be a related and accessible collection of working environments. Users will still need a high mix of talent, experience, and technology to create top-level work, but IMO manufacturers listening to the end user in the product development process is a harbinger of something very positive in the motion media industry.
Once they've listened, they still have to go through a "yes/no" process for inclusion of suggestions in the product, based on considerations of time constraints, marketability, fiscal feasibility, reasonable utility, and ease of upgrades.

hey, come on, dreaming of even not finished SED and 1080p on a X"-monitor is nice, but unlikely.
I think a 800*5xx is the best we can get in that size.
Think about HD-displays from DELL in 17". You probably won't get that fitting on a 5(?)" display, probably even smaller...
Lets better hope and focus on a hi-res viewfinder ; )
