So mini dv vcrs are around 600+ dollars, so I was wondering if buying a cheapo mini dv cam would work to transfer 24 advanced video. Just to keep the wear on my dvx's heads down you know.

Yes, it works fine. Next time try using the search feature before asking. There are literally hundreds of threads on this already.

Insead of spending "$600" you could just get a "MiniDV Rewinder" for £11.91
Maxell MiniDV cassette rewinder

I heard that those cheap little rewinders don't detect tape end, so it just slams against the end to stop, and can actually damage the tape.

duuude, most VCRs don't detect tape end, what they do (usually) is near the beginning and end of any tape the torque required is higher than in the middle areas, thus the higher current is detected and that is used to stop the motor.
But yea, I'm sure there are more expensive ones out their with "advanced" tape end detection :)

But he wants to use it for capturing video, not for rewinding... right?
