I was thinking of getting te cartoni f101, but I want something that will handle the red_lens, cage, monitor with no stress. I think a fully equipped red might be too much for the cartoni. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Yeah, wait to find out the weight and balance of your fully configured RED #102 package and then try the system on a few heads before you buy. Too many unknows now, don't you think?

if you are looking for head/sticks that will work for 35mm, 16mm 2/3" lens on a RED - you should go down to a local camera rental house..
take a look at a arri III with either a 25-250 or 20-100 zoom on on tripod they choose - pan/tilt it - if that head works for you then try a smaller head till you find a head that is too small for the weight .. then go up from there till you find one that feels RIGHT to YOU ...

Greg:
Yeah, I hear ya on that one. definitely too many unknowns. my dilemna. I need sticks now for my hvx200. I have been borrowing my school's tripod and need my own. I was close to hitting up bh since they finalyl restocked the f101...but then it hit me that the cartoni may not even be enough.
Donatello:
good idea. I'll definitely give your suggestion a try. Do you have any personal suggestions of good brands to try out? It seems like there is a general consensus on the dvxuser board about the cartoni focus being ideal for the hvx200. Do you have anything that crosses your mind that could be "THE" tripod/head to get for RED?
thanks for all of your suggestions.

I don't know, I always figured I'd be a Bogen guy myself, I like the way they look. :) Just giving a rough estimate, the top Bogen tripod I saw on B&H photo supports 66lbs with the 526 head for $1,700. But then they have film tripods that support a whole lot more but cost a lot more too, so I don't know exactly what we'll be needing for the RED, but I don't know how it could weigh more than 66lbs at most.

the best idea is to get a tripod that you can adjust the balance weight.. so you can use it with your HVX etc. now then up the ante when red comes out.

I need to completely outfit my RED camera when it arrives, it will be a step up from what I have been using. There isn't any local rental houses in my area where I can try out gear. When the RED bootcamp is ready, hopefully in CA, where can I spend a day or two trying out tripods, heads, glass, etc. before I buy?
Thanks,
Steve

If you're going to the L.A. Bootcamp, there's plenty of shops all around, admittedly some are about a half-hour or so away from L.A., but they're in the general area. One of the places I visited last time I was there was the Samy's Camera which is a little down the way from the Farmer's Market area. It was really nice, they had multiple levels of stuff and had almost every piece of support equipment you could think of.
Just look around on the internet a bit and you're sure to find addresses for places in the L.A. area, heck, even the L.A. phonebook in your hotel room will list a bunch of places. The EVS store didn't look like it was too far away when I used Mapquest.com, unfortunately I didn't get enough time to go check them out last time I was in L.A., but they weren't too far.

Abel Cine has a huge new location, the biggest camera store in burbank. They have all the sticks setup, and also have Panther heads that you can drool over. RedBootcamp will most likely be at Abel to boot.

This might be slightly off topic. I went to see a demo of the Sony XDCAM-HD in Miami. They had a local authorized reseller there ready to take your order. They gave me a buisness card and quoted me a price for the daily rental fee. The camera was on a tripod at the demo.
I am in Miami, so I can't go to a boot camp in CA. I can't go to NAB either. It would be cool if RED eventually had a boot camp in most major cities. They could have local authorized resellers there to take my order. They could show some accessories like tripods too.
By the way I don't ever pan, so I am thinking about gettin a Bogen with pistol grip. I am waiting to see how much RED will weigh before I buy. I already have two Bogens and they are good. I especially like the travel size one that fits in my backpack, although it will not support a big ENG rig.
