Bloody Mary
"Bloody Mary" is a game kids play in a bathroom. Someone will go into a bathroom, either turn off all of the lights, and light a candle, or just stay in pitch black. Then, they will look into the mirror and chant "Bloody Mary" over and over again. The idea is that after chanting her name, "Bloody Mary" will appear to them in the mirror. And she is supposed to be any number of things: a victim of some horrific accident or crime, a witch burned at the stake hundreds of years ago. Whatever you are supposed to see, most kids get so freaked out and bolt from the bathroom before they see anything.

On the first post click "modify"
Then click "go advanced"
You'll see the title there. I don't think we nornally can change the Title of the threads but I think its been added for specifically for these short threads.
BTW, Timur will rock your world, but you know this.

Oh yeah, I thought you could because my thread and 1st post have the same title.
Only thing I can guess is PM a mod ... just the danger of posting one of these early I guess.

However, he did get to spend the evening covering a beautiful actress in Vasoline, so he's glad he signed on with this picture already. :)
Movie is cast and shoot dates scheduled.
We are still trying to lock down a location or two, so if you are in NYC and have a really good bathroom, or a good, long hallway, let us know. We have them, but are still looking for some other options while we can.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing as I read the thread....you're quick.
PS-Desperate. I don't know how I'm going to get it done either, but I'm sure we can. Just cut your daily sleep down to about 3 hours and drink more coffee. That's what I'm gonna do. I'm also going to have to let the baby play by himself all day long, but hey, it's all for a good cause.

Great screening of your Man Hole series last night.
We had a great time.
Working on blood effects today?
How's it going?
Mark Harris
08-27-2006, 12:21 PM
I just delivered some of the prosthetics to Timur, who is now going to do his magic on them. I guess we'll find out tonight if this whole idea will work. But I think it will.
Also, getting final costumes today, and rehearsing a couple of the actors for a scene with some heavy choreography.
Also today doing some mundane stuff like taking Timur's storyboards and breaking them down into shot lists by location/cast/times. We are going to set-up some scenes and pre-light tomorrow night, so that tues morning we can hit the ground running with the shoot. Yikes! We shoot this week!!!!!!

It's gonna be GREAT. Now I have a good handle on the schedule and the pre-prod is nearly done - and that after a hungover post Man-Hole screening day, no less!

Well, I can always let you grease up one of the other girls, you know, just for fun...:)
So today we are dressing the set and tonight pre-lighting for tomorrow's shoot.
We have a kick-ass crew, with many of the usual suspects turning out for this one.
Wish us luck!

Day 1 down. And we were ahead of schedule so actually grabbed two shots from tomorrow's shoot!
And there were elements I had some doubts about, not because I thought we couldn't do them, but because I hadn't seen them done yet. But everything, from the make-up to other special effects, to the camera work, came out exactly as planned.
And the hours of rehearsal I spent with our lead paid off, because she was able to hit every beat over and over again.
Good shoot today Timur!!!!!
"Did you bring the tapes?" I know I was mad, but I laugh about it now. If only we had BTS footage for that moment... :)

Also, want to welcome to the team, FlintMI, you know that loud-mouthed SOB who's always getting in trouble around here? Maybe that's part of why we love him so much...
In addtion to production support on previous shoots, FlintMI provided a great song for my last short. He's a multi-talented bonus to the team.

Yeah, it will go somehing like this:
"they are the gentlest creatures on earth...but this summer, they are really, really pissed off..."
:)
Nah, I'm not worried. I am confident that when we release it, the title will drive traffic, and I am very proud of the work everyone did and think the quality of the work will drive more and more people once people start talking about it. Regardless of who wins this contest, we have something we are extremely proud to show off. Timur and I turned out to be a very good team, I think, because he likes to focus on Photography, making images, and I like to focus on character, story, and acting. I think we compliment each other pretty well.
And what I said to Flint was I think people will be surprised. Man-Hole is a sit-com and should be judged as such. But this is the first FILM people here will have seen me write and direct. And in fact, this might be the first FILM people have seen Timur DP here. I don't know what else he has up.

I don't want it to sound like we've made the greatest thing since Howard the Duck here, but we are confident that many of the images are quite shocking and truely horrifying, and to put up grabs and give people pre-conceptions, hurts us more than helps. I honestly do think people will enjoy it more going into it blnd.
But as I said, when we reveal the title, that alone will be something a lot of people recognize and will drive them to at least give it a chance.

I would like to know as much as possible about your makeup and blood effects. I know you don't want to give too much away, but just from a technical standpoint.
I will try to post some more later today. I can easily give the blood recipe too. It's probably the most common one out there, and you probably know it already from theater. But when I come back later, I will post the ratios of ingredients and such. And will try to get some more up about the prosthetics too.
Have to run out for a while now.

Coming from a contemporary art background, my aesthetic sensibility is very very very specific. Every milimete of film plane is controlled as much a possible.
Thsi sensibiliy carries over into this current project as much as possible. We tried our best to make sure there was a consistent and unrelenting visual thrust in
the film. Mark approached me with the idea of joiningforces on this project after we worked together on his film Manhole-IV. Origionally i was going to
create somethign with less of a narritivre and more of a montage of horrific images based on an old Turkish folk tale. I read Marks script, which was refined and of high quality, and descided to apply the special effects, and cinematic elements i wanted to create in my project and apply it to his narritive. In terms of lighting, i wanted a theatrical, and almost abstract lighting scheme during selected segments of the film. I believe abstraction of the image is crucial to create psychological tension. I looked to Sue DeBeer and Bill Viola, Video artists, for inspiration on the lighting scheme. For other segments i looked to Nuri Bilge Ceyleyan, DP and director for the Film "Distant". Ceyleyan uses Incedentals as keys and allows darkness to be a force unto itslef. Powerful stuff.
I canot stress how important it is for you to be accustomed to your Gear, practice, and story board. Organization pre shoot is what makes or beaks picture. thsi way you dont have to compramise your shots because of schedule restrictions. you know exactly what you can do, and when. We were shooting on the SGpro, almost exclusivly
and having been shooting stills for 10 years i know my lenses inside and out. This was a huge help because i could block shots knowing the limitations of the scene, lighting, space, and be able to select exactly what look i was going for in my head, and knowing exactly whcih lens would do the trick. Below are some of the Storyboards, and the accompanying stills. granted the locations were still a mystery to me at the time, so some of the elemnets changed, however the basic framing is about exactly where i was imagining. Granted the grabs i have dont match the exact moment in time of the Story board. but these shots were in there.

For the actual filming, we had a production monitor upsidedown to help with exposure and continuty, and most MOST importantly, to make sure the Focus was perfect. Focusing using the EVDTL is good in a pinch but not or critical shots.or extraordinarily shallow DOF. which because of the dark nature of the film, was used often because the lenses were left wide open to ensure proper exposure. Now alot of people treat the 35 adapter as a "filter", where as because the lenses are so familair to me, i treat it as a different camera. the lenses operate as they should. their natural effects and "defects" are part of their charachter and help add an organic feel to the digital image. Also, The Sgpro because of it s Unique GG material, trandsmits more light that i think just about any 35adapter. with my F1.2 lens, in total i am only really losing about 1.5 stops of light. Half stop throughthe SG, 1 stop through the lens. actually about T2.0 but still its very useable. we even managed to go Ala Barry lyndon and shoot by candle lightwith an accptable image. My secret to good lowlight is, the shutter speed. set the synchro scan to 1/33 or 1/30th of a second. IT buys you a half stop back, and still has the 24P stutter without being to smeary. thsi way a simple boost in post gets you al you need.
But for most of the filming we over lit wit plans to bring it down later. This way the imges are cleaner, and with more definintion.
More soon.....

none, but it was so "real" that it caused problems. I'll let Mark or Timur elaborate! :)

No squibs, but we did pump blood at one point. But it was a remarkably low-tech solution. Just like surgical tubes and Timur blowing through one end at the right pressure to get the effect we wanted (Insert Timur blowing joke here!).
In the end, I think keeping it as simple as possible is the best. For instance, check out Timur's reflector for the CU shot of the Virgin statue in my sig:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/2939/1157432206.jpg
Yes, he is using the actual storyboards as a reflector. In general, this is my favorite part about working with that guy: he just has no rules. If it gets the image, he'll do it.

This director i know in Turkey, he shoots like Coca Cola/Deutche Bank commercials, wins awards all the time, and people ask him abut how he gts beautiful imagery. Like for example in one scene, a soccer ball hits the ground in a Coke commercial, but it hits the ground so hard its like an earthquake. and the image vibrates.
A insider magazine asked hi how he got that great effect, whether it was in an After effects like program or if he used a shake plate, liek a vibrator yo uattach to the camer that makes perfect shakes. his reply way " i kicked the tripod really hard"
That line was kinda based on his thinking.

I concur. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. I am sure to be amazed. Especially after the litte screenshot I was shown that tells me how much detail went into this movie. Mark and Timur are both talented individually and combined are like Voltron, a force to be reckoned with. Good thing I got their help on my short! And let me tell you they were both a tremendous help. That just goes to show that when it comes to helping out a friend and fellow DVXuser it is not about the competition but about being a stand up guy, which everyone on my set was. Except for the women, who were attractive, classy professionals who acted their arses off.

You get better imaging if you hook up 2 mics and spread them some.
The mic choice should depend on the type of effect that is being recorded. I do low frequency stuff in mono mostly, as no imaging is needed. For high frequency FX I mostly do stereo at short distance, to eliminate the acoustics of the recording room a bit (even though there are little acoustics left from using dampening material). Spreaded mics (A/B) isn't neccesarily the best solution. It's true that A/B provides a nice stereo image, but if you need a more stable center use X/Y (mics put together and moved away 90 degrees from each other). This technique (like A/B) is best done with cardioid condenser or cardioid dynamic mics.

What type of low frequency sounds do you record? Things like rumbling trains and such?
I like using 2 mics all the time because you can seprate the track if it sounds better with just one and if the imaging sounds nicer you have it. I also found that using 2 different brands of mics has (to me) a very nice image. Like if one mic records low levels and one records higher better, when you put them together it sounds so....deep.

What type of low frequency sounds do you record? Things like rumbling trains and such?
I'm now talking low sounds I record internally, such as sounds I mix and mangle around with to create impacts and to add more low end to footsteps and other foley.
Stereo imaging is mostly of most importance to high & high mid frequencies. The lower the frequency, the less important the imaging is. This is due to the way these lower frequency waves travel through air (which rather travels in all directions than more in a single direction the way high frequencies do). It can get very irritating though to have a bass guitar only come out of the left speaker, as a lot of energy would be coming from that speaker, so the panning is still of importance down to a certain frequency, where it's not even possible any more to hear where the sound source is.
Every mic has it's maximum dB level that it can handle, and a noise level the mic itself produces. The further these are apart, the higher the 'signal to noise ratio'. So mics with a lower self noise would be better at capturing soft sound sources.
When doing a stereo recording, In most cases it's best to use a matched pair (same type, mostly sold together). To get that deep low end, an easy wat to do so is to use two small-diaphragm condensers (for instance a matched pair of Rode NT5's) and run them through a nice clean sounding pre-amp and record 24 bit.
Also, for all you cinematographers, you should see a mic as a camera. Zoom in, and you'll capture that fraction of the sound. Zoom out, and you'll capture the whole thing. Zoom out even more, and you'll capture the whole room with it. The best way to test this is to move around the mic(s) and monitor what you're doing, using a neutral pair of headphones, of monitor speakers.

Yeah, I hope they have the effect we want on the audience. Nina said tht one of our things looked scarier in real life than it did in the rough. But regardless, I think the make-up effects really served the story perfectly. It was a good match of me writing something down and giving it to Timur to interpret visually with his sculpture/art background.

That HVX grab of mark has some serious banding in the reds.
Those screenies remind me of "Carrie".

ACtually that grab of mark is an HVX. but i believe we were demonstrating how bad an image you can possibly make on Video. 12DB gain, under a dim red light.... in DV

Yeah, gearing up. I just went and bought a costume piece I'd bought before, and returned, thinking we were done with it. D'oh!
But yeah, psyched. After tomorrow, we have all the footage. Then by Sunday, I will have the edit timing locked, and we can proceed with Color correcting, and the amazing score Herman's cooking up for us.

THis is something i wrote up for marks other movie thread. But the laws still apply to Bloody Mary. ITs about The Workflow with the 35 Adapter. Enjoy:
Actually i have worked with three 35mm adapters. Sgpro, Brevis35, Letus 35a, and the soon to be released Go35.
The Sgpro, Go35, and brevis recieving my top nod in terms of performance.
The Sgpro i have needs some work however. the Achromat is not quite up to par for the quality im looking for because of the fact that my SGpro is a Hybrid model, some thing like a tricked out honda, while technichally as fast as a real sports car, it has its limitations. The Sgpro Hybrid i have has all the SGpro parts with exception of the Achromat. And thats its weak point. but this goes only for my specific copy. I actually have the Very First "Sgpro". I am retro fitting it with a Redrock M2 HD achromat. it will then be unstopable.
AS far as work flow, i really now rely on a Production monitor, and my tried and tested lenses. My favorite being a 55mm F1.2 Canon FD. This is the Jewel of my Lens collection, follwoed very quickly by a Quirky, vingeting, low quality 17-28mm Wide Zoom, that i have fallen in love with. i love its warm organic and visually stunning charachteristics. Immedialtly after this i Trust my 24mm F2.8 CAnon FD, as my stock lens of choice. I love its image charachteristics. Sharp, but still capable of shallow DOF, and wide enough to see everythign and help you compose Visually interesting composition, but without any added lens articfacts ot the image, like barrel distortion or chorma abbrasion, or worse, resolution losss at the corners.
I ahve been shooting Photos since i was 13, and using manual focus SLR type CAnon AE1 Program, running FD lenses. the lenses are second nature to me, and each one has a personality, some like being pushed hard in some situations and others fall apart under certian lighting conditions. My 55m F1.2 gives me the best performance though all its Fstop ranges, and is also the brightest lens you can get for under 1000$.
There were many siuation where i have beeen shooting with candle light though my F1.2, and the SGpro ( which is one of the lowest in light loss) with the DVX at full wide and the Shuter at 1/33 a second. ( FYI set your synchroscan to 1/33 for lowlight, it gives you an extra half stop, and still preserves the motion cadence accuratly.) and still managed to get a VERY reasonable and natural looking picture. its dark, but it looks like candle light with good sharpness and color reproduction. thanks to both the SGpro's secret GG material, which provides a STUNNING trandslation of colors, to the CCD's and the Canon Glass which gives color a natural, yet somewhat nosstalgic look. Similar to the color pallete of Napoleon Dynamite. thats what i think Canon glass looks like. very muted, but very accurate.
The work flow is sometimes complicated, as i am often dolleying Focus pulling, and controling exposure, all while looking at a Monitor Upside down. But for the quality of the image, its all worth it. Look at Manhole IV. this was my first Serious foray in to workign exclusivly with 35mm lenses on DV. I hav made other projects using it but non this laden with it.
Mark harris and i's next project, for Horror fest, is shot EXCLUSIVLY on 35mm adapter, however under the proper conditions. this is careful lighting, proper motivated camera movement, and An extreme attention to detail when it comes to composition and the artistic quality of the Film.
All the work i have put into the visual elements of this Horror fest will hopefully reflect and grow upon the work i provided for my friend JAck daniel Stanley on Bonehand. I ahve grown as a DP, and hopefully it will show thourgh.

Hey TimurCivan, I enjoyed your info above on the 35mm adapter. I just purchased on that I could afford and that was available... the Ed35mm 1.5 (courtesy of Edweirdo). I love that I now have an adapter and look forward to using it. I know that I will learn more as I experiment and play with it but i was just wondering if you had any other info in this site concerning the use of 35 adapters.
The Ed 1.5 is a static adapter and the one that I really want to own one day is the RedRock M2.
BTW, were you the DP Bone Hand? I loved that film!
Thanks again for the info! Many of us appreciate it!!!

I wish I had a cast. I am finding it difficult to be behind the camera and in front of it at the same time! Seriously. I know that sounds stupid, like a "duh" statement, but I thought that I could do this all on my own. And I will. Just a big ol' learning experience!

The Amazing Nina, who also helped on Make-up and producing, hand-picked a bunch of recent grads from Sarah Lawrence College for me to audition. Nina's a theater director too, so I knew going in that everyone I saw could act. But yeah, Leah turned out beyond my wildest expectations.
We only rehearsed for 10 hours, but she really brought an amazing amount of creativity to the role. She brought her own choices, but was very open to discovering new things in rehearsal - as am I. And many of the things she discovered actually made me see the character differently, even though I wrote it in the first place.

Gotta love that!
I love rehearsals. Both as an actor and a director... I love that exploration and discovery stage.
Then to go on and nail the role really feels great.
Mark Harris

I've heard filmmakers say they don't rehearse, which I really cannot understand. I don't really like to fiddle with performances on set. I like to have them settled and pretty much where they need to be when we get to shooting. There are just too many other things to think about at that point. As a result, we generally wind up not doing too many takes of any one thing. Sometimes new stuff comes up on set, but I don't like to be there all day and night, so I like the performances to be solid going in.
Plus, I'm an actor by training, so working with actors is fun for me.

yea you know we usually only do 2 or 3 takes per scene which is quite surprisingly fast and efficent. the actors usually nail it within 2 takes. Which is good for me because i gt less tired, and can focus on perfecting camera work and lighting.

Ouch! What a slave driver!
I find that the best takes for an actor are usually in the first handful... you know, 2-4 takes. It's the crew that sometimes need more! Once, I was an actor on a full length Indy and we did something like 27 takes! It sucked! Two actors with the crew pulling some dolly shot that circled us at a piano. It was insane.
Then, the director had the nerve to tell us a week later (or so) that he ended up using the 3rd take! F*cker! Jeez, it was a long scene and we spent hours and hours on it.
Sorry, side-tracked reliving that nightmare!

Agreed... well prepared actors don't need many takes... especially if you've read it through with them ahead of time... on SR we did 2... sometimes 3... rarely did we ever do more than 3 takes.

MArk is very much a professional, and takes his films and charachters however small a part, very serisouly. WE both tried our best ot be as organised as possible, and not only did we finihs ahead of schedule each day, but there were a few days where we were sitting there thinking.... "Hmm were done 2 hours early.... what else can we do?" And thats when we were able to start experimenting, and trying different thigns where i, mark, Shawn (who was ACing with me on two of the four days of shooting, shawn recomended some interesting angles that made it into the final cut, Thanks buddy.) or Steven would recognise an interesting angle, lighting anomoly, subtlety in the acting etc. then we would get an extra shot just in case. sometimes we used the extra footage sometimes we didint.
But Preperation is worth EVERY SINGLE ounce of energy that you put into it. its Golden. i refuse to ever work without being fully prepared ever again.
