"EETimes is reporting that Dalsa has shipped a record-breaking 111-megapixel CCD image sensor to customer Semiconductor Technology Associates. The chip was paid for by a U.S. Navy SBIR project. At four inches across, a bit big for camera phones, but the 10560x10560 format will probably get professional digital camera users drooling."

It's too bad the public won't get to see the Sat. photos made with that sensor for a long time...but I bet they will be amazing.
Although, thinking about it, if their sensor is 4" across - is it really that amazing?
I actually worked on that satellite :) The optics can detect a campfire anywhere on one side of the earth... amazing stuff.

I am working* on the Latte section of the Red camera. It can detect a crew member in need of caffine from a range of 500 ft**.

* Actual person may not be working on camera.
** Actual camera may not be able to detect tired workers.

I don't think astronomical would even describe that chips pricepoint.

Marketing that chip to the videography community would be like Dominoes offering the World's Largest Pizza as a menu item. I think there is a point where all things become superfluous.
However, I would like to see that thing in a space photography satellite. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Imagine a 4:4:4 workflow for a sucker like that... Forget RAID and wait for holographic storage :-|

You should be optimistic. In 50 years a 111-megapixel sucker like this (smaller and better) will be embedded in your cell phone! Ok, in your ..grand son's cell phone! :D
