View Full Version : Horrorfest Promotion

J.R. Hudson

For this Fest we are going to try something a little different. We are going to allow the hype machine to come out. What does that mean ?

It mean's you can pimp and promote your film. There is a catch

Film's can only be promoted here at dvxuser inside your own unique threads. No external site(s) or link's are permitted (Unless a video or image host) Like the indiviual film discussion's, we will have the same for the Horrorfest films.

You can showcase storyboards, script segments, final score's or in progress, production still's, audition's, headshot's, behind the scene's video and making of specials, art-work and conceptual design, set dressing, location's and even One Sheet's (the Film's poster) but one thing you cannot do:

NO FOOTAGE FROM ACTUAL FILM CAN BE SHOWN UNTIL THE OFFICIAL FESTIVAL START.

Keep in mind, like all good film's, what you show can help or hurt you; giving away the plot point and secret may not be in your best interest or maybe hyping it too much may let some people down. Consider this an excercise is marketing and promotion for future project's, but

NO FILM FOOTAGE FROM THE ACTUAL FILM!

Th only Footy allowed is behind the scene's and interview type stuff. Last time said:

NO ACTUAL FOOTAGE FROM THE FILM IS ALLOWED UNTIL THE FESTIVAL PREMIERE

So can we show footage from our actual film?
:)

Only kidding. Wow, this changes things. Should be interesting no doubt.

Now I have to add "Marketing Department" to my overall budget. :)

This will certainly be an interesting exercise.

What numbskull would show footage from their entry before the contest??? Seems like you would just be shooting yourself in the foot...Did people do this in Hero-Fest????

that's where It can be confusing though. But, that does clear it up a wee bit. Stills are OK, but moving "Stills" are bad.

Noooo footage of the film.

I don't even know if I'd be brave enough to put up behind the scenes footage, which is allowed.

The results might not be what you want them to be. So many ways it could go wrong.

Good trailer, bad movie.
Bad trailer, good movie, but no one wants to watch it because they saw the bad trailer.
Bad trailer, bad movie.

If I enter, I don't know about promoting.

Speaking of which, how soon can we start promoting? When can we start the threads?

Too bad we can't get admin over our own threads. To delete posts? Because, I can see a lot of hurt feelings and arguements sprouting in individual film discussion threads coming.

People are going to get uber-defensive.

Hudson--

You might start an unorganized trend. LoL. People shouldn't start making threads until they've locked a title/name/branding. It'll become chaos.

I have a feeling this will be a really interesting addition to the fest. I have a feeling some people are gonna dig some holes and some are gonna really shine in this area. A movie can be alot better or worse based on perception.

I'm looking forward to seeing everybody's marketing campaigns!!!

Kholi
06-20-2006, 10:37 AM
I hope more people wait until they actually have a locked script before creating threads.

That way there's more discussion about the actual short being campaigned.

Brandon Rice
06-20-2006, 11:51 AM
Hey man, you know I got a script :)

Kholi
06-20-2006, 11:52 AM
Hey man, you know I got a script :)

Yeah, I know you do. And a title-- that's what I meant.

Otherwise, we're going to end up with a bunch of "untitled" threads with a lot of banter. And when people go in to read about the actual movies or comment, then they'll have to weed through all of that.

Of course, if I don't want to do that, then I don't have to. Just looking out for other people, though.

Brandon Rice
06-20-2006, 11:58 AM

Kholi
06-20-2006, 12:02 PM
You can. You can even post script segments. Just no footage or stills of the actual movies.

Edit-- Poster question was a stupid one. Got my answer.

They'll get something set in stone probaby in a week or so. It needs to be 6 minutes or under. When they post the official rules, they'll give you a submission link, and there is no entry fee. But if you would like to give me money, I have a paypal account.

Unless something's changed since Monday...

Hmm. I guess.

In that case, we should be able to do fifteen or twenty second teaser trailers. That's just the same as grabs.

Promotion might hurt a lot of entries. =P This really has become interesting.

Ben Sliker
06-21-2006, 01:00 PM
I figure I'd use it as more to document the"filmmaking process" thread, less promotion, let everyone know what's going on with your film, uh oh ... does this mean briceman can't start a "(Insert Month) Status report thread" on 12:00:01 of the first of each month?

You could post a bunch of grabs in succession and that would be a teaser clip. :) j/k

What are some examples of how promotion could hurt the entries? Maybe we could make a list of pitfalls to avoid.

Kholi
06-21-2006, 08:19 PM
A bad trailer or a bad looking still could definitely make someone go "I need to steer clear of that one."

=P Just like a bad trailer for any movie.

Even a bad poster or one sheet.

Also, giving away too much too early, you might influence someone and they'd end up running with a tad bit of your idea... possibly making it better. Not saying someone would steal, but there are alot of projects that end up being similar. It's all down to execution... but still.

I definitely don't want to be influenced by anyone's ideas. I'm going to try to steer clear of the threads unless people are allowed to post short teaser trailers.

yeah, I gotcha. I agree. You made some good points. Ya know what's weird? In these fests certain trends take place even when there's no information. It seemed like there were a lot of Fedoras in HeroFest. In SciFest there were themes of ironic robotic love ala Macgregor, Hiro, and MojoTrancer. A few entries had people killing themselves in scifest ala pastywhiteboy, and slice. I guess that's all genre dependent, but still some collective nuance carried over into them all that freaked me out.

I didn't have the pleasure of being involved with any previous fests here. Could someone point me to some info as to what prizes, if any, there are and how winners are selected? Thankee!

Ben Sliker
08-06-2006, 09:37 PM
Jarred likes to surprise us with the prizes!

They were known well before sci-fest, but for herofest, they're weren't known until after the submission deadline (well, except for part of the 1st place prize). Jarred says that these will be "big" and we should be "excited" about the 1st place prize.

As for how they are determined, whoever has 100 posts can vote for the films in different categories. Some special awards are determined by the mods.

John can you say yes or no, please.

A lot of us have read "no footy" or "footage" to mean no clips (as in no moving footage) but that grabs of actual footage were OK since footage or footy implies moving images.

So no clips of actual footage ... gotcha loud and clear.
But yes or no:
Can we post still grabs of actual content (a lot of us have been and we were allowed to do this in our threads after the contest started in the past)

THX!

That depends... if they post 24 posts in a row, each with a grab, then yes... that's considered a clip...

lol, I think that's just where the line is drawn ... could draw it at 10 seconds or 240 clips ... but its drawn at a single frames ... which I think is a good place ... still leaves a big suprise for the honeymoon.

:embarasse I need to beat this dead horse.

I have read "no clips."

I have read "no moving clips."

I have read "stills are fine."

I have read something about "screen grabs."

For clarification please, "can an image shot through the lens of my dvx while shooting a scene be posted in a thread without creating grounds for disqualification?"

(I did hire a lawyer to proper word and cover as many potential loop-holes as possible!) :)

Jack Daniel Stanley

Hudson is the word and he sad grabs are fine.
Grabs and stills are the same thing.
Whether Footage and Screen Grabs are the same thing or not, you can look at as "one frame at a time of footage is a allowable."
as per HUDSON.
