By chance if you missed my idea in the Red think Tank, Cooke has a new lense: Cooke S4/i Lenses -The Same Award-winning S4 Optics With "Intelligence."

Since Red is more of a film camera, it should be compatible with the cutting edge film lenses: Cooke's S4/i Lenses with 'inteligence' - "Continuous electronic feedback on lens setting, focus distance, aperture, depth-of-field and more."

The S4/i equipped lenses have the very same Academy Award-winning optics as the S4 lenses but also provide information electronically on lens setting, focus distance, aperture and depth-of-field.

The S4/i lenses differ from the orginal S4s in only four ways:

1. The inclusion of /i electronics
2. A tapered T stop ring
3. A hot shoe contact for use with Arricam
4. An external socket for interfacing with any professional or 35mm camera.

The lenses work on all film cameras. With Arricams and LDS cameras, information is sent through the contacts in the lens mount. With all other cameras, an external connector on the lens attaches by cable to a peripheral device the first one on the market being the /i Lens Display Box made by Cinematography Electronics. In the next few months other manufacturers, like Preston Cinema Systems, Mark Roberts Motion Control Systems, CMotion, Service Vision, Arri and others will be introducing lens control equipment and other unique equipment that takes advantage of the S4/i system.

Cutting edge RED Camera should have the cutting edge lenses with inteligence and accessory support from other manufactures.

As long as it doesn't make red even more expensive, I'm all for it! :-)

I'm curious Purple, exactly how much do you think you are going to pay for this camera by the time you are done anyway?

What do you mean by "by the time you are done anyway?", Jay?

Great idea. That should be as simple as putting an interface and some software to read the data. The problem would be if the interface was proprietary from cooke because that would mean paying big bucks for them... Stll, I'm all for the initiative! Why not make RED lenses intelligent, while we're at it?

Which brings us right back to the SLR-lens debate...

Taking advantage of this kind of lens requires exactly the kind of interfacing we discussed in that thread. It's why I suggested that Red lens mounts and adapters include a generic set of contacts and a means of getting lens data into and out of the camera; to enable exactly what they're announcing here: "With all other cameras, an external connector on the lens attaches by cable to a peripheral device..."

Good point.
