it is for real and there have been quite a few recent developments on holographic storage.. but they are a little premature for now.. maybe RED TWO.

Just came here from the Superman thread (well give or take 2 hours, having dinner and getting a beer) but for the sake of drama:

Just came here from the superman thread, where they were saying it cost more to shoot Supes on the Genesis. And that they record to tape because it's waaay too expensive to store everything on disc.

How much more expensive is it? If I am shooting a feature on the Red. Which is something I hope to achieve, maybe as a first for Australia/New Zealand... How are we all going to have the storage to keep the RAW footage, PLUS a clone of it (for keeping insurance costs down)...

has anyone started to do the math here? I am no good at maths.

remember superman was a production nightmare.. not including they spent 100 million dollars before shooting a frame on BS politics, the genises shot green lines down alot of the footage they had to manually $$remove$$..

As for storage costs.. remember a HDCAM tape costs $60 an hour.. In drive prices that buys you about a 200gb hard drive. Im pretty sure you should be able to record equivelents.
