If I am to put down two reservations for the RED One by the end of July, how likely is it I will have one in my hands? And when, do you guys think it will be shipped to me?
thank you

"Red makes no promises or representation as to the delivery date of the camera or final specifications. " We're working as hard as we can to get engineering finished by the end of this year. Other than that, we can't say any more other than your reservation gets you a place in the queue, and you can get a refund at any time for any reason.

Once again, targets are just that. No guarantees. What is guaranteed is that you can have your deposit back in full for any reason at any time.
1st 4k footage this fall. 1st camera assembly in Dec. 1st production early 2007. The cameras will be shipped in absolute order of reservations taken.
Hope that helps.

Jim,
Given your experience with cameras I am pretty sure what I am about to day is obvious, but I wanted to know that I said it.
I am VERY interested in the RED camera, and I am holding off the purchase of other cameras until RED comes out. However, I believe it's safe to say that I and other serious film makers like me, won't touch a camera that does not have a viewfinder. No matter how good your flip out monitor is, it will not hold up against a good viewfinder
A am also assuming you plan to use industry standard connections on the camera or at least connections that have been design for field use and a fair amount of abuse (I.E. there won't me a standard firewire port on the camera, but a beefed up version with some sort of locking device.. Of course I would prefer BNC ends, but you get my point).
I know you have mentioned a viewfinder, saying it would come later. As a customer I just wanted to let you know that my credit card will not say "hello" to your wonderful camera until a viewfinder can be purchased right along with it. I do not care if it is optical, I just want a good viewfinder.
As I said, given your experience with cameras, I have no doubt we are on the same page here, but I wanted to know I said it.

Jay... no problem with your point of view. We are making our camera EVF ready and plan to add our own to the lineup.

Hi Jim,
Can you be more specific about what you mean by "4K footage" in the fall, as references to 4K are open to lots of interpretation (and misinterpretation)? For example, do you mean 4K RAW files scaled to 2K or HD for viewing, or something else? Thanks.

can you disclose how many reservations you guys have of yet? I would like to get an idea where I'm at as of today if I order.

Reservations are somewhere over the 300 mark.
I doubt Jim will be any more specific of the footage to be released in the Fall.

Jim,
When you say EVF ready, does this mean you are planning to support a viewfinder from a 3rd party such as a Sony or Panasonic camera, or does this mean you will simply have your own connection which 3rd party vendors can then build a viewfinder for should they wish too.
The reason I am asking is that I know you hope to get these things moving by late this year and into production by early next year, but my instincts tell me the "package" that will be the camera we need, won't really be up and running until mid-late next year if that.
I think what we can all depend on will be a very good idea of what the camera will look like, and the quality of it's footage by late this year. I would also imagine once you lock certain elements of the camera you will begin working with 3rd party vendors in order to get additions out A.S.A.P.
I think you're doing a great job, but it seems to me that this is going to be a while yet, the camera is only the start of all this, not the end.
You once said that a tight schedule was nessesary to make sure things kept moving, I agree with that completely and I support what you are doing 100%.
I am really looking forward to see that first test still frame.

Jim has mentioned there will be numerous outputs on the camera, this includes HDMI outs, HD-SDI outs, etc. Red's EVF may attatch with a proprietary connection, but there is enough outputs so any monitoring device that uses an industry standard connection should work.

We are trying to make a standard EVF connection to allow as many options as possible.

Hopefully RED will have its own EVF solution sooner rather than later as high-end EVFs from other suppliers such as Accuscene are nearly as pricey as the RED camera body.

I think a better question would be.....Jim......When the camera goes in to full production, how many units per months are you shooting for?....if he says..'could be as little as 25 and as many as 50?....At that point, you could get a idea of how long after porduction starts with your place inline.

It is hard to say right now what the monthly production rates will be. We do have a better idea now that we have been taking reservations. We'll wait until after we show footage to see what the demand looks like and adjust production accordingly. As a customer, I would not want to put in an early reservation and have to wait several months after production begins to get my camera. That would bug me. So we don't want that to happen to any of our customers that took the leap of faith.

makes sense.. produce the reservation list as fast as possible then adjust production for demand.

It would be nice, but I like the output options red one will have, it makes expensive add-on purchases like monitors less painful as the lifespan becomes extended and you know your not locking yourself to a single product.
