It's a fishing pole holder... I did a thread on this a long time back... you can find EXACTLY the same thing as the "boom buddy" at many better fishing shops... like Bass Pro.
The RAM boom holder is actually available for fishing poles at a savings of around $40-50... of course you have to put your own pad in it then.

That very model is the one I use - I bought the Pro model for about $16 (larger diamater steel rod), but I should have bought the Lil' Pro for $10 because I'm sure my boom would have fit in that one fine. Either way, it works great in a grip head.

Arg! I just bought mine from B&H. Oh well. Still need the boom pole to go with it.
I suppose I won't find that at Fish & Hunting store, huh?

Well...um...er...you might.
There are some very nice carbon fishing poles out there. You'd just have to do a little DIY work to mount the mic. :)

Ever since that movie, "A River Runs Though It" I've wanted to learn how to fly cast.

There are a couple of threads in the Directing forum about how to hold auditions. Seems kinda silly, though, to go to all that trouble. A fly is a fly, after all.
