i swear that i'm doing something wrong but just can't see it even when i step back and start over so i'm posting here hoping someone can point out the error or my ways...

my system is a dual xeon box with a Decklink HDPro card and PremierePro1.5 and Edius Broadcast 3 as my two main NLE's. i got Edius back in March when it was about he only reasonable way to edit HVX content on a PC system. but my end goal is to have all HVX footage edited or final export on PremPro1.5 because it works with my Decklink card which lets me send HVX content out through HD-SDI ports that go to my monitors, scope, D5 deck, etc...

the process i've used before is to import content from the HVX using Edius3, place that content on the timeline and render out uncompressed AVI (either UYVY or YUY2). i then import that uncompressed AVI into PremPro1.5 and let it chew on the footage doing it's render thing and eventually i have beautiful video that i can view on my Decklinks component and HD-SDI outputs.

i recently shot some lovely footage at Half Moon Bay here in the Bay Area and wanted to cut together a nice demo piece for an upcoming tradeshow my company is attending. but when i do what i've done before my imported footage comes out looking like pixelized poop which you can see examples of by looking at my flickr account:

i've tried to label the files as clearly as possible but look at any diagonal edge in the Edius version and then look at the same diagonal edge in the Premiere version. there is noticable aritfiacting going on here. i have also edited the Edius stills in Photoshop to strech them from 960x720 to 1280x720. the Photoshop altered stills look awesome and what I would expect the footage to look like in Premiere but that is not the case.

i suspect that this is happening because the HVX records with a native pix ratio of 1.333 instead of square pixels. I can see this looking at the bin of file in Edius and the aspect ratio showing 960x720 resolution. However Premiere with my Decklink card only has settings for 1280x720 resolution.

i'm trying to figure out how to make Edius do a better job of converting 960x720 content to 1280x720. or maybe the problem is with Premiere. either way I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this.

to answer my own question if you want to export to 1280x720 res or 1920x1080 you must start a project with those settings. it's kind of misleading ot choose the HDV presets for HVX footage but that is what you must do to export native 720 and 1080 resolutions.

i laid off my clips in the HDV 720 mode and they imported to PremierePro with no problems, no need to render, no jaggies other problems.

Yup, yup, project settings determine processing resolution. They do not determine compression, although it seems like they do.
