Horror is my favorite Genre... so its gonna be the biggest promoted, and probally have the biggest prizes ever. People will have 4 months this time, contest will end Haloween.

Herofest was great because it was the first time I didnt announce prizes. It made me see who really loves making movies. Wish i could give you all a HVX just for entering.

Now THAT one will blow the gates out, I'm sure. It's such an open genre, and horror is always such an easy seller. Any ideas in advance, however, about the time limits, etc?

BTW, I'm really ticked at you right now Jarred, and I know that'll cause you to lose a little sleep (or not) ... but I'd PROMISED my wife I'd sit the next festival out. That, and I've kind of milked the GOOD people on my crew for the past couple of films to work for free ... so the next project is/was going to be bigger, and probably shoot in October with funding.

Now what am I to do?!

Is that a fact ? You ever seen a 6 year old watch Jurassic PArk in full sorround sound large screen glory ? I'd beg to differ; it's definately a horror film !

That's what I thought . it just so happened to be on the other day and I was like this is kind creepy

Question: What will be the time length of these? I got to thinking, if you're going to keep a 5 minute cap on the films, that doesn't really give you enough time to establish characters, scare your audience AND resolve the situation. I'm sure we can think outside of the box here, but it's gonna be rough.

lets wait for herofest to be done before we start laying down the rules for horrorfest.

if you need 10 minutes just shoot for 10 minutes and speed everything up 2x in post.

That would have worked perfect for HeroFest....SuperSpeed!!

Five minutes is enough time. Six is even better.

If you want to do any more than that, make a longer one and cut six out of it. Just like we said last/this fest.

I'm really glad this is gonna be a Horror fest because..ive got a few basic ideas running around..and I was waiting for this forum to get the ball rolling for the next contest so i could go rent a DVX and film.

Anybody in New Jersey or New York wanna team up? if the rules let it that is....

so, horror fest sounds like a fantastic idea! we'll have to try and rearrange our schedule a little to try and make it in this time around.
we had our hero short fully wrapped, but in post our doubts were confirmed that the story had become to big. we could not get a version we were happy with to squeeze down to five/six minutes that we felt lived up to our concept and didn't compromise the story. we are working on the full cut now and it looks like it will be about 25minutes long. our own fault. it seems that it is impossible for us to do a five minute story. we love this project and we are happy that once again dvxuser motivated us to move forward with our ideas...
well, we will give it another go for horror fest then!
Congrats to everyone on completing their shorts....we enjoyed watching all of them!:)

Lets have a 7 minute time limit for HorrorFest. A whole extra minute will rock for story development! I am excited to see the results of Herofest tonight. Good job everyone!

no to the 7 minutes.

that would KILL the bandwidth... just do a strict 5 minutes, J-man.. that's my opinion.

yeah not only the bandwidth.. but 7 minute films x 50 is a hella lot of time to be watching films.

Looking at fifty films, every minute you add requires almost another full hour to watch them. And that's not counting the time it takes to respond and actually think about them.

Brandon Rice
06-14-2006, 02:33 PM
Then, I'll stick to 5 maybe :)

I liked the 6 min of Herofest. Hopefully, it will be like that for Horrorfest. I felt the stories were deeper than they would have been with 5min. :)

Its all about how much you try to do... if its too much it'll feel rushed... if its not enough it'll make the audience feel ripped off.

I like the 6 min.
1min set up
1 min resolution
4 min middle act

Zombie fest required nothing in terms of creating the world. All of the mythology is part of everyone's pop lexicon and we knew all the variations ... you can get it from a chemical spill, from being bitten by someone that already is a zombie, they usually move slow, and are hard but not impossible to kill.

With scifi - a genre based on creating the entire world from scratch, a little more set up was required, and unless your hero was very traditional, the same could be said of hero fest to a lesser extent.

Horror is a completey open genre and may or may not require much set up (slasher - no, invasion of the body snatcher - maybe). But I like the six because I feel it lets you do 30% more while making the films feel 60% less rushed.

wise words from the consumate professional.

the wisest words would be write an approriate story for the time length ... but I like the six ... even though if I do horror fest, it's gonna be a much simpler story.

i think one of, if not the best, example on the forum of a perfectly structured / scaled story for these mini films was Texas Fortune.

Simple conflict with a good punchline / reversal at the end.
