What I do is delete the ".txt" portion of the name, leaving it ".mp4" It works fine then.

yeah you gotta play them as .mp4 and in quicktime and they should work.

How many days to vote Jarred?

Blaine
06-07-2006, 10:48 AM
Jarred,

I have a question regarding the voting. SFX is in a "blue" column. This would seem to tell me, as it did on SciFest that you can rate them for SFX but it isn't required. In the score tally, however, the total score is divided by 7, therefore including SFX. I'd hate to have to give a movie a high SFX score if it doesn't deserve it just to make sure it finishes where it belongs overall. All the other categories are essential, I'm just concerned about the SFX being counted on all movies, and not optional. Perhaps average it in where it's used but not where it does not apply.

Just wondering.

Jarred Land
06-07-2006, 10:55 AM
All columns count, the blue col isnt to be ignored, its blue this time as its one of the more important columns as you probaly have seen from the films.

Sorry for the confusion.

Jarred,

Doesn't counting VFX this time around put non VFX centric films at a disadvantage? There was no requirement for VFX in the contest rules. The way VFX was handled during Sci-Fest, IMO, worked pretty well i.e., bumping Cinematography or Lighting to reward VFX.

WilderWorks

Or we expand VFX to include everything visual that had to be artificially constructed, including costuming, props, etc. That is, old-fashioned practical effects.

CineMark

I completely agree. This is a filmmaking contest not a visual effects challenge. This site is geared towards telling stories using a dvx. How does making VFX an important and neccesary category make sense. If this were CGtalk.com I would completely understand. Why not have a column for best fight scene and penalize anyone who didn't have one (just making a point). Jarred, so how do you propose people vote on the films that have limited or no VFX? Give them a 1 or a 2? That doesn't seem rational or fair. I liked Jack's idea in a previous thread that you take the average of the other columns and place it into that column.

I definitely agree. Some films were very good but will have lowered scores based on the SFX vote, simply because they were not fx based. I think this should be as the last competition and SFX should be weighed seperately.

Thanks so much. I appreciate you bending on this issue. Now all the films who don't have VFX or a very limited amount will be able to compete with those that do. Cause in the end it's all about the story and how well it is told.

How does the overall rating column work?

- other columns added together (editing should be included for this)
- rating of 1-10
- rating of films 1-25 (first to last)

So the overall rating column is supposed to being calculated automatically from the other columns. Hmmm, that seems odd that there would be no editing column involved then.

And if you stretch the deadline you have to answer every thread that asks "What mic/tripod should I get?". "What is the clunk?" and "Help me put together a light kit".

5th place: DahopaFilms

best cinematography : Anthem- Nielsen
best edit : TBA
best score: JimmyJib

...
Wow! I know that had to be close. It really is an honor even to be mentioned with those films.
Congratulations to everyone one that entered and put themselves out there.

I want to make sure people know how much help I had and that the credit is shared (although I am keeping the crane :) )

There were no less than 12 DVXusers who collaborated in some official capacity or donated goods or services to Bone Hand (that # has to be a record right?). There are many more that warrant thanks ... but here in the forum I'll just hank the people you know and let you know some of the ways they contributed to the film.

so ... thank you and congrats to ...

MSMANHATTAN
Produced two of the top five (RfEyeD and Bone Hand) Her enthusiasm and resourcefulness really brought the piece together and she was responsible for finding the a great kid after I was dumb enough to write a script centered around one.
ARAM BAUMAN
in addition to pulling a top 5 film out of his arse with killer VFX at the last minute, Aram saved our asses by figuring out how to light the roof scene without electrocuting everyone when we lost the light (all of it) on our first day of shooting and then it rained covering the roof in 2 inches of water. We just would have lost that day if he hadn't figured out a brilliant plan of shooting light out of the stairwell and bouncing onto a series of sun reflectors. Also he's largely responsible for the look of Bone Hand's apartment interior. It was one of those very collaborative Head Gaffer and DP collaborations where I described the look of the scene and a few specific effects and then he just went to town lighting it on his own an adding shape and dept. He did way better than I could have done on my own.
TIMUR CIVAN
Shot most of the movie and was there every single shoot for every second that I was. Timur shot the opening rain sequence for example. At the end of that shoot he looked like he had jumped into a swimming pool fully clothed. Timur was tireless and constantly found new ways to contribute and improve what we were doing and was absolutely fantastic to be around 110% of the time. He's talented, tireless, and a good egg. In my previous two films (all shot by me) the camera was much lighter and flew around a lot, but Timur was able to operate in a way that added weight and felt more cinematic.
HERMAN WITKAM
of course provided music that totally helped tell the story and totally rocked. Herman was great to work with. We did three drafts of the score, and I think each had 10 or more pages of notes for him, but he just turned them around and came back implementing everything awesomely. I'm a tough date in the score department and Herman never blinked and I never detected any frustration in our communication. He just took the notes and did the work and got everything back on time.
TEXTURE
did the Audio Sweetening and it made a huge difference. He really knew what he was doing and where I would have just turned the volume up and down on different tracks he skillfully notched out frequencies in the ambient beds / etc. that conflicted with the human voice and was just able to clean up a lot of the location sound. I think he is working with Dahopa on the DVD version of his flick, and he will probably be inundated after this but hit him up for your project - he loves story and filmmaking.
TC
did a great job with the title design and animation. I kept getting the note on other things that my titles were lacking and I had a lot on my plat with this one so I hit him up because I knew he would deliver, and he did. Also he allowed me to use a clip from his Zombie Fest entry THE LIVING'S END (the axe to the head when the little girl's watching TV) thanks man!!!
FLINT MI
Allowed us to shoot on his roof and was just a great gut to have around on set and toss ideas around in the editing room, he also shot some BTS.
ALEX DEPEW
Shot a ton of BTS and was also great to have around especially on the roof shoot.
REZFACTOR (the member formerly known as "N... (something) ... Shooter"
Allowed us to use an awesome and gory clip from his Zombie Fest entry INFECTION
(the guy getting shot in the head on the TV). Thank you sir.
COFFEE
Lent us his Letus35 to use along side mine. Thanks man!

and last but by no means least,
JOHN HUDSON
hooked us up with all of the Bone Hand sunglasses FOR FREE through his wife Flora's
Designer sunglass company Somatic
http://somaticoptics.com/
Thanks John. And thanks for all your input and support from wayback and up through this contest.

BRICEMAN, ENVISION, and ISAAC BRODY didn't work on this film, but help keep me sane on a moment to moment basis (yes, believe it or not this is me relatively sane). Thanks guys.

And of course thanks to JARRED for giving these films a home, allolwing inspiration and knowledge to flourish like a mutant virus in zombie film, and for giving me a hard time (you bastid) :)

What happened to the download links? I'd like to match the winning names with the winning films. It seems that navigating this contest is unnecessarily difficult. Why not keep the download links available for latecomers to the contest, posted in an easily accessible place? Or, if doing that causes bandwidth problems, at least telling us the names of the winning films?

Sorry to rant, but I don't understand why this contest is buried so deeply on dvxuser.com. A banner house ad linking to the films or, at the very least, to the contest results would seem to be much more user-friendly.

I agree with Xrayspecs 100%. If you're not a regular here on the boards you would never know a contest was going on and had to vote! Maybe next go around the mods should do a better job of getting the word out there! I'm almost definite there's still people on this board who doesn't even know the contest has ended... and probably some who didn't now there was a contest... Luckilly I did a few roaming around and was able to vote on time, but next time there's a contest like this I say ambush the whole site with info regarding what ever contest is going on.

Just a thought, since the cafe gets more traffic than anything else maybe a sticky should be put there regarding voting and such... I know, I know what some of you are saying, oh there's a special "HereFest" thread, but honestly I bet some people don't even look at this thread unless their involve or know somebody who is involve. I know you need 100 post to vote, but maybe that guy with 80 is able to vote by the time polls close, so to sum it up, next time better promoting to get the word out there, hope I don't get banned for this :banned:

:) a few things to remember ....

Jarred is basically putting this little shindig on by his lonesome at this point as our beloved Barry_S has had a variety of personal and professional commitments that have demanded his time.

Also the fest is ever exploding in terms of viewership with each one out doing the last even in this last case with so few entries.

Just imagine managing all that, doing all the actual programming and design for the forum, serving as a moderator, hunting down sponsorship and prizes, etc. So its a miracle the thing even goes up.

Jarred is a brilliant motivator and conceptualizer and he dreamed this place into existence from thin air, but yeah OK, maybe he's not always the best linear organizer ... or maybe he is and there's just to much to do.

Just something to think about before ranting. It's not McDonald's here and there's no highly trained staff of prep cooks that can get your burger your way every time in five minutes or less. It's just one Dood with the help of some other mods to keep things from getting out of hand.

Hopefully Barry_S will be back next go around, even if he is I think as the fest continues to grow etc., it might be too big for even Barry and Jarred together, so I'm hoping in any eventuality that some other mod out there will want to join in and cohost with either Jarred or Jarred and Barry.

I think that this fest was the easiest to view the films actually with mirror sites linked from each thread -- perfect!

The small step backwards was in getting the info disbursed. Maybe its as simple as having a Mega Thread that has the first post updated continuously as a Splash Page and then just "fest update" posted in the thread with a link back to the splash page ... who knows though, maybe that's problematic, or just didn't get done because it was at the end of a long list with 99 other things that were that simple and DID get done which we took for granted ... but in either case .. this is getting off topic for this thread, so let's not discuss it here. If you want to discuss improvements and concerns then lets start a suggestion box thread (even though I just snuck mine in):)

Bottom line is ...
participating and viewing are privileges,
it's a lot of work for one guy,
I think we will inevitably see the fest become more and more efficient and easier to navigate,
it's going to be a process that continues to evolve over the next few fests, so try to be patient. Also you can always start a "how do i" or "where do I find" "or what's the deadline for" thread and someone will jump in to help you.
My 2 .

most of which have the films linked to a mirror site (not sure if the links are up still but who knows - the contest has to end sometime though)

I understand everyones comments.. Herofest was a test in design this time around like I mentioned before.. it was the tight community festival, as you guys could tell, for the people here that really just want to make movies. There were no prizes announced, and the support was from your peers. But its not like i "hid" it.. i sent out 2 mass emails to the members leading them to herofest, and we chewed through most of our available viewing bandwidth daily.. and i had a ton of votes come in.

But dont worry.. that experiment was done.. Horrorfest will be pimped big time.. Prizes will be announced beforehand, and everyone on the planet will know about it.

And thanks to Larry R. for reposting his mirror link to all the films.

And Jarred, I completely understand how difficult it must be to program an online film festival, especially if you're a programmer of one with a million other site maintenance details to handle. I'm looking forward to the next contest (sounds like you're already planning to deal with the stuff I whined about in my previous post), and I hope to enter my own short film. Even if there's not a prize for score, there's no reason not to list a placement. It would seem like a slap in the face to the composers that worked so hard on this.

If it's a real time consuming chore, then I'll gladly take the time & tally up all the votes for each film to list what placed highest in lighting, camera, score, etc.

Since this fest was CLEARLY not about the prizes, as none were never announced, I think it's safe to say that the rankings for everything is important to about 90% or more of the folks that entered, while others sat this one out.

Congrats to all and yes scores should be mentioned, for all the reasons above. These composers burn the midnight oil just as much as any other participant and should be recognized.

John Williams was guest director for the New York Philharmonic a couple of months ago. Martin Scorcese and Steven Speilberg introduced some films one of which was played with only sound effects and dialogue and then replayed to with the Philharmonic playing along. The point was to illustrate how the music carried the scene.

Some of the greatest 'actors' in a couple of these productions, were the composers...

Hope they'll get a mention.

Also, are the links gone? That's it until the DVD?

Oh, and THANK YOU JDS for letting me participate in your production!!!
